Earning money as a self-employed individual or sole trader requires a clear understanding of your rates and financial situation. Knowing how much you're earning per hour is essential, considering the hard work you put in daily and over the year.
Taking the time to assess your finances can significantly impact your business's success. By analyzing your earnings, you can identify areas for improvement and increase your income.
Though it might be a sensitive topic, approaching it seriously and objectively-sitting down with a pen and paper to do the calculations-can provide valuable insights for making informed decisions and ensuring your business thrives.

I’m in PnD 20yrs, self employed 5yrs. My wife does the books and sets my day rate. I used to think I wasn’t worth more than £100 a day. Thanks to her I’m now on £180 a day. I’m booked up on average at least 6mths in advance. We do open estimates Not quotes. All materials are on top. Most of my clients (80%) ask me back again and again. My self esteem and confidence is much better. The quality of my work is much higher. I interview potential clients just as much as they do me, and yes I turn down work if I don’t like the clients. PLEASE EVERY TRADES PERSON HAVE RESPECT FOR YOURSELF, YOUR WORK. IF WE ALL DO THAT WE CAN PUT THE PRISE UP TO £200!!!
@ProfessionalPainterDecorator
thanks for commenting Jason. You need now to move away from estimates and the day rate... QUOTE for the job done.. not the time taken. Give a WHOLE price for the job... materials and labour altogether. You need to be making money on materials as well as on the job. If you went to see a job and you think it's about 10 days work.. you'd be on your estimate £1800 + materials? If I said you quote he same job with M&L at £2300 and you then finished after 8 days as you work slick and efficiently... the customer has accepted the £2300 and that's the price for the job they pay. With your estimate of £1800 and saying it's going to take ten days... by law you have estimated so would then charge only 8 days. Or.. if you took longer you can also charge more. It works both ways on estimates... but how do you think a customer would react to you saying you want 5 days more pay??? Have a think ;)

This is probably the best video for sole traders on RU-vid. Our skills, experience and time are worth paying for and we rob ourselves when we dont charge enough. I've done many a job resenting it as i worked because i didnt price it properly. On the other hand, when you price correctly, you can concentrate on doing the job rather than worrying about working for a pittance.

I’ve been saying this for years and as an ex painter & decorator you’re 100% correct, the average cost of materials equates to around 10-20% of the overall price of the job.. Now I’m on the other side of the business and have worked for both Dulux & Crown and the amount of fellow painters moan about the price of materials given that the investment that goes into manufacturing of materials is going up and up with raw materials etc. yet everyone wants to buy the cheapest materials available… If the products you buy take more than 2 coats this effects the profit on Labour charges and time spent as you spend more time putting another coat on. It’s the old saying “you get what you pay for” - yes there are cheaper products from the likes of the sheds etc. but AGAIN if you have to put additional coats on it cost the applier more money in time and time is money.
@ProfessionalPainterDecorator
If you allow for those extra coats in the cost of the job.. I can't see it's an issue if the spec says what you are doing. Where the issue comes is with the customer who only wants a cheap price...........and they aren't comparing like4like on a quote .......... thankfully I don't work for those types of customer.

Great video. The way I look at it is if you are a “professional” and are running your business “effectively” with “specialised equipment” “insurances” “administration” etc then charging 250 - 300 a day isn’t ridiculous. If your are providing the “professional services” including all the administrative parts and are rated highly for those services continuously then then customer will not quibble. Focus on the effective running of your business and give yourself enough breathing space to do so and you should be able to earn those higher rates no problem. All customers/clients want is a professional services start to finish and aftercare. Simples. Thanks Phil…. Good Post!

The only thing I’d have to add is…. Depending on what part of the country you’re in depends a hell of a lot on what you can charge , and also , your clientele . Probably 80percent of mine are retired working class people , so therefore , as much as I want to put my prices up , I’ve got to be very careful, because there’s always some fireman that does is part time job and undercuts you. Sadly , customers sometimes want the cheapest price , not the bestest job!!!. Great vid btw👍👍
@ProfessionalPainterDecorator
@ProfessionalPainterDecorator 2 года назад
And this is what I'm getting at. Have you looked at what you actually earn per hour .. taking into account all the costs you need to run you business? Forget competing against the fireman the gardener the cash in hand painter, you shouldn't be reducing your price to be working for the people they will be working for. Unless you are happy running at loss to keep those customers happy?

False accounting for sure. It’s like you’re convincing yourself you’re making more money than you are, then wonder why you’re skint. Working for “yourself” is great, but you have to deal with a new boss every week, and you don’t switch off. I do owe a debt of gratitude to RU-vid creators and educators when I moved to the middle of nowhere with no employment opportunities, so Bravo lla. *edit. Why no has mentioned you’re the Ricky Garvais of P&D is baffling to me. @@ProfessionalPainterDecorator
@ProfessionalPainterDecorator
Ricky who? Yes, its; all basic maths, what goes in.. and goes out and whats left is yours after the tax man's been at it. It is the question of how anyone thinks £120 a day is good (£15ph on 8hrs) when you need to take of running cost. Also the hours/days you work come into it. No good saying working a 5hrs day suits.. well it does..but unless you're charging the extra money to cover your 'no working hours' you're missing out on extra earnings. Work hard, play hard and and work smarter not harder. There should be no need to be working all hours

Phill, so true, however my figures are about £12.50 for min wage, with holidays and pension at 3% and employers NI. Then, correctly you’ve op’s costs. For me, £142 is about BEP and it’s been a few years since I’ve worked for less than that, however you forget to include the Utility from job satisfaction, which is almost immeasurable. I’ve career changed, used to earn a good wage with perks, and please don’t get me wrong, struggled to start of with. I’m now, fortuitous enough to have developed a good customer base and reputation, so now I’m in a position to price make, rather than price take. I’m putting myself through qualifications, as you’ve stated, it affords credibility and you command a bit more! Not winning every job but finally striking the work life balance. Booked up to next year, with a mix. It’s not always about price, but it’s not a race to the bottom and you’ve got to cover costs and enjoy life too and you’ll be surprised how many people out there are prepared to pay for quality. Keep the aspidistra flying!

Another food and very interesting video and a good guide , the amount of tradesmen out there chasing there tails with loads of work on and not realising they aren’t making money is incredible and to be fair at certain times we have all been there, one of the problems is being led by what we perceive as the going rate in the area ie Bill Smith round the corner is charging £15 ph so I have to charge the same to be competitive this is how we get onto the race to the bottom when what we should be doing is working out our rates as you have stated and joining the race to the top and earning what we deserve and warrant. One of the most important things is to target the customers who are prepared to pay the right price for the right job and weed out the chancers who don’t.

Morning.. thanks. A 'normal' room... Just look at it and think... How long to prep the room How long will one coat for the ceiling take. How long will the walls take.. What will I get done in a day for the woodwork. Add your times/hours up like that. That's your starting point.

Hi Phil.......Can I ask you a question Why is your old chap still working ? Is it for the money ? Or going to work gives him something to get up for, keeps him fit and happy? If you charge £120 per day and its keeping you fit and happy surely that's the main thing in life.
@ProfessionalPainterDecorator
@ProfessionalPainterDecorator 2 года назад
He loves work. Brian who works for us since starting at the age of 15 in 1966.. is 71 now. still does 36hrs a week! £120 a day is fine.. but it's not fine if you are only seeing £80 a day after taking running costs off... (which also takes into account all the days you won't earn). Remember.. 223 days to work.... and only 1784 hrs to earn your money.
@geoffreymeare3406
@geoffreymeare3406 2 года назад
Your Dad loves his work ..........that's the point I'm making ......its not all about the money and what you should be making. If you paint a room at say 3 days × 180 + paint( 80 ) =600 for 1 room.Thats a big sum of money for most people to pay. Being more realistic in what you charge works well with me. eg. External job 7 days at 120 +230 paint =1070.I work extra hours each day (the (weather's nice and I'm getting a tan 😀) I complete in 5 days , customer's happy he knows the price is good,gives me an extra £50. I' ve ordered paint at the cheapest I could find online but charge say B & Q price (profit 50 ) £940 profit for my weeks work I'm happy,customer's delighted. Next door neighbour see's me as happy chap working hard so I book him in at a later date.Does'nt ask for a price even. I tell him I will contact him around 6 weeks when we get another spell of good weather. Need to keep the tan topped up😀😉

Don’t forget VAT That will kill it
@ProfessionalPainterDecorator
@ProfessionalPainterDecorator 2 года назад
oh I didn't even want to mention that.. but as a sole trader/one man band, I doubt many will see a £85K+ turn over unless they start employing someone. But again... VAT won't effect your 'wage' or what you want to earn, or your running costs.. as you'll be adding it to your customers quote/bill. Being VAT registered does have it's perks. But lets face it, if you are putting VAT on you bill, Mr and Mrs Looking For teh Cheapest prices, won't be having you over the gardener who'll be cash in hand. On the plus side, bigger jobs with companies, they won't worry about the VAT as they'll claim it back anyway. So being VAT registered can help you get those types of jobs.
@davidsmalley8783
@davidsmalley8783 2 года назад
You seem to do predominantly private work which is fair enough I stick to new / commercial which is not effected by VAT On the odd occasion I do a private job or quote for one vat kills it hence me not chasing it £48 an hour inc vat is a hell of a lot for joe blogs to pay plus materials with mark up etc etc Not enough wealthy clients in my area
@ProfessionalPainterDecorator
@ProfessionalPainterDecorator 2 года назад
@@davidsmalley8783 running costs still effect you. Work out those, and work out what hours you work.... What are you coming a way with an hour. No matter where you live, who you work for the principal is still the same.

Phil can you do a video on 2k paints??? I have looked into the safety of using 2k online and spoken to quite a few people about it and it seems to be that only air fed mask can protect you from breathing in isocyantes contained within 2k product. I see people on FB spraying this stuff all the time with regular mask and even without masks. Im not even sure if its actually legal to use outside of a spray booth yet hundreds of small companies are using it on kitchens and upvc. Young lads being trained up to spray with it and probably no idea on health risk? I know its used for fast drying times and extra durabillity but can we use it safely? Seems a bit of a grey area to me and the people spraying the stuff either dont care or dont know and also dont really want to talk about it due to the legallities.......
@ProfessionalPainterDecorator
@ProfessionalPainterDecorator 2 года назад
I wouldn't spray it in a house. It's geared for industrial use with proper air or water filter spray booths. For the general decorator there's no need to use it. You're correct about masks! Once again.. FB with the blind leading the blind.
