what roller should I use when painting my walls and ceilings?

Choosing the right roller for painting your house can greatly affect the quality and efficiency of the job. While personal preferences may vary, here are some general guidelines to help you make an informed decision:
Nap Length: The nap length refers to the thickness of the roller cover. For most interior walls, a 3/8-inch nap is commonly used. It works well with most paint types and provides a good balance between coverage and smooth finish. For textured surfaces or exterior walls, you might consider using a longer nap, such as 1/2-inch or 3/4-inch, to reach into crevices and cover uneven areas.
Material: Roller covers are available in various materials, including synthetic fibers like polyester and nylon, and natural fibers like lambswool. Synthetic covers are more commonly used as they tend to be durable, easy to clean, and suitable for most paint types. Natural fiber covers, like lambswool, are preferred for certain specialized applications or specific paint types. However, they require more care during cleaning and can shed fibers.
Quality: Investing in a high-quality roller cover can make a noticeable difference in the application process and final results. Higher-quality covers tend to hold more paint, provide better coverage, and leave a smoother finish. Look for roller covers with reinforced cores and beveled edges, as these features enhance durability and help prevent paint lines and streaks.
Roller Frame: When choosing a roller frame, ensure it's compatible with the roller cover size you've selected. Roller frames typically come in various lengths, allowing you to attach different-sized covers. Consider frames with comfortable handles and sturdy construction for ease of use and durability.
It's important to note that different paint types may require specific roller types or additional considerations. For example, high-gloss paints may benefit from using a foam roller to minimize the appearance of brush marks.
Ultimately, your personal preference and the specific requirements of your painting project will influence your choice of roller. It can be helpful to visit a reputable paint store or consult with a painting professional to discuss your specific needs and get recommendations based on your project's scope.

Great vid again. Useful info, thanks. Great explanation for loading rollers vs wetting out

Also most decorators I know use the medium pile microfibre like a “jack of all trades” whether on smooth walls or semi smooth they really don’t bother with the fine or short pile as the finish is not little or no better.
@scottlstone
@scottlstone 2 дня назад
The reason some trade decorators use a 4 inch to roll their paint from brushes is because they use the wider double arm roller frames that won’t enable them to get that close to the edge of the wall

Personally I prefer the Hamilton (green) sleeves , I wish they would do a 6inch one, I always dampen them before use too . I've tried different ones but always go back to hamilton, 😊
@TheWESTSIDE1967

if you dampen make sure it's spun out dry as you will get an aero / air bubbles finish on walls or ceilings otherwise

I like the purdy frame as it really grips the sleeve... and being really lazy the quick fit/ release on the extension pole is a bonus too...

39 yrs Exp,That's my set up, not found the perfect roller tbh as the Purdy 12 inch roller as with many can roll flat so it looks like an empty toilet roll & won't hold much paint the trick is to roll back as it's when the paint is tacky that it pulls the roller fibres back out & when you reload it will hold much more paint, the frames are good & lightweight but there so many nooks and crannies & a nightmare to clean up, need to start wrapping in cling film as mine need dipping in Nitromoors

Cheers Phil! I'm an amateur diy and had loads of odds and ends of stuff so I thought I'd treat myself to a load of purdy gear after some research. Tried the colossus long pile sleeve for the first time and did struggle but I do think I could get used to it. I also struggle with paint consistency and can never get the paint to behave how it does for you pros. I slways flatten my rollers and can get hardly no coverage. Thanks for this vid! 👍🏻

I never have time on a job to take the extra steps in would take to go and soak my roller nap, and nobody does that here. But I'm doing commercial work where there isn't always a sink available. I just do what you do. I put it in the paint.

love you and your vids. Really appreciate the time, effort and enthusiam you put into them. On topic - I used to, many years ago, swear by the old Purdy white dove and other short pile sleeves. About 15 years ago I switched to long pile woven sleeves and never looked back. I tend to do high end interiors. I found if i loosen the latex a bit, and roll out well, I can get equally good finishes but save huge amounts of time on loading up. I tried a few different micro fibres...not for me thanks. And I'm sorry to say i 4in whilst cutting in. I went up against a few painter and decorator friends of mine who just strike and roll and I wasn't any slower for it. I will say, however, that as soon as a customer put a lamp in a corner i think it's visible if you haven't rolled out the brush marks... maybe I'm overly fussy 😁

I don't think people roll in close enough... now the sheep are all wanting to use 18" roller frames they can't get in close enough. Have you tried the Rota Gold's yet?
@Johnnygstring
@Johnnygstring Месяц назад
If you roll into your cutting in then you only need to cut a brush width. Despite your take on new build and contract work, these days the demand for a higher standard is there. Gone are the days of slipping paint on walls. 75% of what I do is new build and they run around with thier nose to the wall. The domestic work is far more forgiving as most people couldn't tell a quality paint job from a shit one. Been pushing a brush for a long long time. @@ProfessionalPainterDecorator

Using both the rota at the moment. The one thing you didn’t mention is how quickly you can wash the gold. It’s the easiest to clean sleeve I’ve ever used. Fossa do a nice sleeve called the white star. I use it on lids and it’s brilliant. Purdy frames all the way for me.

I have tried quite a few over the years and now I only use Purdy White Dove. They come in 4,6,9,12,18 Inch, and a variety of nap lengths. I get a great finish with them. I never wash my rollers out after use. Keep them wet in a plastic bag. I only wash then if the next job is a different colour just prior to using them, so they never dry out.

@ProfessionalPainterDecorator
@ProfessionalPainterDecorator Месяц назад
Toupret do a putty, but check re coat times for drying. In this heat, it'll dry quick. They also do a Toupret wood filler in powder form you mix up. That's quick and easy to apply to cracks in putty and I also have used it to replace old putties. I'll worry about trying to remove it when the time comes lol You could run some interior/exterior caulk in them if not too big Or use TimbaBuild or Repair Care putty system. But it's not cheap and can be messy

The Hamilton green sleeve I've not used for a while now... Moved on. They're ok when 'new' but life span isn't great, also don't hold a lot of paint.

Rota Gold Medium pile, I've been using a Rota Gold Long pile this week on a smooth ceiling, using Isomat Ceiling paint, Premium colour and also Johnstones Durable matt. All been fine, it gets plenty on and dries off well. Just make sure your paints not too thick that it dries too fast on you.

@ProfessionalPainterDecorator
Yes. Start doing filling after your first primer coat has dried.
@geoffreymeare3406
@geoffreymeare3406 Год назад
Toupret wood filler is the best I've found (east to apply and sand ) Get yourself a proper filling knife,far better than a scraping knife (far too stiff ) All fillers will shrink a little when drying so using a second fill is always best.
