Hi there, Liron here!
Many seem to be obsessed with "what color to use".
In fact, I see many who are crippled by these types of decisions, whether before they begin their painting, or DURING the painting process.
This is completely counter-productive.
The goal of this video is to put color in a USEFUL CONTEXT, thus removing a lot of the worry people face.
To demonstrate this, I’ll paint the classic David sculpture using an extremely random assortment of colors, as well as the previous colors on my dirty palette's mixing areas.
To be fully honest, I DID develop a decently good intuition as to what colors work and how, and I am following very basic principles of composition, but I am using very random colors for most of this demo.
I hope you find it helpful! 😊🙏🏼

This works in part because all of the colirs used her3 are pretty desaturated. More saturated colors could clash easier; desaturated colors are easier to harmonize. There is a lesson about that on the Marco Bucci channel. The theory that colors are not important and what's important is value has some merits, but such "muddy" colors are a specific case anyway.

this is what artists need man. A dose of chill tf out anyone who talks about color harmonies like its a cult and there are holy combinations that you must adhere to need to relax. In reality, there are so many possible color harmonies it's hard not to fall into one. I glean the biggest aspect of color theory is really about balance, and mostly of saturation. Saturation demands attention, so it's more "expensive." And then it gets worse when you have different saturated colors. Colors don't clash, their saturations do. Your colors are balanced really well! That's why it works. It's mostly desaturated, but there are saturated colors. You also talked about balancing cold and hot colors, which was done well. Also, red-yellow-blue is like one of the most common color harmonies. (commonness isn't a bad thing) It's common because it's very pleasing!

Thank you so much for this. I am completely colourblind and have never had the ability to see any colour before, only black, white and shades of grey. I usually paint in colour anyways and just let whatever happens happen but recently I have been stuck in a rut fearing to use colour from hearing everyone constantly talk about colours one should *never* use together etc and as it is something I quite literally cannot comprehend no matter what I do it overwhelms me to the point of not being able to paint for fear of clashing colours and ruining a piece. This video was refreshing and you are a magnificent artist - what a beautiful piece!

Great insight and advice and tutorial. Definitely helps to ease some anxieties to approaching and focusing on staying creative. I've been learning how to use gouache for a few months now and while there are resources for gouache here and other places, I find that there is also quite a bit to learn from artists such as yourself! Thank you for sharing your approach and insight. I've been painting in a bristol vellum sketchbook and a cold press pad. So far they're fine, albeit I just purchased a hot press pad and look forward to learning it's advantages and limitations. Thank you for your mind and direction! It's always worth hearing what you have to say, even for a misfit gouache artist. Cheers!

This is so helpful! I have a pad of arches hot pressed paper and I never liked it. But I also don’t want to waste expensive paper, so I just put it aside, hoping someday I can figure out how to use it other than making some cards. And then here comes Liron, with this wonderful tutorial showing me how to use hot pressed paper to achieve the desired effects. I enjoyed every minute of the video and absolutely loved the final result! Thank you!! 😄 P.S. I’m never obsessed with matching colors or getting the same colors as the teacher is using (phew!) But I can still remember how shocked I was when watching a video by Stan Miller, where he was using some really “crazy” colors to create beautiful portraits. That was really eye-opening to me. My problem with colors is that I can never get enough of them...I was trying to do a “No-Buy 2022” but I couldn’t make it through half a year 😂

Saunders Waterford makes more affordable paper than Arches, Winsor & Newton too, also Carson. Fabriano makes HP paper that has 50% cotton in it, that’s more affordable than 100% Cotton. Well, what's also interesting is that the subject matter is monochrome, which alleviates the brain having to navigate around colors as they would exist in another choice, be it a still Ife or landscape. Many artists throughout history have worked in sepia and other monochromatic palettes. One of the 'hazards' of painting today is that art supply industries push - and have available - an obscene number of colors. The more experience one has, the more willing one will find oneself accepting the results like the one in the video.
