Actually, you touched on something that I kind of experienced just recently. One of my friends' wives read my book and she can't wait to read the next one. This was great and all, but not where I picked up my inspiration. It was what she said to me recently that hit me in the inspires. I self-published in 2017 and she read the book, so this whole time, she's been asking me when's the next book every time I saw her. So, now I have at least one fan. Recently, we got into a discussion about the book and I told her that I might change the first book because of sections that I didn't like and so I didn't think anyone else did either because no one had ever told me how they felt about it. When I finished, she told me that those parts were actually her favorite parts of the book. Huh! New perspective that I had not even considered. So, what I thought was rubbish was actually gold (at least for her). Now I have a renewed faith in myself and have found myself no dreading the writing sessions as much as I had before. Also, I love the car analogy. Just as you need to have a map to where you're going, you need to fuel up. I find myself allowing me to play my video games before I start writing instead of the reverse (which has NOT been working). Thank you both for your inspirational words and ideas.

I do procrastinate on my writing. But I like my book. I think the most helpful thing for me you have said so far is to show up for yourself. I've written it on a white board in my kitchen. I have been waiting so long to have the time to write. I am recently retired, but take care of my husband who is disabled, I am learning to give my dreams and talent a place to become in my life.If I don't show up for myself how can I expect any one else to.I owe that encouragement to you. Thank you for fanning into flame 🔥 the spark of creativity in your audience. And encouraging us to follow the dream. Sometimes we need permission. Love you two. ROCK ON

This is literally all I have been waiting for!!! Procrastination is the devil of the writing world 🤣🤣 I remember when I was 12-16 I would just sit down and write these stories that I had created in my head and lived there rent free. I didnt write them then to please others I wrote them because to me they were a dream of another world and the characters where so near to my heart. Now, that I'm 22 I am trying to pursue a more professional form of writing a book for publication purposes and that's what holds me back.

I am a budding writer here in the Philippines. The majority of the population here are not readers especially in my home region of Cordillera where I am currently residing. People here are more focus on fulfilling the basic needs and consider the "ARTS" (acting, writing, singing, painting etc.) as hobbies, not serious careers and even waste of time. Having a job in the real world (carpenter, farmer, plumbing etc.) and "Professions" (doctors, lawyers, teachers etc.) are the one considered as genuine careers. I wrote and published my first book but not without difficulty. Nobody understood and supported me during my writing process with the exception of my mother and brother. There was even a time when I thought of discontinuing my writing and concentrate on having a job because of the situations I mentioned. Online jobs ( I am involved with aside from pursuing my writing) are not even considered here as "real jobs" but only side hustle or side line. Only an additional source of income to the "main job" in the outside world. I thank God for the existence of the internet because I was able to learn how to write and still learning (not in the professional level yet) and I do believe that my manuscript must have been rejected many times or did not have the chance to be published without the editors and publisher who were willing to take a risk on me through the internet. Thank you for the author tube channels and the lessons and advices they (including this youtube channel) gave to aspiring writers such as myself. More power and continue helping beginner and aspiring writers.

The form of procrastination that I deal with is like a part of the inner atmosphere I think within... it seems to be ever-present. It has to do with Kate's reflections in the above video, but not so much on intimidation of myself or expectations that are too high. I have ADHD and my procrastination sneaks up on me and it's not until I realize I'm in "1,000-yard-stare" mode that I snap out of it and write again. I'm 2/3s of the way into a YA novel on a theme of "the power of books" but would likely have been done some time ago if this, not sinister, but silently ambiguous cloud of nothingness didn't sneak up on me so often... I'm writing along with you on youtube the past few days and somehow that activity seems to disempower "the cloud of nothingness" to some extent, so I thought I'd chime in and say thanks.

thank you so much for this video. yeah, i certainly struggle with this is both my art and my writing, some days i just don't have the will to do anything. you are right that overthinking and negative thoughts are the killer to our inner muse and it is often hard to not let those things consume you. but you are right if we constantly give in to those negative thoughts, we would never accomplish anything good in our lives.

The "inner knowledge should be sufficient than your emotions" is what my biggest takeaway. Bec reason why i procrastinate so much is i wait to get inspired or when im in love or angry or sad that i put all my emotions on paper. But when everythings fine and dandy, no writing for me. Never good. But the problem is, when im just writing with my mind and not feeling these strong emotions, the words are bland to me and lack heart imo.

The part about "something someone said about your work" is so relatable. It's not that someone hated my work-no one's done that so far-it's what some people said about my character when I was tripping online. On the one hand, the road toward doing anything that could be described as publishing or showing my face again has been a sluggish one because of-what do you know?-procrastination, but on the other hand it's given be time to slowly overcome my paranoia. Edit: By "my character" I mean me as a person.

I am 12 chapters/92,862 words into the book that I've been writing since NaNoWriMo of 2021. I'm so afraid of it being too long, not creative enough, contrived/unbelievable, and too niche that it won't appeal to a broad audience. But it's a story that has been in my heart for years and a story that I *need* to write. I'm enjoying it, but I'm really, deeply afraid that when all is said and done, I'm the only one who will enjoy this story and I will have written it in vain. This is what keeps me up at night.

Intimidation is a good term… self-intimidation. It's a hard lesson to learn! Before each scene, I worry about how difficult this one might be to write for varying reasons… I get anxious for hours if not days before writing it. And then I actually write it, and it takes an hour or two to write 1-2000 words, and it was enjoyable, and the result is good, and then… And then I have the same emotional block, the same self-intimidation when I look at the next scene. Gotta improve on that! Also: a clip of your discussion about needing to refuel along the journey would make for an excellent RU-vid Short.

Thank you so much for this video. It's just what I needed. I'm a beginner writer and for a long time I put my writing aside because I thought It's not good enough for publishing. But since I discovered this channel and Abbie's channel, I found the confidence to keep writing and my writing improved a lot thanks to your and Abbie's advice. Now the only thing I'm still not sure about is the internal conflict that I came up with for the story. My main character is a horse and since Abbie said that characters can have internal conflict even if they are not human, I wanted my character to have an internal conflict, which is that the horse doesn't trust humans because was abused in the past. The reason for this is that I want to raise awareness of the animal abuse, especially the abuse that's happening often in equestrian sports behind the scenes. But I'm not sure that this internal conflict is good enough for the story. I feel like it's too simple. I would like to know your opinion on this🙂
@TheGinnyhp
@TheGinnyhp Год назад
You have the fear: humans. You need the desire: (to be free) (to reach a green field the horse saw on a billboard) (to find his brother) Fear vs Desire= Misbelief Fear: Humans vs (freedom, etc) = The only way to be free is to avoid humans. This Misbelief is the opposite of the Truth you want to share with the world maybe (freedom is only possible working with (good) humans). So you'll need to write backstory first so write 4 scenes from the horse's POV. 1. the origin of the Fear and how the horse needed the Misbelief to survive. This can be when the horse is a colt and suffers or gets out of a situation by avoiding humans. 2-4 are building reinforcement for the fear of humans. This brings you to the actual beginning of your real story. Hope this helps! Sounds like a cool story. Good luck.
@emokekolumban2287
@emokekolumban2287 Год назад
@@TheGinnyhp The horse's desire is to escape to a place where she can live with a herd of horses away from humans. But since domestic horses can't really survive in the wild without humans, this is the truth the horse will realize in the end and that the only way she can have a good life is if a good human takes care of her. Now I just need to write a backstory. I also built the reinforcement for the horse's fear: she is sold from owner to owner and has to participate in horseracing, barrel racing, rodeo etc) where she is abused because the owners are only focused on winning at all costs. Then she is sold to a good horse trainer and this is where she is pushed out of her comfort zone: she can't escape and has to learn to trust the trainer, who tries to save her life because she became aggressive towards humans as a defence strategy to escape abuse and everybody tells the horse trainer that the horse has to be put down. I wanted this to be the bigger external conflict because sadly that's what happens to "untrainable" horses. In most cases people blame the horse even if it's their fault, not the horse's. And thank you so much for the advice. Now I'm sure this will be a good story. It's called Soaring with the Wind. I'm writing the whole story from the horse's perspective kind of like Black Beauty but without the horse's thoughts so the way I write is more like White Fang by Jack London🙂
@lindagutierrez5409
@lindagutierrez5409 Год назад
I love your idea of the horse as a main character, they’re such intelligent creatures, they can have trust issues. Maybe the person or persons are part of a therapy group, that also have trust issues, and help the horse. Cool concept!
@emokekolumban2287
@emokekolumban2287 Год назад
@@lindagutierrez5409 to be honest, at first I was kind of hesitant to make the horse the main character because I thought the trainer who helps the horse could be a more complex character than the horse but after watching the movie "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron" and "Black Beauty" (1994 version) I changed my mind because horses are indeed very intelligent animals and they could easily be the main character in a story. They can even have a unique personality because each horse is different. But in my opinion, not just horses but every animal is intelligent in their own way. And this was the reason why I started writing this story, because it makes me sad when I see an animal being mistreated or abused. Especially horses because they are mistreated most often, because there are people who think that horses are just these big, dumb animals that have to be treated harshly to know who is the boss and every time something is wrong they blame and punish the horse... And I think the best way to change that is to educate people and raise awareness, which is the purpose of the story I'm working on. It's called Soaring With The Wind. And by the way, the person who helps the horse in the story is the trainer's daughter. And training the horse benefits her too because she is shy and that way she learns how to be confident, because in order to train the horse she needs to be confident, calm and serious. Not harsh but serious, so the horse sees her as the leader and respects and listens to her without being afraid of her.

I'm stuck between "I should definitely write something shorter, practice my writing skills with short stories and flash fiction!" and "The only thing that is exciting is a historical romance including astronomy that will be VERY difficult for me!" What the h*ll do I do? Do I write the novel because that's the only thing I'm passionate about, or do I force myself to do something more constructive to speed up my learning curve, like writing short stories and flash fiction? Just fyi I’m a Swede, so I will not be writing in English. Sorry for any mistakes.
