In this golf instruction from golf experts Mike Granato and Shaun Webb of Athletic Motion Golf, you'll discover the secrets to a perfect golf swing by demonstrating the proper way to move the lead shoulder across in the golf swing, just like the pros. They explain how amateurs tend to move their lead shoulder downward, which can lead to a steep swing and ultimately affect the golf shot.
The Atletic Motion Golf team provides useful tips on proper shoulder movement and demonstrates how to do it using a simple left-handed handshake technique. They also emphasize the importance of not pointing the shoulders at the golf ball, a common mistake that can affect the swing.
The video includes footage and explains how to create the right concept to make the correct lead shoulder movement in the golf swing.
Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned golfer, this video provides practical tips and insights to help you improve your golf swing and game.

I was one of those guys who used to try to lower my lead shoulder to the ball, and failed miserably at it. Not to mention the pain it caused in my lower back. Once I started doing as you guys suggested my lower back stopped and my strike improved greatly. Thanks for confirming that I did the right thing. I stopped trying to emulate the Men's Tour and learned my own swing. If I emulate anyone, it's the women's tour, they are closer to us amateurs in terms of club head speed and distance. Cheers.

Would like to see some videos breaking down the "over the top" from the inside style of swing of Bobby Jones, Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, Abraham Ancer, Hovland and lots of others old and new. Dragging it away low and inside then lifting it and almost throwing it like skipping a rock release where shaft on downswing is perpendicular to torso. And shaft achieves right arm intersection before release. Appears over the top but hits all the perfect downswing markers. And appears to exit hard left after impact. Would love to see this with the tour swing animations. Thanks!!

I always had the concept in mind that the shoulders rotate perpendicular to the spine angle set at address. While trying to keep the hands and club in front of the chest, no further "deeper" than the trail shoulder. The old concept I was told 25 years ago was move the front shoulder into the air space the trail shoulder once occupied, while maintaining the same spine angle and tilt. It was physically impossible but was a great concept then.

A very common exercise couches give to their students: Club across your shoulders, rotate, and the club should point towards the ball!!! One of several exercises spreading misconceptions, causing a lot of unneccesary strain, making it impossible to learn a good golfswing. Other important concepts that causes players to introdce unnecessary strain when practiced incorrectly are "width" and "depth". Thank you guys for giving us these clarifications! 👍

I just keep thinking about how Nicklaus, Snead, et al. always talked about getting the shoulder under the chin. Nicklaus was particularly adamant about that being his checkpoint for "completing the backswing," although I agree that's more a term of art and perception, in the context of how the swing is understood now (with recentering and transition going on well before whatever a person sees as the "top" of the backswing). But the point is, every great player in the game's history would've thought it was pretty much nonsense to try to keep the lead shoulder around the same vertical plane it was (face-on) at address. (Some of you may remember Carl Lohren's "One Move" thing, which helped a lot of players. For those who don't, it had to do with making the lead shoulder movement the first and controlling movement in the takeaway. Right from the start.) What amazes me is how much modern instruction involves these assertions (dip the shoulder, point the shoulder at the ball, keep it in the same space, "don't turn your shoulders") that make their way around the internet, various YT teachers pick them up, things become part of the collective jargon, and hardly anybody says "wait a minute, maybe Nicklaus and Hogan and Snead, and a pile of others too, weren't _totally_ clueless about the golf swing." If a teacher is going to tell people to totally ignore something those guys said was important, to me it goes without saying that this puts a giant burden of proof on that teacher. But so many people just eat up anything they find out here now. That's the beauty of what AMG does -- it's all quantified, no guessing. One addendum here: I do think it's important to distinguish between what "head still" or "head steady" means and what it means to have the back of your neck, or the top of your spine, moving around very much during the swing. Nicklaus agreed that the best understanding of "head still" was more like "quiet" or steady, not rigid and tense and avoiding even swiveling around the neck, and that good players could have a little counterbalancing going on (which in the old reverse-C days meant a slight downward and backward movement). But a lot of what's tabbed as "head movement" in modern pros is really the swivel of the front side (the face) with the top of the spine as an axis. If you put a cursor where the back of the neck is (or would be, looking through from the front) on the players in this video, you'll see hardly any movement on the backswing. The excessive movement that can give players a lot of trouble is really more the swaying and tipping of the top of the spine. And even with players who move off the ball a little -- Faldo comes immediately to mind, although most of his movement is also swivel -- it's pretty remarkable how steady that gets once the player has really set in on the downswing. But still, as even Nicklaus used to say, you don't want that steadiness to come from tension and an effort to kill movement in general.

And I was wondering why the heck my head always lowered too much in the backswing (dipping), why I was falling off balance towards the ball, why I couldn't make a fuller turn back, why I couldn't get deeper with my hands and most importantly of ALL... Why I kept coming over the top in the downswing no matter what I did! Very interested on hearing you views on this mussel memory method, or in simple terms in the back swing do we turn or rotate the steering wheel to the right or left and do we try to rotate or turn the wheel right or left on the down swing. Why I ask after a bone marrow transplant I lost my mussel memory. PS I'm a swinger not a hitter.

Thanks for another great video. A question on the shallowing vid. When the arm lowers and connects with the ribcage how long does it stay connected thru the rest of the swing?

Thanks for the great videos. Please demonstrate how to keep left shoulder down when starting the down swing.

This was an awesome video, I’ve been working on this and I gotta say it’s going great. It’d be great if you did a similar video for the downswing 😏

The shoulder does move down AND across. If you just move across you will have a very flat shoulder plane with very bad results.

@@rdl99 did you here us say, show, or demonstrate the shoulder only moves across?

Realized I was doing this incorrectly, has been a game changer since I started to address it. A really helpful tip I have found is putting a glove under the left arm pit, sticking just out the front. Then, if your posture/setup is good, turning while keeping the glove from falling, helps make a proper turn. Can also do it on the course by balling up your sleeve under your arm. Really has been a game changer, and something I fall back on when thing's are getting out of sync.

Love the channel! As follow-up to your absolutely brilliant hip rotation videos, would love to see your views and analysis on the inclination of the hips and how it relates to rotation (and maybe some pros vs ams). Thanks!

I’ve always struggled getting my hands deeper in the backswing. Just thinking about this topic, would the lead shoulder being too tilted toward the ball in the backswing contribute to shallow depth at the top? Seems like in theory it’d be way harder to move your hands deeper with a really steep shoulder turn.
@AthleticMotionGolf
@AthleticMotionGolf 3 месяца назад
The hands only move a few inches across the body, depth comes from turn. Anyone we’ve seen who is trying to get their shoulders steep, does so at the expense of not getting their lead shoulder across enough (turn). What you said is something we see every day.

Thanks. Makes sense then. If you’re simply tilting down more than you’re turning, hands aren’t going to be very deep at the top.

Great video. Makes huge sense. Here's a question, I have a choice for a lesson with my local pro or to get some online tuition from AMG. I'm returning to golf after a long hiatus but still relatively young (40) and fit. I'm 6'3 and a shade under 200lbs in y'all Yankee weight units. It's tight fiscal times these days so I can only choose 1. I'm in the process of building a backyard practice range so I can practice twice a week and play every 2nd weekend.

Great video! I Had some of my best range and golf rounds last few days. More power and distance. My Back is still a problem working on conditioning, I am fit but lower back lumbar issue. Toe touches are the worst for me. Mobility otherwise is excellent for my age,54. I have a question. Why would 90 degree feet, no foot flare help my swing. I have flared my feet in hope of freeing up my hips with minimal results. Feet 90 degrees to the target line appears to have transformed my swing. Actually less strain with no flare. Would love to hear why this may work for my body type, movement tendencies. I experimented and really strike the ball better with squared feet. Thoughts?

Wry tough to answer without seeing how you move. We typically recommend a small equal amount of flare in each foot. Foot flare is often WAY over done. Don’t change what you’re doing if it works 👊🤓
