The other day my husband and I went to Petco to pick up some mystery snails, and while we were waiting to be helped, he struck up a conversation with an older couple that was there. They confessed that they were struggling with having fish die in their aquarium, so my husband suggested adding some real plants in, and one of them grumbled that then it would be too ugly to bother with. I was thoroughly blown away by that attitude! Aquatic plants are gorgeous, and dead fish are very much not.

@@FatherFish, just seems strange to me. I struggle trying to figure out who's doing all the massive water changes in the ponds and lakes every week or so? I never see it so it must be at night or something. Or....no wait.....I got it! It's God's " men in black"! They do it then flash their pen lights and wipe out memory of the billion gallon water changes in the lakes and ponds. I may have had an epiphany! Life pausing. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Blessings abundant Father Fish Crawford out 🙏🏻🔥⚒️🧙🏻‍♂️

Great video FF, a deep substrate really is the best thing an aquarium can ever have. Even with a lot of fish, the substrate is a chemical filter in itself,which keeps the water healthy. I will always have a deep substrate in every tank from now on !

10:00 If the big fish you bought was already insane and rips everything up that you planted, then you should make a sump with a planted refugium. The sump will filtrate the tank and the fish can't get into the refugium to destroy the plants.

I think aside from over cleaning, another issue with many fishkeepers is that they want to keep lots of fish, and big fish. And the fish stores will also (or they used to) sell people pleco as tank cleaners, when experienced fish keepers know they are some of the biggest poo producers, and don't clean much algae either... They look gnarly but I don't think they are suitable for anything but the largest of aquariums. Fish stores also sell some snails that don't breed so easily, so fishkeepers can't afford to buy or keep them in numbers that would make any difference to algae control in their tank. Snails are seen by many fish keepers as pests, which is sad, when their useful job is to keep your nice plants leaves clear of green and brown algae and allows them to flourish. I wish I had discovered Ramshorn snails earlier on in my fishkeeping hobby.

FF is correct, starting with ponds 35yrs ago, I learnt very quickly, without any test kits or fancy filters back then, that moss, algae and plants were the absolute key to clear water, not changing out 50% of the water 3 times a week 😂 TDS is probably the only thing I monitor on aged tank and a test kit if I have an unexplained issue identified from fish behaviour. I pulled the co2 injection off my aquascape 6 months after it was set up, no it doesn't look as crisp and immaculate and bright, but my sterbai corys have bred, my shrimp have gone from 6 to over 200, no water changes, plants growing like mad, dirty cannister filters that get alternate rinses every 4 months.. so that's 3 filter rinses a year. Tank is thriving😊

ater watching your videos FF I immedietely cut back on what I feed my fish, I cleaned up my tank and my fish seem fine but my son in law's fish are not, they were in a tank with gravel and plastic junk till recently and overfed more than my fish, also he's been kinda alack cleaning the water unfortunately plus there lighting was poor with no tank light After finding your channel I have been trying to get him to swtch to a planted tank but nothing has happened there and sadly one of the fish looks like he has some fungal condition so I changed the tank myself with my daughters help but I think it may be too late for this poor fish, he's tough though he's hanging in there, I saw him today resting on one of the shorter plants I put in and his companion is watching over him, the tank is much healthier now and I loaned them my light which only covers half of the top but it's better than nothing, my tank is using my desk light atm, we're getting a bigger light tomorrow I will ask about an antifungal treatment.

Since discovering your channel I'd probably at some point try your method in another tank but as for now. There's two things I learned. I still have algea so I probably need to plant more plants and secondly, I stopped doing water changes. I don't know if with aquasoil it's a good idea to stop water changes but so far nothing has changed in my tank and my water parameters are still fine!

I have a 55 gallon overflow tank. Can this be converted? I only have two large fish - a pleco and a Chinese algae eater. The water overflows at the top, goes down through a filter that I have to change every week, then goes thru bio-balls, through bio ceramic rings, flows through the charcoal bags then back to the pump. The tank is constantly needing to be cleaned, not to mention the racket and noise it makes. I'd love to try this, just don't know if it would work with the overflow tank. I had decided in 2008 I'd had enough and when the fish were gone, that was it. The two I have left are warriors. Actually bought the larger tank just for them. I'd love to see them in a better environment.

Dear Father Fish, I hope you can take the time to help me. I was never so lucky to have arrived at your channel by searching for "fish in wells", because I was curios if biology is the secret to keeping water clean. You see, I have a pretty sterile cement cistern that collects rainwater for consumption, it now has many dead insects like scorpions and centipedes (dry season), and if and when I pull the bucket up with one disintergrating the water, it smells bad. One can tell the smell of decomposition is not very good for drinking. The cistern has a 1m by 1m access hatch beneath the sun that is kept covered. Water is very clear, what is in the water naturally settles. What would you have done if you were me? Would putting soil and sand alone help keep the water thriving. I appreciate life, and it is impossible to keep a cistern sterile. How will adding decent amount of microbial biology in the form of substrate work in this case? Would you go as far as putting in fish, larger forms of life? I will be deeply indebted if you could advise me. Thank you so much.

I like the whole idea of a planted tank and trying to mimic nature in it but water changes are essential for healthy fish and shrimp conditions. I think alot just over due them. Sure, if your on a budget going to your local water source, creating a jar ecosphere and seeding your tank is 1 way to introduce those little critters..both good and bad to your tank..but keeping a separate live food culture is probably the better option for most people. I think Father Fish is on the right track but his hands off approach is better suited for live food conditions as most would prefer a sightly aquarium. The additional live did source is just a bonus..for some species anyway. Im not convinced on his deep sand bed method, not to mention the different paramaters other species require. FF has still has lots to learn and consider. He must have a big tank for 20,30,40 amazon swords and it sure aint the 1 in the bachground. jmho.

a large net is easier to use without tearing up the plants. Use the net to press the plants down. As fish rise to the top they will be easier to scoop up.

Is there any Father Fish videos on overstocking a tank and how much fish you can have?
@FatherFish

Not really. Generally with lots of plants you can have lots of fish.

Hi father fish. Do marbles in a tank work with breeding lemon tetras? I know it is not natural but someone suggested it works...thoughts Sir?

Marbles 2 layers deep protect non adhesive eggs from being eaten.

Is it the same if I plants on top of the tank...and roots In the water?
@eveningclicks7767

You need plants in the substrate too. Lots of plants in the tank. When you look in your tank from above, approximately 50% of the bottom should look like plants.

It's not that expensive... Just add in 50 plants at $12 each... I would love a planted tank but man that is one hell of an investment for something I'm not even sure I can keep alive.

This was a fun watch! Didn’t mind the memes a bit! Mix em up and have some fun! Life is too short to not experiment. Some may disagree, but enuf serious stuff in real life. Better to laugh and break up a maybe stressful fragment of our lives to experience a bit of humor….humor but also strewn with facts. Thank you ff! Have a blessed and fun day! You just made mine! 😊☮❤🐠🦐🪴
