I was working with a few guys online a long time ago online (when I was working on passion projects online with others) and came to discover most of them had little to no technical knowledge on anything they were doing. They spent time learning how to type in commands instead of learning the deep technical back-end of things. Don’t be those guys, be the self taught expert who knows the ins and outs.

This is a great message. When i was introduced to cyber security, i started with CISSP.. luckily CISSP had some networking areas but to improve my understanding, i decided to do CompTIA Network +, most people will prefer going straight into the fancy stuff but the foundation is always important, there's just certain things you can't skip.
dammn yo, you started with the CISSP? did you have an IT-related college degree at the time? I'm finishing a cybersecurity associates degree right now and plan on getting the CompTIA Security+ certification.
This is something that’s frustrated me, when I first decided to get into cybersecurity it took me a bit to find good quality channels and filter out the rest.

That's the problem with this era in general. The dopamine rushes from tic tok and instagram give people a sense of instant gratification, which is why they don't want to spend long hours studying. But people should realize that the only way to learn something and be really good at it is to dedicate time to it in the long run.
I just saw this video and it kind of opened my eyes. I kind of had this phenomenon in the back of my mind, but I never really thought about it. I've watched quite a few videos that are a little below my level. But most of the time I told myself that it could help me manifest the basics. The truth is that most of these videos were a big waste of time. Time I could have spent on THM or HTB, VulnHub, PicoCTF or something like Protostar. Had I realized this earlier I could have completed most of the THM or HTB Boxes when I was young, alongside with High school, back in 2016/17 instead of struggling with it now, in my limited time alongside my studies.
Honestly, I started watching this channel since the last 1 year I have learned a lot, what I like from this channel is that it always explains in detail and very slowly so that my brain is very fast to catch every explanation explained by Alexis, I am very grateful for this channel :)
Interesting to see a video like this. RU-vid content creators have certainly increased the amount of script kiddies we're having to deal with. A script kiddie is dangerous, misconfiguration and inadvertent consequences (running things you don't yet understand.) pose a huge threat to any company/team/crew. He is most likely talking about NetworkChuck. Hackers have typically been blaming him for the influx of kiddies in recent times.
Yeah, and it's a shame. Chuck has put out some very useful material, presented in an engaging manner. Personally, I'm annoyed that his increasingly clickbaity titles make it difficult to find the specific info I'm after. As far as his impact on script kiddies, I don't know how much we can pin on him directly. Realistically, anyone putting out good red team training is going to up the numbers and effectiveness of kiddies. He's just been more effective working with the youtube algorithm to increase exposure. Sure, it'd be nice if everyone took Hackersploit's angle and only marketed towards industry professionals. That would help minimize random people having the content come across their feed and trying stuff out. I can't really hate Chuck though. He's just doing what youtubers do, exploiting his niche, maximizing his exposure, and maximizing his earnings. At the end of the day, in the cyber sec space, much like in greater society, I've just got to keep the faith that more people are good and will always outweigh the efforts of the few malicious actors. Otherwise, we have to sacrifice a lot of access to information and freedoms.
Indeed I agree with you here, for the most part. The people may not be malicious, but as Alexis says... You shouldn't be using port scanners unless you actually understand the packets, the ports, the scripts that nmap runs. Even an 11 year old can use metasploit to get shells on servers (I know because I was doing it at 11), but I lacked all the knowledge to do any priv esc and didn't even know the file structure. That's how they end up doing damage by complete accident, it's not necessary malicious but we still have to remediate.

It will be interesting to see if his views start to take a hit as more pros get fed up. Or maybe high energy, low depth "info-tainment" is what people want. I know that's broadly true in modern society, but I'm slower to believe that it's true in technical fields. *shrugs* We'll see...
Well said! I am a cybersecurity professional and I love learning the basics. Things change fast and the industry has to adapt quickly. Project objectives creep and move into areas one may not know a lot about but still have to know about it. If you learn the basics you can make sense of the subject matter and make an informed decision. If you skip it you dont really understand it and can make a bad decision. So far I have been trying to go by three things really. 1) Be humble enough to ask questions. 2) Enjoy learning new things. 3) Its amazing what you can get done if you dont focus on the credit received. One example is that dude Loi , who NEVER actually teaches something, he shows off his skills, but never answer any comments and trivializes Cybersecurity, he just DEMONSTRATES something really fast (No explanations) and thats it.... Game over

Same here, if I could go back and tell myself one thing prior to enrolling in a formal degree, it'd be to just do it on my own instead. I feel like I learned way more during 3 or so months of studying from RU-vid prior than I have the last 6 months at my school.

You are completely right! I can name few content creators who wants only advertise money and making video all about metasploit and automatic pwn tools, with no background information at all. I study cybersec in college and it’s a huge mix of science and practical skills. Imagine what if metasploit stops working- what this people going to do.
Im getting into Cybersecurity and I committed to developing my skills for 2 years before looking for positions. I want to pursue my bachelors and masters in cybersecurity and I appreciate you bringing reality to this. It definitely is sold like it can happen in just a couple months but just from what I’ve learned so far, I called BS lol
This is a great and very important video! As a fellow cybersecurity content creator, I get that it can be challenging creating content that is equal parts engaging and educational. That said, there are definitely folks out there that don't even try to find a way to educate and instead make complete garbage. It's also challenging for the rest of the industry because there's SO much more to the field than just "hacking". Like that's just one piece of a whole ecosystem of cool things like forensics, threat intelligence, cyber defense, etc. I think we all play a role in trivializing the industry by making "hacking" come off as demonstrative of the whole field.
I agree with your message, but I think we can not get rid of it! Scammers are everywhere, for as long as they are getting views/money for their videos, they, and many more will keep doing it!

I am glad that you are actually posting stuff about Wireshark, how to properly use SIEMs, Snort, and all of that good stuff. That's what SOC analysts actually need to know. Pen tester jobs are really few in between.

I am glad that you/someone reputable said this. It's not just Cyber security either, it is the other things you mentioned too, Web design/coding, and other technical skills. There are too many sites that the way the teach a subject is a set environment, which is rarely found in a real life scenario, and rather than teaching you the skills from a conceptual standpoint, they teach them from a situational one, which quickly breaks down just with the updates to Kali and Parrot. If I would 'ask' something of Cyber Sec Content makers (the good ones) is to make your video titles for mid to upper level content 'easier for idiots to search for'. lol Thanks

As someone just starting in cybersecurity. Currently Studying for my SEC+ for fundametal know how. I want to thank you for this great peace of advice because i did watch those videos. And this was a great introspective moment for me to wake up. i will definitely start to level myself up.
Fantastic video as always, and you make some very solid points. Its a shame a lot of people get "played" by false advertising, I feel like a lot of my classmates fell victim to this as half the class ended up not being active after about half the semester, and didn't exactly realize how much studying cybersecurity involves.

Your point about the renaissance and how important it is to specialize rather than generalize everything to learn nothing hit home for me and in it is one of my biggest struggles, when it came to me actually studying I would try to get one thing and jump to another trying to cram stuff in but many times never understood it (this specially happened when I tried to get into Python and could guess why I thought i would get into "learning" that). I would then waste a week frustrated that I can't progress try to get back in something "trendy" get disappointed and had this back and forth ever since I graduated last November. I do admit I had fallen privy to those type of trendy channels in fact it was partly because of those articles and promotional videos that I even gotten a interest in cybersecurity in the first place. That being said great video and points brought up here.
I would just like to say that this is the sound of reason in a space filled with a lot of noise. Now I can tune out all that noise and focus on growing my skillset. I think a reason most content creators have large followings is they put out a lot of content in a short span of time which gives an illusion of competence. Makes us amateurs idolize them cause we think they know everything. We end up not learning anything at all. Thanks a lot man.

Got into cyber 1 year ago today. I quickly realized the importance of fundamentals. Since then I have spent the last year focusing on how it all works. I cannot tell you the amount of confidence I have going into this season of preparing for finding an internship or job. From my point of view, hacking is not a quick easy win, where you learn something or solve some challenges. Hacking is much more about being curious, able to search, discover and learn rapidly, but at the same time dive into what you are investigating. it's not about remembering everything or knowing everything (impossible), it's about being fascinated by what you are doing and don't follow "trend" blindly
This is an effect that every industry is getting hit with. I feel it's more prevelant in the US since the cost of education is so high. People are trying to find ways to get high salary jobs/worthwhile education without the 6 figure debt of university (and considering the increasing uncertainty of the economy). What can be realistically accomplished in any industry is being obfuscated by get-"rich"-quick styled "influencers" who turn serious subject-matters into infotainment. I'm learning what I can at my own pace, but I understand this is a goal that im going to have to invest multiple years of my time before I even get my foot in the door. This video hits the nail on the head. Ive been in the Industry for 4 years, along that period ive been a sys admin, a infrastructure technician and have started my transition into info-sec/cyber security after just finishing my degree within the related field.... its no joke how people assume they can just jump onto the bandwagon with cyber security. I myself are still a novice to the specialisations!.
Well said I completely agree. It is too bad RU-vid takes away the dislike button and makes so many incentives just to go for quick cash. I have had some friends who want to get in the industry and I also tell them to stay away from those videos. I think it really trivializes these advanced topics and discourages people from digging deeper. I think in the long run not focusing on profits and focusing on creating great output is the most profitable.

I’m still relatively new to the field, but even I have noticed some channels that are just regurgitating content from others, using clickbait titles with zero actual substance, and so on. I appreciate your candor, it’s needed nowadays. Funnily enough, I’m one of those people you were talking about. I’ve watched you for almost two years and never knew your name. :) You turn out great content, so thank you for sharing that with us!
100% agree. people need to focus on leveling up and learn the skills. There are many people in the field cannot advance themselves because they overlook the fundamentals.

Cyber Security is hard, because one has to learn a lot of technologies! It takes time to master the craft and some people don't understand. Absolutely on it. Fundamentals are crucial. I've been doing Hackthebox for four months and have a bit of trouble. It was last week that I stopped and said to myself, Self- you need to be really good at Linux, i.e. shells, commands, terminal, directory tree, etc. I felt lost, so, I'm going to get solid on the shell/bash and commands then bounce back into Hackthebox. Between HTB and this channel, I've learned a lot. In fact I like this channel so much that Ill be taking one of your courses at the end of June. Keep doing what you're doing, brother. By the way, Privilege Escalation is what I like the best. It's OK if you can get into a system, but the greatness comes from knowing what to do once you get in. That's an art in itself!
Well first off I am not looking to get into this field, but I have been a subscriber of your channel for about a year now, because it is nice to see some competent coverage of the cyber security field. I watch to get an understanding of how computer systems work and how computers systems are exploited, simply to know how to protect my own systems. I know, from this video, that I am not your target audience, but I still appreciate the content that you produce. I hope that this message in this video reaches those that need to hear it. It's so true.
Completely on board with you. As someone who is switching from finance to cyber, I came across this type of content creators who say “learn to trade in 3 days” type of stuff. They devalue years of learning, hard core qualifications such as CFA with 40-45% pass rates (total of 1200 hours of learning on average). I consider myself as a smart guy, but I struggle with cyber content and pay my dues to this amazing industry and community. Thank you for your hard work
Yeah man I also found it difficult to find good and genuine content from which I can improve my skills when I was starting all I was getting bullshits like "how to hack facebook" and all a boat load of crap. Anyways love your content bro 👍👍
Amen.. I actually had a few young people who ask me to mentor them get upset with me over this same topic. They felt as if I was being unfair to them sending them on a learning path of fundamentals and hands on training. They attended all these conferences on blacks in tech and taking pics. I asked them to explain to me what a computer network is and the basics of how the internet works and got crickets. Instead they send me videos of a guy saying he can get you a 6 figure job with no technical hands on skill in 90 days in governance.
My brother, more people need to say this.. but as a new viewer and subscriber with a recent interest in cyber security, your channel has been monumental in my education. I can’t express enough admiration for the fact that you openly do not care about creating attractive thumbnails promising a magical 2 day start into cyber security. That kind of integrity and genuineness is found in less than 1% of the population today; where it’s all about greed, wealth and selfish gain. From my perspective, I think there is an importance to develop an understanding of the language and terminology of a field so you can disern the quality of what your reading\hearing. It is important to not watch content but also to honor your time. The RU-vid algorithm really wants you to just watch and keep watching. And often what you watch does alter how you see things. I watch this channel so I can increase my domain knowledge. It guides me on areas I should read in more detail, where my own understanding might be questionable. I can tell you at the end of the day as my knowledge has grown, it has allowed me to question and suggest approaches in the IT Projects in my office. For myself, everytime a questionable channel shows up as a suggested video I choose 'don't suggest this channel'. We need to learn and also live our lives. So Thank you Alexis for your well thought out and quality content. I truly appreciate it.

bro i was interested in cybersecurity for past 3 or 4 years but couldnt find anyone teaching basics, mostly it was some heavy commands which i had no knowledge of but your series of " Linux Essentials" has taught me more than i learned in over years fascinating content atleast i know what i am doing and where i am going
I've been in IT for 18 years. I recently got out of Cybersecurity and went back to Systems Engineering. I'm thankful for my 6 year stint as a Security Engineer. I feel like it's helped me become an even better, well rounded Systems Engineer, but there's just too much ego in Cybersecurity... more than Systems Engineering (at least that's my take). I dig your videos, even the fundamental vids. Although I'm ditching the CyberSec field, I'm staying subbed because I like the field and I like your vids... I just don't like what CyberSec has become.

I'm reminded of a discord conversation about why companies should only hire the top 20 percent cybersecurity job applicants....someone reminded the person who ignored the article attached to the post describing how 6 teenagers hacked into a company while their top 20 percent cybersecurity professional failed in prohibiting the hack.
@@BobBob-qm2bm Cybersecurity is everyone’s responsibility. The cybersecurity department at your enterprise takes the lead in preventing hacks and raising security awareness but they are not solely responsible for preventing hacks. It’s a JOINT EFFORT. Never forget that.
100% Right. Too many click trip vids out and for people in other countries, it can cause much confusion. I had to learn this the hard way. This is why I say just stay constant and take time. You cant learn this in one night, it takes time.
I say it’s something for everyone. People have to start somewhere, and clicking on the sillier videos, may pique their interest more, but the algorithms on the various platforms, will also suggest some other deeper content. Also, they will learn to research to find out more about the topic. People will take many paths to reach a goal. Perhaps, they start on the clickbait videos, but eventually find more structured content on other platforms. If they truly have a passion for learning and growing, they will realize the frauds, because they’ll come away from the content empty. I appreciate it all. What I don’t like, I ignore. If a person doesn’t know the fundamentals of cyber security , they will be weeded out during the interview process, and they will learn from it. The journey may be different, but the road may lead to the exact same place. I’m still learning and feel like I can never know enough. Thank you for your content. Update: Haha!! Yes, that’s pretty bad, but again, the hope is that it can lure viewers in to get their palettes wet, for them to go out and find higher quality content.
Thank you so much for this sir. Cyber security became a passion of mines working helpdesk and always getting calls about phones being compromised. So I decided to research about the career and was exposed to that bull crap. I eventually noticed what hacking ACTUALLY is and it’s simply gaining unauthorized access to a system. How do you gain access to a system without knowing about the system? That realization made me realize that cyber security isn’t necessarily an entry level role and more so a transitional one from the IT path you know best. That’s what I get from my experience getting there and from the professionals I had the opportunity to have a conversation with. I dont often play 30 minutes videos on RU-vid, but Im glad I did on this one. I first found you while working towards my CCNA using INE, you dont teach networking but I still watched a few Of your vids because of my interest on infosec. I do agree, this is a specialized field and not easy to break into. Also I like the “focus on one thing” message.

Thank you Hackersploit, what an absolute giga-chad. I’m currently a freshman in college and I’ve learned that this specialized industry is no joke , it requires foundational skill. The IT field seems to be continually materalized into consumerism. (as what I can tell the specialized field is dealing with confidential information, it is not meant to be seen as something silly and can cost companies millions) I’ll admit myself I’ve failed with previously consuming the false product, though this video opened my eyes.

100 % correct there's no way a student can easily digest penetration testing concepts in a few weeks. One must spend weeks or months making sure you have the fundamentals set in concrete before you can engage the more complex terminology. Thanks for the honest review
