*I fixed it by rolling back drivers on several System Devices; all the SPI, I2C, LPC/eSPI controllers.* There were several other drivers that I rolled back but that weren't necessarily a problem. One of them added some kind of (driver missing!) pen device to the touchscreen and that went away when I reverted the touchscreen driver to a standard "HID-compliant touch screen."

In the vast majority of cases, updating drivers unnecessarily has zero practical effects. Drivers that aren't from your computer manufacturer aren't tested with your hardware the way the manufacturer drivers are. All generic driver updaters are a gimmick, a ruse, a scam. It's clear that you have no clue what you're talking about because "verified digitally signed device drivers" has been mandatory for all drivers since Windows 7 64-bit in 2009. You're clearly a shill for a company behind a trash piece of software that stands to lose money because I exist. I'll figuratively burn your company to the ground, bro. Don't screw with me.

My instinct tells me Driver Updater = Spyware Updater. There is a strong push for everything you do on the internet to be logged into a database. Wish I’d seen this a day ago. When you say “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” I wish Microsoft would listen. It was a Windows Update that screwed up one of my drivers, PC would go BSOD every hour or so in games afterwards. My quest to resolve that issue led me to the exact “driver updated” you mentioned. A few sites that had steered me okay before recommended it! So I run the scan, select only a few of the drivers it said needed updating, and boom. BSOD at boot, Windows won’t load. Tried system restore, and here’s the best part. Outbyte made so many system restore points (none of which worked, by the by) that it overrode or somehow eliminated the restore point I created before I even ran the scan.

Browsers are unfortunately the one program type that slowly stop working with modern sites when you don't ever update them. Try using Waterfox Classic; it's an updated version of pre-v57 Firefox that doesn't work with several modern sites due to lacking stupid new "features."

I use Driver Booster and it has found a lot of missing drivers on a lot of different systems where Windows update didn't and under device manager it showed up as unknown device or this device is not working etc. Also possibility that it's in tablet mode or something or on screen keyboard something like that can cause the keyboard not to work. Have you tried plugging in a USB keyboard. As well some keyboard functions don't work after upgrading say from Windows 8 to 10 or 10 to 11 often on older laptops. I had a Windows 7 HP Laptop that had several keys not working after upgrading it to 10.

Hello, i recently updated my driver using the red circle program in your thumbnail and now my pc wont start up properly. Ive tried reinstalling windows, i reset my pc(havent wiped all my personal files was hoping to not have to do that) and when i go to repair it says it cant repair. Usually what happens with these Driver Updaters is that they install incorrect drivers for your hardware, for example I know I tried using one over 10 years ago and it installed driver for a similar named Ethernet card and it made my cable connection spotty as if I was on weak WiFi...so weird. It does suck but it's best to search for updates manually.

Even gotta watch out for the microsoft "driver update suggestions". I have a Amazon chinese W10 stick computer (no longer being sold), that had a customized graphics driver (of which I can't seem to find any specific replacement, even straight from Intel.. it was an Intel graphics driver), and after applying the windows / microsoft suggested driver updates now the night mode no longer functions. Besides, I hate windoze.... been living on Ubuntu w/KDE now for years, just so much nicer in every way and more stable.

Hey is there any way to protect yourself from modded drivers? I know the obvious thing to do is to not use them, which is what I'm doing... but if one wanted to use them, is there any way to protect myself? (In this case it's a dll with edited hex code, but I'm not sure if there is even a way to actually examine the hex code or if that would take too long to be a viable option for someone that isn't a programmer.)

Drivers have to be digitally signed since Windows 7 64-bit, maybe even Vista (I can't remember), so there is no such thing as a modded driver. The mod would revoke the digital signature.

windows update already updates drivers through a database of stable drivers by microsoft, the only drivers you really need to update is graphics and cpu drivers windows update takes care of the rest (you can see driver updates in advanced options then click optional updates, third party driver updates are typically a waste of time now as windows 11 windows update provides stable good drivers

well well well, i just learned this the hard way, after i "updated" my drivers with Driver Booster. My Wi Fi stopped working after that, infact my Wi Fi Settings disappeared from my PC settings. I had to roll back everything, after i googled anxiously for half an hour, what a waste of time and my mental energy. Now i leave this driver stuff alone, it works, and when it works, i just leave it that way. Thank you for this PSA, now i now for better. :)

I found out that I completely wiped out the system, people mentioned to me I would have to have another computer and install windows 10 into a usb and install it to my broken pc. That is the only solution. (this is for anyone that was dumb enough and did the same thing as me lol)

@@bryuhMan lol yeah, my girlfriend has a pc herself so she bought a fresh usb and downloaded windows 10 on it (it doesn’t matter if the pc has windows 10-11, they can still download windows 10 fine for the usb) and had sent it over to my state and yeah, I hooked it up and it was like a new bought pc, where it made you sign in into windows and walking you through cortana and choosing your region stuff.

You should only get your drivers from the manufacturer, generally, except when it's a graphics driver which you can usually upgrade to the chip maker's latest driver instead in many cases.

@@glaze67 Any set of keys in a column-like section failing is an electrical failure. Keyboards are internally laid out in a sort of grid. When a column fails you'll lose all keys in the same vertical area.

This is a third-party tool that's doing this. Windows Update will install updated drivers, but they also almost never install updated drivers that don't function on the machine. It's pretty safe to let Windows update a driver itself. These third-party tools, however...

Should i reboot my whole pc? I uninstall it now but i dont know if theres other steps i should take. i had it install including another software CCleaner by a friend and it log me out of all of my logins on chrome and even before i can even log back in, i had a yellow line thing?? like it was recording my screen until i close out my chrome but it was around the whole screen even background

What i would recommend to common people - don't f*k around with your system with any programs (Updaters/Tweakers/Optimizers/Cleaners/Slimmers and on) unless you know enough about what does the program do and why it will be useful and what can go wrong and how to fix it when it goes wrong. When I'm using such tools I do know what I'm doing, why and what is the risk. Most of people don't really know what the program is really doing so it is better to leave professional tasks to professionals. Even normal things like Windows updates can brick your PC, and tools from less known companies(like that driver updater/"optimizer") will with a high chance do a mess. Remember, default settings are maybe not the most optimal for your PC(as Microsoft cannot fine-tune for each PC) but they are *optimal enough* not to be touched by most people.

i have some old hp thins i installed XP on to play old games the so i could not get drivers for them from hp. I used Snappy driver installer to get the drivers since it has like 20Gb of driver on it and the pc does not hit the net so not worried about it that is the only time i can think one of them as been worth using.

I'll partly agree. Some drivers that do need to updated are graphics cards such as NVIDIA or AMD. But thankfully You can get drivers from their specific webpages or with their own apps like geforce experience, not a 3rd party updater. Sometimes older hard to get drivers are not found via windows update. I have no choice but to use something reputable.

For me driver updater (driver booster) broke touchscreen and audio for obscure windows tablet (brand refused and won't ever provide drivers), and sneaky driver booster despite allowing to know "yes there will be a driver backup made" they actually didn't make one because "you're not paying user lol!" I still have that windows 8 tablet... Windows atom... Very dirt cheap, it's somewhat usable, just need to force over bootia32 EFI for 64bit Linux releases.. (also from what I've seen desktop environment works fine with touch... Until you want to use it in horizontal mode, then you'll have issues...)

If you have more then two ram slots after BIOS update. You remove slot 1 and 3 (A1-B1), Or just A1, If only 2. Then set back the rams you removed.

I have a 2012 'phone, and tried to get newer drivers for Win 10, and also the software to copy all my data etc onto my PC. But the manufacturer's website only went up to Windows 8, but as I had used Google, there was another site that claimed to have the updated drivers. But when it ran, it identified all sorts of drivers that "needed updating", but not the ones for my 'phone for Windows 10. So I disconnected from the net, closed the program and removed it through Control Panel. A lucky thing, it seems! This was just a couple of days ago! {:o:O:}

That's how a lot of these get installed. Fake "driver update" websites that claim to have drivers you need. By the way, Windows 8 drivers work on Windows 10 and 11 with about 98% certainty. You could just try the 8 driver.

But I ran it as Administrator! I assumed it just wouldn't work with Win 10 and Win 10 knew that? I'll try and get the actual drivers from Samsung. Cheers! {:o:O:}

For lesser known drivers, Device Manager works well. For specialized drivers like GPU, use official client provided by AMD/Nvidia. That is all wisdom there is, I guess

In general...if the driver's there and working, leave it. If it's not there or not working, go to your OEM's driver downloads for your model and get those. Failing that, go to official manufacturer sites like NVIDIA/AMD/Intel/Realtek on your own. If that doesn't work, you're entering the dark arts anyway.

Should make a PSA about the horrors of registry cleaners too. I've never seen any measurable performance gain from running registry cleaners, but I have seen it brick systems.

Yeah, the problem with registry optimization is that the Windows registry is already set up pretty optimally. Even the largest hives tend to be under 200MB and traversing a registry path isn't a very complex operation. There are usually one or two blocks loaded per path component and the values are very small pieces of data. It isn't very susceptible to internal fragmentation either.

Windows Update will update some drivers but it's generally pretty conservative about it. Driver updaters see similar PCI IDs and newer date and go THIS WORKS FINE

I have to disagree with you... Yesterday i was driving behind this prius, and they were driving a lot slower than they needed to slowing down traffic. Lots of frustrated drivers passed this car and i eventually was able to over take them... Then all of a sudden I thought to myself, "i wish i could have updated that driver"... Sometimes driver updaters can be useful. While it's generally not a good idea to blindly install every single driver update found (unless you're using the update tool preinstalled by your PC manufacturer), as a PC tech, I do often find them useful for installing missing drivers and replacing generic drivers with the proper OEM ones. You can disagree with me if you want, but I stand by my comment. Of course you can manually download and install drivers. But I find it much more convenient to use software to do that for me.

There are two major differences here: 1. You're a PC technician. You (supposedly) know what you are doing. 2. You're almost certainly not using one of these "consumer" driver updaters and instead are using something like Snappy which I've covered repeatedly in the comments already. Even then, you still should be manually picking and installing drivers and drivers do not need to be (and should not be) updated outside of exceptional circumstances.

@@JodyBruchon 1. I do know what I'm doing. 2. I use a few consumer driver updaters. I don't use Snappy Driver Installer as it's driver matching could be better. There are four driver updaters which prioritise providing driver updates provided by the PC manufacturer, rather than OEM drivers and SDI isn't one of them. I have used it though, as I've tested every driver updater ever published. Yes, I don't blindly install every driver. I mainly install drivers for devices that have no driver installed, or only have a generic driver installed.

Windows Update is thankfully quite conservative about what driver updates they'll push out. These third-party tools are far too aggressive; they see a similar device string and go WELP THAT MUST BE A MATCH.

@@JodyBruchon I agree, these utilities can be very useful for us techicians though and I carry Snappy Driver Installer with me on my USB stick full of tools. It can get 90% of the drivers correct on a system, and if your knowledgable about drivers you know exactly which ones are useful and safe to install and which ones you'd rather want from the manufacturer. It saves me hunting for drivers on most systems, but for the super vendor specific stuff or things that commonly break on different vendors I simply choose to leave them out. Its especially useful to have those driver packs around for network cards, so you can easily get wifi or LAN up and running and leave everything else on the system up to Windows Update, and then only supplementing it with what is missing. But it does require skill, and the average user clicking on install everything is going to massively screw it up.

Those are generally okay, but they're also generally written by people who understand that you can't just look at driver strings and go "this is fine!" I'm specifically targeting "driver updater" tools that sit around and replace your existing working drivers with new ones, often with a lot less care. I wrote my own driver finder and I've discovered that a ton of driver INF writers don't author exclusions like they should, so an INF that will install a guaranteed crashing driver on 10 but not on 7 will not limit itself to NTamd64.6.1 like it's supposed to.

For example I have a synaptics touchpad driver in the pack that would happily install on any ps/2 port. It will still work, but having a full on touchpad handling driver handle your ps/2 mouse is a bit silly.

Driver packs/updaters do have a use if you're setting up/re-imaging a PC in a position where you have no internet access to rely on Windows Update/manual downloads. But I def don't recommend uninformed end users go DL'ing and running stuff like this trying to "optimize their PC" .. a lot of the "fix/optimize your PC" software out there are scams; many of them actually slow down your PC while telling you to DL even more bloatware to "fix issues", and some are outright malware.

@@irae9 Except WU is a lot safer about it. There is only one driver I've seen come down from WU and hose things: AMD GPUs in some early-mid 2010s systems and cards. The symptom is a "sticking" pointer and frozen screen updates at constant intervals of about every two seconds. The fix is using older AMD drivers meant for 7, but WU happily updates then to some 15.x version that does this chugging crap and makes using the computer intolerable or even impossible.

@@irae9 Older drivers are not picked up by WU. Especially notable for this are older Realtek HD Audio cards. They end up with the generic driver and then the headphone socket doesn't work. Older laptops almost always require a manufacturer-specific audio driver for that model to work 100%. You can install generic drivers from Realtek but the damn headphone socket won't work.

one of my friends has driver updater program because another friend told him its better to update drivers and because he cant find anything that will do, later while i saw that he uses it i saw that it updated him a bluetooth driver which he doesn't has on his pc.
