@John Doe Yes, I'm aware that youtube is google, and I use other video platforms, mostly. Though due to the fact that other video platforms don't have as much content as yt, I do still use yt, too, when searching for content. As the other sites grow, I'll be abandoning yt, to.
Yeah me too It wont even show what im looking for unless i just checkout the website itself only to find out that the site is showing more relevant shit than Google is
Thanks for the list! Privacy and tracking is important but what is really crucial is the search results themselves. Google filters the results in accordance with their very specific agenda, so the searches are not organic. This makes some of the options you presented that use Google to feed the search results fairly irrelevant. Google's ideology is far more disturbing than even the amount of data they collect on us. I'd like to see a list of the search engines who combat that problem. Cheers!
Agenda is pretty simple, whoever pays more. They used to actually have principles like clearly labelled ads and accuracy above paid promotion. They've gone to the dogs, I've given up hoping they'll get better.
@@SineN0mine3 Gone to the dogs ? ... half right ... they've gone to the Devil Dogs as in the DOGS of HELL because Google is just so damn EVIL and oddly enough , do you remember when THEIR saying used to be : DON'T BE EVIL ... what a JOKE Google has made of itself . Aside the privacy issue, we need to consider the censorship going on. Twenty years ago, I could easily access info and scientific research on controversial topics such as vaccination and alternative medicine. Now you only get the official version. It is almost impossible to find info which contradicts the mainstream medicine and science, so if we use an alternative search engine which is based on google, we are back to square one.
Yes, this is so true. We used to be able to find so much information on alternatives including many good blogs of people talking about these things. Now it's just the official stuff, nothing else.
I use DDG in FF with plenty of privacy addons making sure I read the man pages properly id say im pretty locked down whoer.net will acctually show you your privacy score and display what is visible when you access the site good to pinpoint and troubleshoot whats getting through 1 by 1 to eventually be locked down as you see fit another option have a VM running or boot live
@@kirschkern8260 You are defenently brain dead, obviously google searches will be always better because Google has profiled you and knows what you like. For example I program using Java, but Java is also an island. If I search Java on Google it will always show me tech related things, if I do the same on duckduckgo it will also show me planes to go to Java, that's not what I want
@@alessandroautiero5414 I would rather keep my privacy. Not hard even for us brain dead people to type in java and then click meanings and pick computer related only. It takes a half second. Much better to have Google involved in every aspect of our life. I think Voltaire said it best. *It is difficult to free fools from the chains they revere*
@@johnmal5975 you are the fool. Everything that you like, including your youtube home page, works that to machine learning and data science. Now this requires a lot of data and complex engineering to work. The more data you have, the better the algorithm will perform. Now obviously you can stop using Google services in the name of privacy, but what you loose is actually a trained system that works. Google Assistant is now miles ahead of Siri, you know why? Because Google registers your conversations with the assistant and supplies the results to algorithms to improve the service and actually make it better. Now if you ask me that is a good use of data
@@alessandroautiero5414 I will scratch my own butt. I do not need Google to do it for me. In all seriousness, I get your point however my privacy is more important than my convenience. You think its great to be predicatively programed because the science is neat. To each his own I guess.
I teach differential equations at the college level and students occasionally use wolfram alpha to evaluate integrals and solve differential equations. It's always easy to tell when they have done so and never receive credit for it. Point is that it's definitely much more than a search engine as DT says.
It makes sense to me why they would save search results. I'm sure a database of search results is invaluable to a search engine for optimizing and improving results. They can see what are the most searched topics and sites and the links most followed on those result pages. I'm sure there is a lot more value to them as well but I don't know enough about search engines to offer a more relevant reason.
Ecosia should be on this list as well! They use the money from searches towards reforestation projects. They also do not track you and respect your privacy.
I use Ecosia myself, the only downside of the engine is that the images tab can be wonky. Alotta times not useful when you need to find a good image, but very helpful when you need a laugh because you find the most obscure stuff on there lol.
@@gl3nda96 I have the same question, I couldnt find much information about them, but they pull their results from Bing and none of their software is open source
It's not just privacy. Google isn't an organic search engine, either. Meaning, that your search results aren't related to your query, The results are related to their own agenda.
@@kowsalya.g8493 Google Chrome and the google search engine are 2 different things and if u are asking if using Google Chrome is bad then no it isn't bad but it apparently uses a lot of your ram so switching to another web browser is probably a good idea.
I never minded Google's tracking so much. I felt the value of their searches was worth the intrusion. However, Google's search results seemed to become too self-serving with ads, etc. So I finally felt I had to switch to DDG.
Even on Brave / with adblock? My default is DDG, and use Google whenever I can't think of the most accurate search term. Still only use Google about 10% of the time, but credit where it's due; their spy-and-refine algorithms.
His list: 1) DuckDuckGo 2) Startpage 3) Qwant 4) WolframAlpha 5) Swisscows 6) MetaGer 7) Mojeek 8) Gibiru 9) YaCy Of these, I think only MoJeek & YaCy provide their own results. Maybe Qwant & Swisscows do too. I never really considered WolframAlpha a search engine. He missed Giagblast, which also provides its own results & has a privacy-focus. Other search engines which still provide their own results include Exalead & NorthernLight, but I'm not sure what their stance is on privacy. (I'm more interested in unique results than privacy.) And we can't forget that web directories still exist, like Curlie or Best of the Web.
Have you manage to find any new search engines that have their own results.I'm interested in finding censored information and information that is hidden from the general public
I keep trying to switch to DuckDuckGo and Qwant, but the search results are always worse, so I go back. I hate it, but there is no good alternative to Google with results that are just as good.
@Rahmi Acar I do that, but google often gives more results. I know it causes a bias towards what I want to see, but google just has more sites in its index.
I don't want google to repspect my privacy i just want the damn results I'm searching for. It's literally easier to ask random strangers where to find a good link.
Also "Wouldn't you prefer to use a search engine that respects your privacy". Google does respect your privacy insofar as they tell you what information they will take and what they will use it for. "google doesn't respect your security" Google is vastly more trustworthy for having effective secure storage of your data than some small underfunded or volunteer search engine.
@@joestevenson5568 I always use a pre paid Master Card with I do business on line.. nothing connected to my bank account when I get things from Amazon, Walmart Deliveries,

Google, Facebook, Microsoft and Apple (just off the top of my head) they all track everything you do online there's very little privacy online, and those 4 giant tech companies are biggest problem when it comes to negotiate privacy.
Yes. I have notice some using the FB and Twitter icons on the bottom of the page. If they do I won't use them. If I DO NOT trust anything that FB owns why would I use an affiliate search engine?
The only problem with other search engines is they do not have something similar to google maps. Sometimes you need to find out if a place is open and how to go there for exemple
Really love this list! I've been using DDG for quite some time and I really like their service, but I'm going to give Mojeek a try because I like the idea of them having their own database. One runner up that I think is worth mentioning is "Private.sh". From what I can tell, Private.sh actually encrypts your search locally on your computer before sending it, and then encrypts it when it sends it back. I think it uses the "Gigablast" search engine database, meaning that it doesn't use the other Big Tech indexes like Google, Yahoo, or Bing.
Thanks for you info. As of today I believe DuckDuckGo has finally been compromised!!! Probably silently bought out or 'made an offer they couldn't refuse' by Google. I just did a search for " Doctor speaking out against Covid 19 " Try the same search for yourself right now. Not only did none of the doctors I was looking for come up but there were very few 'video' results?!! This has become VERY CONCERNING to say the least! Yeah, the 2 doctors that were removed from YT were there but remember they still promoted 💉.
@@hughjoelcaulk7244 I don't actually agree that your test lends itself to your conclusion. What you would need to do is to upload the video somewhere (like LBRY), ensure that all the right tags are used, and make sure that it has been indexed by Bing and DDG, and then do a search. At that point, if it didn't come up, that would then prove the point. But, a lot of this depends on how people index the content they upload and whether or no host sites are taking the content down. YT took down those videos that you referred to, which means they don't exist for DDG to even find. I'm not sure if LBRY is indexed by DDG or not. You might try going to LBRY and searching there. I bet someone has put it up on their platform.

I think a big part of the problem is that everyone who makes websites include analytics code in their sites which reports back to google and gives them a direct advantage in search results.
Great informative and educational video! I did not know of the search engines other than the most popular. Keep up the great videos that make your channel a go-to source for all things open source.
Also stop using FB, Twitter and other "social" media. Your data is currency. Use the domain's Autonomous System Number (ASN) to look up the IP ranges and block them with iptables. You can use a script to automate all this.
Thank you so much for this list of alternative search engines. I knew only a few of them. Today I've added all to my firefox. Over the next months I'l see which one is the best for me. Maybe it turns out that 'll have a favourite one for each purpose/topic. Best regards from Dortmund/Germany
I've been thinking about using another search engine from time to time, but I always end up thinking that I might as well use Google since I'm already using RU-vid, Gmail and Googles cloud storage (where I'm most likely already tracked). Sure I can stop using Gmail and get another cloud storage provider, but there's not really a good alternative (contentwise) when it comes to RU-vid.
This is my Dilemma as well. I use RU-vid ,gmail and google cloud storage for photos/contacts basically to back up my entire iPhone. I still don’t like being tracked when searching things, I’ve been trying out safari/duck duck go and I also have Tor+vpn app downloaded on my iPhone. I like tor it’s just a little slower then safari/ddg though. I did notice DDG Isn’t as fast as google either. But as so long as it’s not too slow I’m willing to compromise. I wonder what options ppl like us have that use googles other services.
When it involves actual, real life children then having no adult content sounds fantastic; I would use a browser like that if I had small children set on the child's school laptop or such, adult content are for adults for a reason.
@@jdharrison01 even though I like to use things like Gentoo for desktop, I would want my phone to just work. Also phone calls rarely work on pinephone. I think kaios is a cool project though
I like the Google Chrome package which extends beyond the search engine and across platforms to allow someone with a computer, notebook and cell phone call to all share a variety of information equally between the different computing devices such as favorite sites, services,, email, etc.
I've tried using other search engines, browsers etc other than Google's, but I always go back to Google's. I don't know, it just feels better. Other than that, trying to avoid Google (or any similar company) isn't gonna solve anything. What we need is things to become more transparent and to work for the people, not money. Sadly though I don't think that will come any time soon, but we have to fight nonetheless.
I've started using duckduckgo a while ago. The search results in English were serviceable, but in Hebrew, my native language, the results were abysmal. So i've returned to Google.
Changingyour Firefox User profile every once in a while is also good practice. I recomend if your on Linux to SELinux Sandbox 1 session for private use, and 1 regular session for general use
Guys, I have a serious question. What are you looking for that Google should not know about? What's wrong with targeted advertising? If most often you are looking for how to configure i3wm or something like that , what's super private in this? Are you afraid that Google will offer a paid version of Arch? Explain to me
I use and love DuckDuckGo, they even have a tor search. I think they do a good job balancing privacy and profitability. What I want to know is -- which one is most open source?
I’m using google for work related searches in a separate FF profile, for everything else it’s DDG. Honestly I hardly ever search for personal reasons anyway.
Finally someone talking about what i am talking for years. I am using internet since 2004. Everything was great till 2011~2012 Google started to filter results. Then date search, face search , exact image search without limit, hundreds of image results gone! Weirdly my 6 years old watched videos history is deleted. Thankfully i got backup six months ago before the shit happen. Nobody talked for years about this and thank you for talking about this. What i am the most sad about this thing is i started use Google as my main thing since 2009 August. All my search history, bookmarks, everything is on there. I wish to rip them off to somewhere which i am planning to switch on one of those. Still i need to test these with my some test websites that Google trying to filter them. Thanks again. By the way my main reason is i am doing a lot of researchs about health, technology and history, sensetive subjects. Obviously all of them filtered since 2012... Also Google really reached to the point that i can feel i am in tracking system since 2016. It is more like level system and they took my 2nd level to track cuz some things happened that i can't talk here.
Update!! I tested them all, even Google, Yahoo, Bing, Yandex. Of course it's Turkish but still worldwide search. First of all, all of them are bullshit on image search except Google Images. Google Images the only one that knows what i want. But i must warn you. Images from movies are removed. You can find a lot of images from movie at Yandex Image Search and it helped me to find some movies really. On the web, i searched very very rare tv series was published on televisions on 2000s. Also Google knew what i was searching. Startpage and Gibiru also knew what i was talking about. The name of tv series is unfortunately same as one movie which translated name to Turkish by televsions so i got mixed up results on the other search engines. Duckduckgo and Yacy are the most bad ones. They almost didn't found anything or nothing! Maybe i needed some settings to Yacy for getting more results but it is %99 bad. It isn't worlwide. I did lots of search with all of them. In one search about aloe vera (won't tell here cuz you won't believe what it was about) *Swisscows* and *Gibiru* are the best ones right now, they both found what i was looking for.. It was old news from 2009 and somehow swisscows forgot the highlight aloe vera word on the information part. Other than that it was okay cuz only these both sites found the what i was looking for. For images, like i said Google is the best one. Sometimes i am searching old or new deleted RU-vid links for trying to learn what was the video name. Only Bing and Yahoo are good at finding deleted webpages like RU-vid video links, also they both good at showing you some forum pages if it is shared on there. If the video is deleted a little long time ago, the cache view of the page getting deleted by new info from RU-vid and it causes show it like "RU-vid - Home Page" and at information part it says same general information that you can see same info of "youtube.com". It's because deleted video link shows "Video is deleted" for 5 secs then redirecting you to youtube.com home page. I tried this video's URL on swisscows and gibiru but gibiru never ever finds results it is deleted or not by searching youtube URL. I also tested Gibiru's uncensored search and i found something there. In PDF there was a youtube video link about health and only Google found 2 pages results that what i was looking for.. Like i sad Gibiru decline youtube link searchs so even if there is result i can't see due of this problem... All of them failed except Google. Bing and Yahoo gave me random RU-vid videos which they both same... It's more like they are boost up video links by uploaders. Very stupid videos. Anyway, i will continue using Google. But *if i want searching something a little bit deep, some serious health or sensetive infos* . I will use *Bing, Yahoo, Swisscows and Gibiru* . By the way Gibiru gave me old vibe of Google. It is really REALLY looking into page's inside and giving you right results without touching them like the before 2011-2012 Google which after that, it started to touch on 2011-2012. Swisscows is better it's because it can find RU-vid links by making RU-vid URL search.
8:24 MetaGer is a good search engine,BUT only thing most peoples don't like is that you can't open image because when you want to open image the search engine directly open the web page and I repeat most peoples don't like this
Tried ddg and Bing. Didn't work out. A Google search is way better. I just can't stop using it. I've set up my Google account and services just the way I like years ago. There are plenty of companies talking our info and making money of it. Google is the least of my problems.
i've switched to duckduckgo a few months ago. however recently i discovered that it has problems with some search queries, especially with lots of keywords, which often happens when trying to find programming related infos, at least for me. it would then show kind of unrelated results and sometimes even omit the best ones. so i had to use google for those, and now i'm always thinking.. did i get the right or best results with duckduck?
4:55 social bubbling is a thing with `reccomended results`. Like flat earthers will be flat forever because they only see videos and articles that shows reason why earth is flat, and don't see why earth isn't flat!
I really like Duckduckgo, but I can never find stuff. I actually like the customization of Google using your previous searches and stuff, it makes stuff super easy to find. Too bad it's at the cost of privacy.
I use a VIP I connect with Tor Browser that uses Duck Duck GO found videos on line like Simon and Simon and Knots Landing that I never found on other search engines from sites that is legal
Thanks for this video gonna try some of these out! I had never really thought of wolfram alpha as a search engine. I use ddg mainly but google scholar and patents are both tough to replace.
Impressive list. saved for testing. duckduckgo lands the deadly 8 miles from the bridge rather often. Google lands close to the target most of the time.
I don't worry about privacy too much as I have nothing really to hide and does have advantages like being synced across multiple devices and such. But I also understand why people don't want to be tracked. Turning on privacy mode helps with some of that but they still know your IP address and such. I don't trust VPN"s, even the paid one's, because I can't believe they can make money simply off a few bucks a month so they have to be selling your data, passwords, and such. Anyhow, good professional video and does gives alternatives to those who wish them. Thanks.
I love start.ramco.org as my startpage for that reason. When you type, the search starts. Normal search is via Ecosia and ! are sent to DuckDuckGo...once you are used to open a window and just type it's super super handy and I wouldn't want to miss it anymore.
Yacy is an extremely useful tool. As an IT Tech for a school district I crawled all of sites for the district, relevant social media, and the town...as a result, before I go out on a ticket I know exactly whom I am talking to and the issues I'll be facing. Also crawled alteratives.net and now get instant and accurate results for software solutions. There's countless applications for Yacy and you can search locally as I described or via the peer to peer network. I just set it as my home page button and use it as a resource-I implore you to check it out and help build a proper decentralized global search engine.
Wonderful, sounds exactly as I hoped it would work... Now I have to attempt to fix my health issues so I can finally start setting up a nice box I purchased to play with. And Yacy sounds exactly like one of the tools that should be on it. Do they allow for p2p metadata exchange from trusted nodes? I mean that could help building a serious alternative pretty fast as long as a set of strict guidelines for everyone exchanging the data is followed.
DDG uses bing in the backend. Startpage uses Google in the backend it will give you better search results than DDG, however it is owned by a pr agency, so they are not really interested in privacy they use it as market study.
I think people are obsessed with privacy too much. And whenever i said this they use the most extreme nonlikely counter argument. I use Google search because of the fact that the search is much better compared to other search engine.
One thing to note about about DuckDuckGo is that they have a proprietary deepweb service. To the best of my knowledge, DuckDuckGo has never mentioned this service or what it's for. There's rumors that it may have to do with how DuckDuckGo anonymizes advertisement data. Still though, imho, that's something to keep in mind.
As an everyday user I find any other search result insufficient! Sorry but I've tried duck duck go for 1 month and many times I had to go back in Google in order to find what I was looking for. Especially for content relevant to my country...
If DDG uses Yahoo then we have a problem because Yahoo has been using Bing for a few years now. EDIT. Wolfram Alpha hasn't been around forever... it was launched in 2009. DT, how old are you?
I don't really understand the concept of privacy in the internet. In the end all what companies want is to give you better ads and stuff like that (which in my opinion is a good thing). So why should you care about it that much about it? I think most people just do it because they get told to do it, and never really think about why.
HAd it with Google over the past couple of months searching for holiday gifts.. I looked at the Patriot's Solar Power Bank to charge devices, Solar Cooker, and Over the Air Antenna items. I will buy me one of these items and buy another one for other family members. I'm into prepping and encourage other family members to be as well. Some of them have even grown to like what I get them, Google then tries to advertise like crazy, Even You Tube here lately all the advertisement been about VPN companies
Since i switched to linux i used ddg, and for "normal" stuff it works fine. But when looking for something more specific, google search on my phone gives better results.

People complain about google but google also offers great services for free. Of course there are options but can people be certain that those are safer, not really. Often volume also gives safety, it's easier to hide in a large group of people than small.
