Sometimes i do chords with the left hand especially if I'm playing melodies with the right, or 1 + 5, or 1+5+1. I always tend to play the chord in the left if im going to hit 7th chord (for example) in the right hand.

I love the 3+1+2 especially. Sometimes I add an upper 5 because my hand can go that far. A slur between the 1 and the 2 makes it so interesting. Avoiding octaves on the left hand always makes the chords sound "Fuller".

In Good Will Hunting there's scene where Lambeau tells the story of Ramanujan. How with no education, he found a simple math book, and after some time with it, he began to do some of the most advance math proofs ever done. I've watched dozens of piano videos over the past decade, and I could never wrap my head around the two hand connection. So my head could only understand memorizing some right hand chords and adding two root-based octaves below it. And because of that I always just felt frustrated like doing anything worth playing would be simply too high to ever reach. Like if you can't wrap your head around standing, you may never even try to get good at crawling because standing might as well be magic. But the cheat sheet you have given in the first half of this video... it blew my mind and I can wrap my head around it. And it makes standing not seem like magic. I feel like I could keep coming back to this video at multiple stages of improvement and still have my mind opened further. Obviously I've subbed and I'll watch other videos. But that I can say that about this single video says a lot. Thank you so much for this!

Sean! Does this explain how some piano players get that bottom sound Without going down to the lower octaves and playing bass notes? I hear sometimes when musicians are playing, they have more of a full sound and they’re not mimicking their right hand nor are they playing just the bass note. I’m sure you’ve played that way before. Can you explain this theory?

Good one Sean! A question though... Which method do you recommend for a one man band like me who plays for the entire worship team and church... I prefer octaves coz they give a consistent bass note for the singer and drummer as well... Pls what do you think?
@SeanWilsonPiano
@SeanWilsonPiano 3 года назад
Im a one-man band at one of my churches, it's preferable to do a bass split on the keyboard then, that'll give you bottoms, I'd avoid using octaves tho except to maybe end a song or to increase dramatic effect
