There was an article by Mark Menendez about removing most of the rattles (lead shot), from 3/4 oz traps to lessen the noise level and lighten the weight of the bait. I started to experiment with this to keep the bait higher up over submerged weedbeds in mid summer. I need to work more with this. Also might be able to remove some of them from ordinary crankbaits to make a more subtle presentation without going completely silent. just sayin... good vid!

Have you ever turned any of your rattling baits to silent ones??. Key thing is making sure you keep them in diving position when you fill them, then they will still b weighted correctly & run straight/ dive how they should. Learned that hard way. First one I did, I filled it sitting horizontal & it wouldn't ever run true after that.

Another great video Matt. Ive asked these 2 questions to You, Jonny, and Randy but here goes. I would love to see a video on when and when not to use rattles in jig and when and when not to use rattles in soft plastics. I'd be tickled pink to see a video on either. Good luck this week on Rayburn, hope you whack em.

Hey Matt, l have an off topic question l was hoping you could help me with... When it comes to blade baits... If the fish are holding 10 feet off the bottom, should l be stopping the bait at their level and ripping it up, or stop the bait below them and rip it up to their level? Thanks for taking the time to answer everyone's questions. The algorithms on RU-vid boost content that gets feedback so just hang in there.

I fish down south in stained water most of the time. I like the larger thumping rattles, the louder the better. I think the bait makes a different enough sound based on the conditions and the local environment and cover that the fish don’t make Pavlovian associations with bait sounds. In theory if they are caught over and over again on the same exact bait with the same sound I am sure it can happen, I just doubt that this happens very much “in the wild”. On a very very high pressure area you may very well be correct. Interesting topic!

I do better, overall, with silent baits. The lake I'm on is HEAVILY pressured and EVERYBODY is throwing loud baits. I'm really trying to find silent everything. From crankbaits, squarebills and topwater baits. Tough to find them in the local shops, but I try. Great video & good luck.

This was a good question, I actually prefer no rattle's most of the time! Unless really dirty water. I actually drill holes in most of my crank baits, shallow & deep & fill them with either foam or appoxy depending on what depth they dive. I tape them off first so I don't make a mess of them. Then pull tape off when I'm done & have silent crank baits of whatever brand & colors I want. I feel they have plenty of water displacement so I'm my exsperiance I feel I catch alot more fish on the baits I've turned silent.

Great video Matt as I grew up with silent floating Rapala and countdown lures over 30 plus years ago fishing on the shore and caught my biggest fish just on flash and wobble. Somehow I moved away to rattling cranks, etc but now looking to add a few more silent or one knock lures for beginning of the season. Thanks again for a good refresher for me and everyone watching.

To me rattle traps before I knew they were lipless crank baits and the back of my jigs that have two little rattle bars!!! But I have to say that during the evening hours from 3 o’clock afternoon till about 7 o’clock in the evening during the summer I have a chrome rattle trap that has a body of a skeleton bones of fish and I have a shed color one with a two tap tungsten and I’ve always had luck dark clear my only problem with the Clearwater certain colors I noticed my bites in lands become lower but I got football jigs and I got frogs that I put rattles in that I get bites on now but again That’s here in Maryland Northern Maryland pretty boy Lake, liberty Lake and Lock Raven lake

Good video, I love cranking but it's something I'm not real good at and don't have a ton of experience with. And there are so many different styles, sizes, actions, colors it's a little intimidating and confusing at times. It helps tremendously to have some basic, general ideas of which way to go based on the conditions you're facing. And I heard you did well today on Rayburn man- congrats. - glad to hear it. Still haven't heard what you brought in but, I did hear someone say you had a "solid" day- so I assume you did well.

Do you think "silent" make alot of noise with the hooks banging up against the bait or do you think being underwater diminishes that? Another well known pro was saying that there's truly no silent crankbaits because the hooks but my thoughts were that once its underwater that goes away. I guess I gonna have to get underwater and have my buddy whiz some crankbaits by my head. What could go wrong lol Anyway it seems like most of my favorite crankbaits have rattle not really by design but its just worked out that way.

Good video Matt! I tend to agree with you. I think if the fish can see the bait really well, no rattle is better and I'm not a fan of obnoxiously loud rattles either. I think fewer and bigger rattles is better. You get more of a thumping sound.

If in the summer, they are active, why do you need to trigger them harder? Does not make sense to me. Your channel has a lot of this kind of unfounded claims, fishing business has so much snake oil, most of these claims can be tested by some controlled trials, but no one does it, and no fishing gear companies sponsor research organizations to do these trials, why is it? Because they want to make Money, that is all. (not personal, no offense).

Bill Lewis kept his creation a secret for many years. To the ones who lack knowledge, they are built upon both the knocker and bb systems. That coupled with the silver sides has made them into a legend, and I have seen the uncanny results myself when all else fails. Am not a fan of them, but it is critical to understand and respect that power in the uniqueness. Note that the bigger models are crooked at head via the mold design so will likely run tilted. This example was only used to carry the point across.
