I put a piece of duck tape on the side of the sidewalk to keep the excess from running off at the bottom. But first, even after removing weeds, I spray it with salt & vinegar. Let dry, then caulk. Mine lasted 12 years, with a ten year caulk. Re-doing it this year.

As a kid I watched my father do something similar, he cleaned the crack and wedged a copper wire in the crack. When I asked him he said plants (weeds) won't grow near the copper.

Great video. A paint stirring stick, stuck into the dirt, makes a great dam and the end of your sidewalk joint to prevent the Sika product from dripping at the ends. Sika is my product of choice and I cover my joints with sand. Thanks!

I've done this on my driveway concrete joints with the sikaflex and sand and it works wonderfully. Protip, if you buy sand at Home Depot, make sure to check the color of the sand somehow. I've gotten brown sand and gray sand and I prefer the gray. Now I have weeds in between the road asphalt and my driveway border (what is that even called)? Sikaflex is too thick for that but the polymeric sand might work; only problem is that polymeric sand is expensive.

I was going to say the same thing. I noticed a few days ago I have some kind of grain from feeding the chickens that is growing in the sand. It's crazy because under the pavers are sheets on concrete backer board as a base.

Can you use the Polymeric Sand to fill in most of the hole (in place of backer rod) and then Sikaflex as the top layer? Would there be any advantage to this method?
@turkeytrac1
@turkeytrac1 3 месяца назад
The backer rod sika flex has literally more flexibility than sand alone. It allows for more expansion and contraction.

You can use any combination, but polymeric sand is used for joints between pavers and should work on joints between concrete cracks. So far mine has lasted a year and no signs of cracking or growth.

Can I do this method to fill small defects between my pathway pavers? They were installed a few years ago. I tried to power wash them last year but stopped when I noticed I was washing off the top layer of the polymeric sand between the pavers. I heard if you want to fill-in between your pavers again, all of the existing sand has to be removed and it has to be totally re-done. I only have a few little spots and wanted to use this method to touch up. Will it cause a problem later?

@FixThisHouse
@FixThisHouse 3 месяца назад
I have not tried this method yet. I’m assuming this will eventually crack over time and weeds can grow back inside those cracks.
@TheNudeBrewer
@TheNudeBrewer 3 месяца назад
You're missing the point. Those cracks are put in your sidewalks and driveways to allow for expansion and contraction. If you just pour concrete into the crack, you've defeated the purpose. That's what the sika/vulcum caulk does-- it fills that crack to prevent plant growth *but still allows for expansion and contraction* because it's flexible. So no, don't use concrete.
@Adam-zw1ck
@Adam-zw1ck 3 месяца назад
Definitely not the correct way to use polymeric sand fyi. You want to double up some tape for the ends of your joints when using a self leveling sealant also. Always read directions, everyone!

Sorry to rain on your parade, but weeds are inevitable and will always find a way to root on the ground. Fact of life. Make the area less attactive to weeds by filling with ground cover, or edging plants.

@stevebabiak6997 3 месяца назад
After using something to kill off what’s growing, there are rubber mulch mats / strips that come in a variety of sizes that you could use to cover that area. After that, you might still want to use a weed preventer like Preen on a regular basis.

Why? It’s a lipoma. Vet knew that. Your family member could have died for cosmetic reasons due to age and anesthesia. I have a 11.5 year old with a 10-12 year is life expectancy breed. Just like this with a massive lipoma. When you are at the end of your life expectancy and others are in charge of your medical care, I hope someone refrains from cosmetic surgery on you. Your ability to survive the surgery, anesthesia complications higher and road of recovery would be difficult.

Not sure what your response is in reference to as I haven’t finished watching this video. But if you are referring to having a fatty tumor removed from a pet-some (not all) do get so large they can impact the pet’s quality of life. Our older pup (who is no longer with us) had a small tumor on her chest that continued to grow for years. It got so large that it made it difficult for her to eat and lay down. She was an old dog but I wish we had had it removed when it was much smaller and she was a little younger. Perhaps she would have had a better end of life experience. She had others on her body but none got as large as the one on her chest; it was a good 8 inches in circumference or so and also ended up impacting how one of her front legs functioned-bowed it in. She was a medium sized, mixed terrier dog. We let her go when she was estimated to be 17-18.
