I am Persian, and my family always told me stories about the Assyrians of Orumieh and how Orumieh was always home to Assyrians, Arameans, and other similar ancient peoples. I was taught that for more than 2,000 years, the Assyrians provided their local armies in service of the Iranian Shahs and were steadfast in their love for various kings of Persia/Iran. My family also mentioned that Iranians in the west and north were always of some sort of Assyrian (or similar) heritage originally, and that they blended with various other cultures (Kurds, Azeris, Persians) to become Iranian (I later confirmed this via a genetic testing service, which showed I was 40% Assyrian!). I hope there always remains a community of Assyrians in their historical heartland of Orumieh. They are truly an incredible people.

That's wonderful information. Thank you for sharing. Yes, Assyrians thrived in Persian under the ruling of the Kingdoms, but unfortunately not so much in the recent decade.

@@MoneerCherie Yes, the unfortunate truth. A truth which is applicable to many Iranians from all new and ancient creeds and faiths. However, similar to my Assyrian-Iranian friends and compatriots, I will always love Iran. Somewhere in my heart, there’s a hope that I will be able to return one day, with some of my friends and family, to build a better future at home. Of course, just a dream for now given the ever-deteriorating circumstances.

if you ask the Persian what does Orumieh means they won’t know , because the name is Assyrian . Orumieh ( Our d’ mia ) in Assyrian language means عين الماء my grandparents are originally from Takka ardeshai from Urmi كل قرية في مدينة اورميا لها قديس اشوري كان الاكراد دائما يحاولون سطوا وسرقة قرى مدينة اورميا وبالاخص هذه القرية ولكنهم كانوا يخافون القديس مار سركيس لهذا كانوا يخافون الاقتراب منها لانهم كانوا يؤمنون بقوة القديس . تبقون عظماء يا اشوريين بتاريخكم الكنسي المتوارث عن ملوككم اجدادكم الاشوريين القدماء

Never forget that when we were in front of their church and one of the Assyrian who had a key did not give us the access in our mother land country! He said it is only for Christian people!!! I was in heart of San Peter and no one asked my religion ten years after that! Religion is not more than a label if you want to market it. Thankfully I am not from any religion except humanity

Sean, Please, I urge you to go through the history of Urmia and what our Assyrians faced through centuries in Urmia, and you would really appreciate whatever they tell you. Don't get upset, because what you encountered I would have encountered too,, but please try to study the history of the region again the Assyrian and how many bloodshed we faced.

The Assyrian community in Iran numbered approximately 200,000 prior to the Islamic Revolution of 1979.[3] In 1987, there were an estimated 50,000 Assyrians living in Tehran.[4] However, after the revolution many Assyrians left the country, primarily for the United States; the 1996 Iranian census counted only 32,000 Assyrians.
