Really appreciate your videos Joe. I just bought my first 78 records earlier this month (Jan '21), so videos like yours are invaluable to a beginner like myself. Thor Kristinsson

Thanks , Joe ! I have been collecting 78's for over 40 years . I have some in the albums that you showed , others , in boxes . I have lost some over the years because they weren't properly stored . Recently , I put most on a bookshelf as you said to do . I didn't know that there are paper sleeves available for purchase . I need to buy some new .

Spot on storage info! Love the modified shelves too! I've had my 78s in tomato boxes for years. Moved a couple times with them. They're extra thick, have lids, and fit 78s perfectly.

I store mine upright in thicker “disc-o-file” sleeves and in clear plastic containers so they can be moved easier. I organize chronologically and keep original sleeves with their records in clear plastic sleeves. I also keep my rarer records separate from the more common ones.

I quite appreciate this vid, having 400odd that I've yet to sort and catalogue, though now I probably will figure out a better storage other then packed in shallow foam boxes cause the milk-crates they came in were way too darn heavy let alone risky.

Oliver. I have never shipped 78s. They are strong but very brittle. Any jostling or motion will probably cause damage. Joe

I currently have mine shelved according to record label and number. I use Disc-O-File sleeves which may be a bit pricey but are high quality. I keep an inventory on my laptop of my 1500 or so 78s.
@josephdavila6798
@josephdavila6798 2 года назад
That seems fine to me. An inventory and some type of organization is essential for more than a hundred or so records.

The paper sleeves has a large hole, only a minority of 10" shellacs has a label like this.

How should 78s be stored ? Stacked flat or upright ?
@josephdavila6798
@josephdavila6798 2 года назад
All records should be stored upright in a moderate temperature environment.

Thanks for your video. What's your opinion about leaning 78s at an angle on shelves? I have a system a bit like yours, but I'm always worried the leaning at an angle will warp them - whereas filling a 'cube' all the way up with 78s prevents them from leaning, but makes them much harder to browse through. I'd be interested to know how you deal with that. Thanks!
@josephdavila6798
@josephdavila6798 Год назад
I agree that storing records for a long time at an angle will likely result in warping. It is best to store them close to vertical and in a constant temperature environment.

hi, why aren't the outer and inner plastic sleeves used like vinyl records?
@josephdavila6798
@josephdavila6798 2 года назад
Good question! I don’t know why plastic sleeves are not used for 78s. I have used plastic outer sleeves with paper inner sleeves occasionally. However I have never used a plastic inner sleeve for 78s although I guess that they must exist.

Why not use Ikea Kayla's shelves on their side so records are on solid plank? Which Mono cartridge do you have on your TT? What do you do with the original sleeves that you remove?
@josephdavila6798
@josephdavila6798 3 года назад
I am not familiar with the Kayla shelves, I will look at them. Any shelf that will hold the ver heavy 78s will be fine. I do not use a mono cartridge. My preamp allows me to mix the stereo channels into a single mono output. Most of the original sleeves that I have found are ratty and I throw those away. The sleeves that have graphics on them, and are in good shape I keep. I don’t know if they have any collectors value, but I keep them anyway.

Hi I just fixed an old gramophone which you call a victrola in North America, and I've started collecting 78s which I found out are the only records my gramophone plays. Most 78s I have don't have sleeves and so far I just have them in stacs. You said you replace all the the old sleeves. Do you keep the sleeves because a guy that I got some old Edison records from before I new what they were and that they needed a different type of reproducer gave me a big stack of newer 78s which he said we're one's without sleeves. So I thought ones with the original sleeves must have some sort of collectors value? I noticed your playing your 78s on a more modern electrical record player. Even though the acoustic gramophone is great for playing 78's and sounds great now I have plenty of new needles. I was thinking of possibly getting a modern record player that you don't need a new needle every time... maybe one that can play other types of old records like Edison Diamond Disks and Vynl LPs aswell. What's the best record player for 78's and are there any special considerations for playing 78's on a modern record player?
@robfriedrich2822
@robfriedrich2822 7 месяцев назад
The microgroove is 25 micrometer, stereo is 18 micrometer, 1950's shellacs 65 micrometer, shellacs from 1930 to 1949 are best played with 90 micrometer and a curve, that doesn't cut treble and has low shelf starting below 200 Hz. Acoustic recorded records runs pretty good with RIAA and 120 micrometer.
@robfriedrich2822

Not on a stack, they need to be stored vertically.

@josephdavila6798

I collect everything from the late 1800s to the present. However the records that I actively seek out are Texas blues and R&B artists from the 40s and 50s.

Yes. It was a mistake to think, they would need to be stored horizontally.

Came here for good info. At :33 we see a 78 NOT rotating at 78. Then you tell me 78s were ORIGINALLy sold in albums. THAT'S not true either....they were sold as SINGLES (one sided singles, and THAT is discounting cylinders. So, I stopped the video at the 2 minute mark. can't watch the rest....my brain is hurting.
@josephdavila6798
@josephdavila6798 3 года назад
Your comment about selling as single is right on point. That was a clip I intended to correct but didn’t. I will post a corrected version.

Records were so expensive, that albums were pure luxury. People use to have not many records.
@djhrecordhound4391

Wow, I got what he meant by those things; slow record is just this video's introduction visual, "album" is used in its proper context--"sold as albums"... Your off-the-ball comments about these things made my brain hurt.
