As storm Ali swept across the UK, winds at Newcastle Airport peaked at gusts of 45 knots making for a very interesting day filming.
Having arrived at 10am it was clear that the wind had really started to strengthen as the first few planes I filmed seemed to be dancing about on the approach.
Here is a complete list of the aircraft in this video from start to finish.

Ryanair B737 EI-DLI
Easyjet A320 G-EZRW
Bmi Regional E145 G-RJXK

They certainly do make it all the more interesting. One of the reasons I try and make the effort to film in such conditons if its safe to do so as it makes it more interesting to view.

Jonathan Winton One reason is I think airline pilots are simply not much more than bus drivers, as there is so much automation these days, but I really enjoy seeing their skills tested. If you get any chance to make more videos like this, please do!

Interesting they used stand 9 for Emirates, I thought stand 30 which is basically stand 9 but just allows better wingtip clearance on the right hand side of the aircraft and the wings on the left hand side go into stand 8. Maybe because of the HOP aircraft on stand 8 is why 9 was used instead of 30? Does the Emirates aircraft usually get towed in too, or was that due to the wind?
@JonathanWinton123
@JonathanWinton123 5 лет назад
Yeah its basially that, 30 is at a slightly different angle as you say for wingtip clearance. Not normally towed in no, it was just due to the wind yeah.
@sporksgaming2528
@sporksgaming2528 5 лет назад
In high wind procedures the emirates doesn’t go on stand 30, it gets towed and basically blocks off stands 10, 11 and 12. If you sit in Burger King at parks down the taxi way center line to shelter all the ground staff. When we cater it we still get battered with the wind mind you.
@sporksgaming2528

UK Coastal winds can be treacherous and the Newcastle runway is far from flat, an issue which should have been fixed decades ago.
@JonathanWinton123

First it was a Storm with winds up to 90mph (which doesnt happen every month here) and secondly a flat runway has no bearing on the conditions.

Why are they allowing these landings, on this runway in such conditions? What are they waiting for a complete flip.
@JonathanWinton123
@JonathanWinton123 5 лет назад
The winds are well within safe limits for landing. If it were more of a crosswind then it would be a different story. What people forget is these planes fly in winds of up to 250kts when at 37000ft+ so this is not really a big deal.

Ryanair at 29:45 carrying far too little speed, can't avoid the high sinknrate in the last 100 feet.isses the 1000-foot marks well short. Then he pulls up hard to slow his descent, which only serves to drive the mains into the tarmac even harder. A little more power would smooth that out. Better to be a bit fast and preserve the margin for error.
@JonathanWinton123
@JonathanWinton123 Год назад
That is true, the only downside with too much power can be the opposite effect, longer flare further down the tdz and an increased chance of buffetting. Still a good job done in the conditions.
@sydnick6696
@sydnick6696 5 лет назад
Looks like there are quite a few pilots with marginal flying skills flying large commercial aircraft. Hello Emirates ?? A little coordinated wing down and rudder would've softened many of those arrivals. Leave the sideways landings for the test pilots.
@khaosai
@khaosai 5 лет назад
The sideslip wing low is an option on the B777 but only up to speeds of 28 knots. De crab during the flare is probably most pilots preferred method where the objective is to touchdown with both main wheels simultaneously with the wings level.
@JonathanWinton123
@JonathanWinton123 5 лет назад

Wing down is xwind gust-limited in the 777 FOM. Easy to criticize when you aren't type rated on the aircraft...
@sydnick6696
@sydnick6696 5 лет назад
Harold. I don't think landing sideways is suggested. Even in the 777. Decrabbing in the flare is just good pilot technique, and yes; I do have a little knowledge on the subject.

Not allowing enough manual flying in many companies creates pilots unable to perform a good and correct crosswind landing. I see it nearly daily during sim checks and on the line. Many pilots can not perform a raw data approach anymore, because they are no longer allowed to ... Where the hell did the pitch-power tables go? The stick and rudder, seat of the pants flying? Gone in many companies. Such a shame.
