Well this week was interesting wasn't it with Storm Barra and all that? I got none of the things on my list done this week and weather added a few more things to it!

We are- a family of four,
Mum- Annie,
Dad-Bruce
Two children Elsie and Betsy
One dog - Doug
and we decided to trade our busy life as home and business owners to chase the dream we’ve harboured for 10years.
How did we get here
After years of saying one day, we finally realised that these opportunities don’t just land in your lap and if we seriously wanted to make a difference to the Earth then we were going to have to stop talking about it and do it!
We sold all our stuff, got rid of the mortgage, sold our camper conversion business and landed in a dream come true. After traveling in our van we settled here in the west of Ireland. A place that has always been special to us. Annie is half Irish and since we met 12 years ago and she took me to meet her family i fell in love with Ireland too.
Now we’ve made this dream a reality there is no stopping us! our plan is to work hard, meet new people and learn new skills that will guide us on our journey of permaculture and creating a way of life that sings to us. One where we aren’t bound to the banks, working every hour and outsourcing all of our needs. A simple way of life, with connection to ourselves, each other, the earth and our community.

You really need some 8” 90 degree galvanized flashings to go up those gables, screwed well into the roof sheets, then into the walls so the wind doesn’t get under the sheets

Its not worth the risk of going out in that sort of weather- even an airborne slate can do serious damage to your head etc... take it from someone whos lived in Outer Hebrides for thirty years- do not go out.... prep first... any disasters that happen just stay in and deal with it later.

I like it that you're going native there describing storm Barra as "a bit of wind" lol. 👍 Btw make it a priority to get a decent long reach ladder. I know of one too many who have had bad accidents using a digger bucket or similar to climb onto things. Not recommended. Stay safe and be safe.
@OffGridBruce
@OffGridBruce 2 года назад
haha! most of the time we don't feel the wind too badly thanks to the trees but there was no avoiding that one. I do have a ladder i just find i feel a bit more secure in the bucket if I'm manhandling things like sheets etc. I am aware that its not really the right way to do it and probs giving annie a heart attack. Would be nice to have some scaffolding i reckon.

That storm blew so hard it blows down the chimney into the rayburn and causes very low fire efficiency. If the wind comes from a different direction it's a completely different scenario ...working with nature lol...

Please wear goggles when grinding steel. It's a very unpleasant experience to have steel dug out of your eye at hospital. But i'm not your nanny Bruce. Storm damage to both my polytunnels in the south-west. One had an 8x6 feet tear. It was already in a state by many years of Atlantic gales. Taped it up for now and i hope it lasts until spring when i hope to get a couple of bodies to help me re-cover it.

Just binged watched your cottage playlist. You're living your dream of a cottage with land and I'm living mine in my narrowboat. Can I suggest you list your tools in the description, with model numbers. I need a good chainsaw, what model is that one? Deals with logs effortlessly. Finally, if you set up affiliate marketing and link all your equipment and tools, you will earn a small but very relevant income stream. Regards,, Mark

As handy as that front loader is on the tractor you should not trust it in any way. Hydronic hoses do bust as any digger driver will know and when they do booms loaders etc all fall very quickly. And with some force. Breaking a leg or worse is not worth it. Some second hand scaffold is a wide investment for us all
