KLM B777 approach rather rough plane rolls from left to right. just before the runway hit a dangerous roll to the right.
Summer storm in the Netherlands. Schiphol had many problems with processing all in and outbound flights.

I am a pilot and this is a normal maneuver at this altitude in cross wind conditions. The aircraft's fuselage needs to be aligned with the runway, for which the pilot uses the rudder pedals. This presents a problem: the wind will blow the plane to the side. The pilot uses the ailerons to prevent this from happening, in essence to control the aircraft laterally by rolling. And because conditions were gusty, and the pilot needs to make lots of corrections, the aircraft seems to move violently. But it is actually all done in a purposefully and controlled manner, simply readying the aircraft for landing and reacting to the gusty wind. If things would have been too dangerous, the pilot would have aborted the landing attempt, which can be done even until after the aircraft has touched the runway. He didn't and landed in total control. A specialist at work.

Thank you for this explanation. I was on this flight and he actually aborted the first landing attempt. What I appreciated most was the pilot communicated with us and was very transparent about what he was doing which helped if not to relax us to keep us informed.

I was on this plane, coming from KIX. We did a go-around once before this, so maybe we were low on fuel. I was expecting to be in Brussels or Dusseldorf that night, and was a bit surprised at the second attempt to land. Lots of people were puking around me, and when I got off, the chief purser was as white as a ghost. It was a pretty scary ride; I thought we might have had a wing strike at that last point. The wind broke windows in the airport that day. Altogether a pretty unpleasant experience.

17splinter Some context: they had fuel left, a bit below 30 minutes when actually landing. Next to that they did need priority though, as the situation was getting increasingly dire for them. Source: Dutch media (and I'm Dutch myself ^^)

CrippleX89 EHAM is by far the biggest airport in the Netherlands (six runways, so usually plenty of options). Other airports have fewer runways and coped with this storm as well. So actually, I believe it was the right decision not to divert to another airport.

CrippleX89 Sure, because you were there - you know what the air traffic was like, the weather across the spectrum - I suppose you also knew how much fuel was left in the plane as well. This is a routine landing in some moderate chop - don't assume to know more than the Pilots.

Janjaap Poldervaart Die windvlaag vlak voor de landing was nog het meest verraderlijk. Alles daarvoor is nog perfect veilig. Een go-around is zo ingezet (gegeven dat er genoeg brandstof aan boord is natuurlijk). Zeer indrukwekkend video in ieder geval. Prachtig staaltje vliegkunst en techniek.

***** они не раскачивали а скольжением теряли высоту и раскручивали то одно колесо то второе. как бы на ощупь щупали. я тоже так садился. посадка мягче получается нет удара колёс о полосу и писка, износа шин. на полосах вы видите сколько следов от резины остаётся при раскрутке. непонятно почему колёса не расскручивают в воздухе ветрянкой и резиной чиркают по полосе.

***** посмотрел ещё раз. нормально посадили. скольжением в лево в право убирали лишнюю высоту с высокой глисады и повышеной скорости и чтоб не уйти с направления и не сесть с перелётом. так как скорость была повышеная а не нормальная посадочная.
