To much trouble getting your garbage can into the garage, bringing the grill in , and relocating all the loose stuff in the yard . Much more fun to watch them all fly away.
I don't think it was a matter of it being 'more fun' to watch them all fly away but more of a case that we had maybe 10 minutes warning if we were lucky. I had about 5 but only because my husband called me - I had been asleep. Also, since this storm occurred on a Monday, the majority of people were at work so, as far as they knew, it was a bad storm. My brother was on a conference call at home when his BOSS told him to hang up and take cover. So please shelve the sarcasm.
@@karenpolansky9097 nope - a tornado is NOT 'just wind' . A Tornado is a storm with cyclonic activity or rotation. This very obvious meteorological activity is indicated on radar pretty easily and gives the NWS a chance to give early warning for people to seek shelter/safety. This was only identified as a 'severe thunderstorm' with the ability to produce hail, heavy rain, and strong winds. NEVER did the NWS give any indication it could be anything more devastating.
Deena Nelson sure had plenty of time to pick up the phone or camera and start talking , that’s for sure. No sarcasm intended. Serious stuff a grill pointed at your neighbors front window doing 100 MPH!
Thanks for letting us know where this was filmed at - It is so interesting to compare videos from different geographical locations....What hit Marshalltown vs Cedar Rapids vs Illinois...
This is what a hurricane is like but lasts much much longer. I can't believe you guys left all the yard furniture, garbage cans and grills out. Forecasted 100 mph winds makes that stuff become missiles.
Unlike a hurricane, these suckers form up and hit peak violence unnervingly quickly. Folks in Iowa had bare minutes of warning before it was on them, not days or weeks.
Yet they had 13 minutes to film the wind lol... I would have at least run out there and grabbed the garbage...and pulled the grill under the awning. Jes' sayin'
There was no time to grab and secure things, you go outside once the wind starts blowing and trees swaying. Bet you sing a different tune. It was mid afternoon as well. I stand at my front door just holding it shut making sure it didn't fly open. I'm in the town where they said estimated winds were 140mph.
Either 1. Lack of a better place to put them and/or anchor them. But most likely 2. Maybe because this was a derecho that just decided to pop right in. In the morning, it appeared to just be a squall that would die off. Just a Marginal severe threat with an attendant Slight risk for a MCV in Northern Wisconsin. The Moderate Risk was not declared until it's rapid intensification was already well underway.

you prolly dont care but if you're bored like me during the covid times you can watch all the new movies and series on instaflixxer. Been streaming with my brother for the last few days :)
Nasty stuff, glad everyone was safe. (Although bit sure as in NZ). It must be extremely traumatizing to get this with no more than 5-10 minutes. Have you seen the one with the young man who went into his work to pick up some tape and pretty much survived due to an internal bathroom?

"It's just wind" Welcome to hurricanes Justin, winds are DEADLY... The scariest thing for us now, global temperatures are causing Derecho, you never know when it will hit like a hurricane as you have days to prepare....be safe.
Did any of you think he might have said it’s just wind because his family was scared he did also say go to the basement. Do u yell to your children there’s 110 mile an hour wind. Ur gonna Die? I think not
Tell your kids the truth. They need to learn how dangerous storms can be. Dont mollycoddle them. You dont need to tell your kids "Ur gonna die". But they need to know.
3:14, 9:59 siren activation, 6:14, 12:58 deactivation. Did they have them go off before it hit? We had about 10-15 mins lead time with our sirens, and they kept going off with nearly no cool-down time, very unusual.
Lightning getting more intense at the back of the storm. Seems like it picked up steam when it got to Newton and didn’t had power for 5 days after storm.
Thanks, great video. Looks like any neighborhood around the twin cities. Sadly under-reported, guess it wasn't on the east or west coast or in a handful of bigger cities. Best wishes to the hearty citizens of Iowa as they pick up the tattered pieces. Hopefully, you are getting all the help you need.
And that was just 100 ml an hr winds for a short period down here in Florida that goes on for hrs with a Hurricane topping close to 150 it’s quit frightening with tornados and water spouts
We had 148 mph winds in Cedar Rapids Iowa with only a hour or 2 warnings with hurricanes you get days warning plus iowa building codes are not the same in Iowa compared to where hurricanes and tornadoes are etc.
Just imagine a category 4 hurricane coming with only a few hours or mins to take cover and prepare for a Oh shit land hurricane super derecho and 148 mph winds for a hr and not know where to go and hide and cant prepare your house or stuff.
Both are very destructive but I would like to have more time like in hurricanes to prepare.

Jason France - hurricanes are classified by the speed of the sustained winds and not the wind gusts. The sustained winds in Cedar Rapids were 80 with gusts of 130+. I’m not trying to minimize what you guys experienced with no warning at all but that was equivalent to a cat 1 hurricane. A cat 4 twists iron I-beams and sends metal objects down the street with such speed and force that the friction leaves streams of sparks. To see the difference, watch a video of hurricane Laura. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TEAp85tMdAM.html
Did they say it was going to be a tornado or just gusts of wind? Or if the sirens go off - it could mean anything? Just curious - if the sirens go off indicating a tornado then I would understand why no one bothered to get anything other than running to the basement.
I mean sure stand and video while your grill, table and chairs turn into missies to hit other people’s home. Amazing how much people leave outside when they know high winds are coming. He saw the grill almost fly of the deck but just kept filming. How about stop and pull it into the house.🤨
I don't know why people don't tie things down or move somewhere safe, they know it's coming!!! Loose items become projectiles not only for you but for your neighbours. 🇦🇺
What a derecho in Iowa MDT risk severe weather outbreak its feels the grill had a date with the wind but i feel bad for yall guys prayers for iowa am Extreme Meterologist Miguel Chavez am from Memphis Tennessee
The sirens go off after the storm hit. Fortunately, we had a 2 hour warning for the storm in Michigan. When they warn us hours in advance of an approaching severe thunderstorm, we know we are in for some serious sh*t!
As that video progressed and it got closer and closer to the end of it I was thinking of one thing. If that damn Grill doesn't go flying somewhere I'm going to be really pissed off ... 😡😠🤬😤 Well glad you didn't lose your grill... so the grill took a 3-foot ride.... doesn't really appear you got the wind everyone else did because this felt like watching a thunderstorm...
Outdoor Weather Siren. They now turn those on when straight line winds are expected to exceed a certain threshold. 70mph is what I’m finding when I search.
sounds like tornado sirens to me, the kind they test routinely in the midwest. not a tornado though, like it matters. thnx fossil fuel industry, i love climate change. inland hurricanes now? :''( we had one where I live this june. while it was not nearly as big, a derecho had never been recorded happening before in the front range. edit: our derecho had dropped 8 in of snow, so it still gets weirder...
A couple of comments on some of the other comments. There was little or no warning before the storm struck. People don't sit in front of their TVs watching the weather channel. Fifteen minutes is not enough preparation time. Second, no one in Iowa had ever experienced hurricane force winds. You don't know what to expect untill you have experienced something like this. That Derecho came out of nowhere as far as those people knew. Now snow, they could tell the Floridians how to prepare for snow. I wisk he had shown an "after" shot of the street. I bet all of those garbage totes are about one county east.
Natasha M. I get the impression that “she” who is referred to as “ Laura” is that little boys older sister who is home alone. Dad says to tell her “ to go to the basement, “. “she’s fine”. “ it’s just wind.” I think the parents must be divorced- and it’s no wonder why... dad can’t be bothered by his child in need during a derecho.....
That's an Oklahoma Joe's isn't it? I have one. Those things aren't light, hard enough to move with the wheels and that thing moved perpendicular to the wheels.
@@louisaruth Things aren't fine, but they could have been a lot worse. (And yes, I too was affected by this storm.) That deck looked very slick when it got wet.
@@sarah2.017 if we don't organize against the fossil fuel industry to stop climate change, I am afraid things will be getting a lot worse. it makes me sad for that little girl's future.
@@louisaruth THAT IS WHAT A PARENT IS TO SAY TO A CHILD YOU DON'T SCARE THEM BUT TELL THEM IT IS FINE. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU. I HOPE YOU AREN'T A PARENT. WHAT A HORRID AND RIDICULOUS STATEMENT FROM YOU LOUISE.

@BlackSun I was visiting Pascagoula in 1969 when Camille hit....my uncle had pulled an airstream down from Mobile ....he worked fo the Navy shipbuilding. If not a weatherman in the Navy who told him to get the hell out of there I would not be here. Last report were in was not that strong of a hurricane according to the TV! We got in his 67 Dodge truck and went back to their home in Alabama......we got side wiped there by Camille there and then went back to Pascagoula a few days later to try and see about the 66 Impala and airstream trailor he left behind .....never found a trace of either. The guy next to us said he would keep an eye out on my uncles stuff when we left was never found.....or his trailor.
@BlackSun We are under the threat ...again...hurricane laura.....I have sold my house in Katy TX Aug 1st to zillow and have to be out by Oct 31st. Let me make it home to AZ and im going to kiss the ground when i cross the N.M. AZ boarder. I will never leave AZ again....yeah it hot...but no hurricanes, tornados , floods .....just heat!
@BlackSun You are right. Scariest storms I have ever been through are Hurricanes. They last for hours and you think they are never going to end. I live in NC also.

The winds you see here ARE NOWHERE NEAR HURRICANE STRENGTH! In Cedar Rapids, this derecho was equivalent to a cat 1. We just got hit by Hurricane Laura here in Louisiana. This video shows what a cat 4 looks like. It starts getting really wild at about minute 4. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TEAp85tMdAM.html
This was a hurricane eye wall. Thankfully it was fast moving. Could you imagine if it was like a coastal hurricane and stay for hours and hours on end? Interesting item UFO spotters had spotted UFOs in the area days prior to the storm hitting.
Fella, was that a propane tank attached to that grill??? Hank Hill don't know squat about grilling, charcoal is the key to a successful cookout guy....C'mon man!
It’s hard to believe that we trust Iowa to be the first state to vote in presidential primaries. I’ve viewed quite a few of the derecho videos out of Iowa and I’m amazed at the shear stupidity. Tornado sirens...stand and film through window. Flying debris ....stand and film through window... I think I saw Trump fly by...you should grab your flags and wave...
