George is absolutely right in his statement. Lately I don’t care about news about adaptations seeing how I’ve been burned so much, that it doesn’t seem like they’ll ever do anything justice. These writers feel like they are better than the original authors, and it shows.
@AntoineHasard
@AntoineHasard 3 месяца назад
The only reason a writer would have to make someone else's story their own is if they're not good enough to write their own story in the first place, and it shows.
@robertabblebaum7813
@robertabblebaum7813 3 месяца назад
I don't even think it's always that. Part of it is as a writer, you DO want to put something of yourself into your work. The other part of it is that there's this thought in Hollywood/writer's rooms/show runners that you have to develop some kind of hook, or character progression, or force a story into a traditional film/theater 3 act format. I think the terrible WoT show's first season is a good example of that. They wanted to try and force the story into a 'Mystery' of who might the Dragon Reborn be out of our 5 characters. Which is dumb, because everyone already knows... Or in the RoP they wanted to give Galadriel a more active back story and landed on the fact that a lot of her family died at the hands of Sauron, wouldn't that make you angry and mad. And how did she go from that to the Galadriel we see later on? TLDR: Lots of people have their hands in the adaptation. I think people make fundamental decisions early on in the process at a fairly high level, give that to the writers and say, 'we need you to get from here to there in 10 hours of television'.
@joshuafears4123
@joshuafears4123 3 месяца назад
It seems like Hollywood writers don't understand what an adaptation is. Your supposed to tell the story in a different medium. Sure there are changes that have to be made, but that doesn't mean make it your own. Too many writers view these stories as entities that just exist as if they had no author.

Whenever people talk about an adaptation that is different but still good, there are two movies in my mind that I don't think captured the original's spirit, that really were made the studio's own but are still good. Those are How to Train Your Dragon and Howl's Moving Castle. In both cases, the movie is way more widely known even though their connection to the original is very limited and in many ways both are independant creations. Sorry, just wanted to say that. Personally, the only thing I have against one of those movies is that there's never going to be an actual loyal adaptation to Howl's Moving Castle.

Martin's not wrong honestly every time I hear the words "we wanted to make it ours" in relation to some show or movie and damn do they just make it shit. Those that do end up being great are usually done by people who are fans of the source material, people who are invested in the ideas and the world they want to expand on and add to. The big winner in the last few years for me have been The Expanse TV show, The TV show got the character driven story down and even with making and having to make changes they did it with the source material in mind and it worked.

I would argue they are good in different ways. The movie is more humorous and magical in upfront ways. The book is like if you meet a guy, he starts telling you a story, and you start to question if he is telling the truth or fucking with you. It's an added layer that wouldn't have translated well to the screen. For instance, William Goldman had 2 daughters and no son. And there is no sequel. I have a really fancy copy with nice pictures.

I tend to agree with Martin when it comes to adaptations. It's rare that changes to narratives make for better stories. It's even rarer that something is made better by such an approach. It's right up there with, "We're going to take a more grounded approach." Despite the potential payday I can't see myself ever selling movie rights to any of my stories. Not that I write anything worth adapting. Not yet. Sony seems to be desperately trying to sink their movie division. Really refreshing to see traditional cover art on the Witcher Edge of the World graphic novel. There is still a place for traditional art in sci-fi and fantasy communities. (The cover was done by Kai Carpenter btw)

As dangerous as this might be for me, I wholeheartedly believe that the Lord of the Rings films are at least on par with the book. They are different, to be sure, as they are trying to accomplish different things, but I think they are of the same quality in every meaningful "objective" light. I also have a soft spot for The Hobbit films. Once again, they are entirely different from the story presented in the book, but I think the additions made in the films weren't an attempt to "be better" than the book, but to expand the narrative scope of the story (and I would argue that it succeeds at making the movie feel unique, epic, and immersive as its own piece of art). Basically, I think Jackson is one of the few exceptions to Martin's comment.

I don't think this is a crazy take at all. The films are among the greatest ever made and, like you said, I think a huge part of that is they aren't setting out to "improve" the story. They realized what they needed to do for dramatic tension, condensing the runtime, etc - but they clearly made great efforts to keep as much Tolkien as possible.

I feel like there is something truth the the statement “the book is the book the movie is the movie.” You cannot compare them one to one. Books have so much more time to bring you along and lay groundwork for story and characters, and a movie can more of a visual spectacle. I feel like it is almost like complaining that a painting inspired by a song has no reference to the second verse and has no melody at all.

About adaptations: I mostly agree with George. I think there is a difference between needing to change aspects because of the medium and the need to drastically change plots and characters to make it more "Film Friendly". Great examples of a good version: Gone Girl (in my opinion, one of the best translated adaptations without a lot of changes) - GoT (the first few seasons made some changes that were only for the benefit of the story... we don't talk about the later seasons). Bad examples of good movies: I will always complain about Harry Potter's director changing Hermione's personalities to make her more likeable and turn Ron into a dull one liner because "he liked Hermione the most". Adaptations can be, well, adapted, but without messing with the essences of what makes the source material loved.

The HP movies even vary by movie. I know it's an unpopular opinion, but I thought the 5th movie was a terrible adaptation. It's the longest book, yes has the second shortest run time behind Deathly Hallows 2 (which almost doesn't count, cause it's half of a 2 part movie).

@@elise85391Yes, although The Order was my least favorite book of the series, so I kinda was ok with a shorter movie...but the lack of time with Sirius and the oversimplification of some plots were not a great decision, I agree.

The two shows that immediately come to mind for me as being unequivocally better than what they are adapting are The Boys and Arcane, both of which blow the original material out of the water IMO. That being said I do also think we’re in somewhat of a golden age for adaptations. Even if most of them aren’t better than the original a lot of more modern ones are still very good, for example One Piece Live Action, Fallout, Invincible, etc.

No Country for Old Men was an absolutely amazing adaptation that switched stuff around from the book. Admittedly, McCarthy wrote it first as a screenplay, then a book when it didn’t land with producers. But still, an amazing adaptation nonetheless.

I have only seen Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter out of those. And they are great movies, really well made with good attention to detail and great casts. But they aren’t great adaptations of the books, which in my opinion have better stories and characters most of the time, especially in Harry potters case. For Lord of the Rings they basically just changed a lot to make it more palatable for a general audience. Which is fair enough. Basically they add a lot of character drama that didn’t exist in the books(e.g. Faramir and Theoden acting like idiots in The Two Towers, which didn’t happen in the books, Frodo telling Sam to leave in Return of the King which also didn’t happen in the books) , change some characters character arcs(Aragorn who wants to be king and try to save the West(though worries more about whether he lead the fellowship sufficiently) from the books -> Reluctant hero Aragorn of the films) and they add a lot of over the top action(e.g. Legolas in general, the giant mega invincible ghost army, it couldn’t actually kill anyone in the books and it was just used to steal the pirate ships and fill them with Aragorn’s men, the cavalry charge down the really steep hill at helms deep, in the books it was men on foot from a previous battle that the Rohirrim lost who regrouped under Gandalf and etc…). Gimli also gets used as comic relief often, when he’s much more serious in the books. These are understandable changes as they no doubt make the films more watchable for people who haven’t read the books, I just feel that they lose some of the sense of mythology and seriousness of the books. Great movies though, some of my favourites, brilliant cast as well. As for Harry Potter they are again great movies but the writer just made some strange decisions. Overall the movies follow the basic story of the books well, and of course they can’t fit all of the little moments from the books in. But they just make some weird characterisation decisions that in my opinion are just worse than the books. Basically Hermione has much more personality in the books and is maybe made a bit too powerful and unfazed by everything in the films and is given too many actions of other characters. I find the book version more likeable, she has better relationships with the other characters(except it’s possible that her friendship with Harry is a bit overdone in the films in some ways, it’s a bit different to the book) and more personality. Ron gets absolutely character assassinated, he gets turned into a bit of an idiot for no real reason. He comes off as more intelligent, competent and eloquent in the books, as well as having a much better relationship with both Hermione and Harry in the books. There are times in the films where they have him insult Hermione for no reason when in the books he defended her and etc… they turned some of his braver moments into comic relief(I.e. the spider forest), and often use his character as comic relief. Ginny has absolutely no personality in the films but has a lot more personality in the books. In line with this the romantic subplots of the books get utterly ignored, so lots of people who have only seen the movies question them as not making sense. Which is understandable because 90% of the time Ron and Hermione don’t seem to like each other thaaaat much in the films and there were loads of moments from the books they could’ve added to show their development and how close those two were, but they didn’t, again even making him a bit of a dick to her when in the book the opposite occurred(film/book 3 when snape insults Hermione for answering a question). And Ginny just doesn’t have much personality in the films, basically never being developed beyond her film 2 personality. Not really that important to the overall plot but they stand out because they are important to the characters and people like love stories, and frankly they are mostly not very well written in the films, certainly much worse written that in the book. And I guess you could say that they don’t really include enough of Voldemorts backstory and tone down some of the scenes, like the book 5 ending fight or book 7 in general, but that’s understandable to keep the ratings down. Overall they are also great movies and I’m honestly a fan of the cast because they did really well in the movies, really well made. It’s just the writing of the characters is weird and in my opinion kind of annoying at times, the books had more likeable and better written characters. But yeah great movies regardless. Probably the two best adaptations for fantasy book series, it’s just they do make some big changes at times, so they definitely arent better.
