A lot of the exposition is going on with the assumption that people who haven't read the books might try this VR sim. And a few other changes made from the source material are to accommodate the shortcomings of the VR. All in all, I'd say the high point of this is that it may encourage people who play it to read the books.

Thought syl should be more childlike but she was still spacey which was good. She was a bit more hateful than I thought necessary. I thought the parshensi were to have orange or rust colored carapace but I did like the look in general. I almost picture a darth maul type of skin color. Chull was spot on in my opinion. Great video though thanks for posting it if they release a full game I'd definitely buy vr but for now that seems too expensive to buy for one game that last 10-20 min

I’m also a big Brandon Sanderson fan, I only started reading his stuff last year but instantly fell in love, Ive read through all of the stormlight archive and Elantris, and I just finished the 2nd mistborn book literally 10 minutes ago so I still have a lot more reading to do to complete the cosmere, also I have VR so I’ll definitely be checking this out, thanks for the review!

I *love* Brian Sanderson's books too. I always thought the Mistborn series with its Allomancy and Feruchemy would make for an amazing game especially if set in the later series. Law man with powers bringing justice to varied enemies with wildly different power sets? Being able to surf power lines and push off metallic objects? Crazy parkour? Heck, there's even your own Q, building gadgets to help you take down these various villains. So much room to creatively beat new enemies.

I was so disappointed with Mistborn Era 2 on my first read through. I like my Fantasy books with swords and dragons. Guns?! TRAINS?! Nope.... Brandon Sanderson though has earned my trust. By the end of the first book, my prejudices faded and I couldn't get enough of the characters. EVERY one of his books would be fantastic as a fully realized VR game... or Anime :D

It would be cool if it was more linear, not so free and more like a set of interactive cutscenes with limited areas of exploration, mainly just to check out little details in a scene. They could make a 'typical day in the life of kaladin at any age after the time he joins dalinar. Even if you couldn't lose it would be a killer vr movie.

I absolutely love Stormlight and literally everything else Sanderson writes. I'm mostly a scifi fan but I like some fantasy and reflecting on why I like Sanderson's fantasy so much has helped me to understand why I like some fantasy and not others. It's the logic of the magic systems. Sanderson develops his magic as more of a science than a magic, which makes his fantasy almost more scifi than fantasy. He sets out strict rules for the magic system so that I can understand what's going on, what's possible, what's not, and intelligently assess what the characters do with it. That's what makes magic interesting to me and Sanderson does it every time but always in a new and unique way. Plus, he's just a great writer all-around xD This game, on the other hand... well, let's just say it's as good as I expected :P

(Ongoing edits as I'm typing while watching, and I accidentally hit post) At the start... lashed to a bridge by the look of things. Definitely not what happened, but still brutal. Spot on with the Lashings, it's well enough but the not-touching and the telekinesis can be just user-friendly kinda stuff. I'm sure they could make a proper Lashing system, of touching the object and either painting a second point with a touch, or assigning a direction with look/other hand, but it probably wasn't the focus of this and would be a bit of work, I'd assume they have the telekinesis/throw from another project, probably. Thing of note, it seems like the idea in this demo is that Syl just found/chose someone who already embodied/spoke the ideals who happened to be in the chasms, based on dialogue. Not sure if that checks out with how the bonds work, but that's fine. Rockbuds are alright enough, based on the book sketches it's close, The 'true' rockbuds lie open like that, the trouble is the leafy structure as opposed to the tendrils. Though, this could be a different sort of subset, as there are a bunch of different types. As you said, this is fine enough. Though, Syl's line doesn't quite fit, as rockbuds actually look like rocks when folded up according to the sketch, which would make the name make sense. Chull's pretty spot on, though pretty sure there aren't wild chull in the Chasms. And a tamed chull probably wouldn't ball-up when someone approached it, but that's the most minor thing. (Also if you could Lash the chull at all it would be fully flown away, though that could be a 'not enough stormlight' thing, but even then I don't think the half-lashings were actually half of a full lashing so it wouldn't just hover for a bit) "Everything but Humans" Was Humans actually ever used in the book? I may be wrong, but I believe it was Alethi or whichever race they were. Decent bit of writing on Syl, being unsure and all. Chasmfiend.... nest? I mean, isn't a major part of a few problems that people don't know where the Chasmfiends actually nest, just somewhere further east in the chasms? Maybe our character is further east, but the Chasmfiends just kind of roamed about. Fine for a demo, but another little nitpick. Parshendi... yeah, not great. Also, Syl wouldn't have a bias like this pretty sure. Another thing, punching Parshendi carapace doesn't seem like a good idea. The Carapace also wasn't like skull helmets, described more like ridges and stuff. Sparring practice, yeah. Lashing to the wall could have been done better, yeah. Probably a teleport is best, even if that would also be a little disorienting. Santhidspren.... yeah, but I'm also not quite sure what spren they're actually meant to be. They're just kind of... there, in that spot, but also when you Lash things. Based them appearing when you lash, maybe they're windspren, or bindspren. Based on Syl's lines though, that seems to point toward the arrow things that kind of hang out near chasmfiends (and 'skyeels in kharbranth' according to one of the journal/sketch entries. They might also appear around santhids, which could technically make santhidspren valid. (This bit about spren has been based on rough memory, and also the wiki which is pretty good about tracking stuff) The actual chrysalis was underwhelming, being further away and just looking like a rock. Combat's meh as it's punching, Syl's little "Wait, My right, your left" was a nice touch. Lashings are... powerful, as a mix of being able to lash at range and passively-recharging, but that's a game thing we went over earlier. However, I think I saw some painspren when people get hit, yourself included which is a decent touch.. weird, as they're whispy flying things again, instead of on the ground as described, but that's a vision change again. Again, the parshendi themselves are meh. Design's not too great, the grey carapace, while maybe not wrong, is kinda bland. Pretty sure the skin was mentioned as red and black, too. Chasmfiend appearance was GREAT, though it totally should have come up onto the plateau fully, I think the design was on-point just like the Chull. Gemheart powering up, fair enough. I don't remember if they were charged as they were harvested, but I also don't think any surgebinders came into contact with fresh gemhearts so it wasn't mentioned... though I may be wrong. Big boulder lashing was great, besides the usual at-a-distance problem. That had the good feeling of lashing it in a direction. Wait no it is Kaladin... yeah I got nothing, I missed that at the start. Overall, I imagine it's great to have something interactive like this, as you said after playing. Sad it was short, another character interaction would have been great. They already broke the book already, it would have been great to have Dalinar call out to you at the end, in the vein of the meeting after the Tower battle, leaping over to you in Shardplate. It would have been great to have a shardblade or honorblade section, as another commenter pointed out a Shardblade would be perfect for VR as it can pass through things and cut out their soul. (Meaning they could give you a non-tangible weapon and 'kill' things you cut through without working out a feedback system, or limb damagine, though other games have done well with that) And the after-game thing you were talking about pretty much everything I typed out here... And yes, the Stormlight Archive (and other books, but I've not read them.) are AMAZING books that everyone should read.

Just to nitpick, I guess, kaladin actually doesn't have to touch an object to move it. In book 5 of the way of kings he not only changes the trajectory of arrows shot at him but he pulls a hundred or so out of the air into his shield all at once. So the telekinesis like movement in the game isn't so inaccurate.
@TribalInstincts
@TribalInstincts 3 года назад
*presses nerd glasses up* Weeelllll.... the way he pulled arrows out of the sky was with a reverse gravitational lashing, typically, that lashing allows the windrunner(or skybreaker) to alter his/her own gravitational pull but if --touching-- an object, they can use the gravitational surge in it. So you see, no telekinesis, he never acted on the arrows directly, he just gave his shield more gravity, sucking the arrows in ;)

ugh. I haven't played a vr game or have worn a vr headset first to put it out there. But I wasn't very impressed with this particular game to be honest. I also can't get behind the whole teleporting move mechanic... it's too disorienting even just watching it on a 2d screen. I'd rather there be a button you press to move forward like a regular game. i realize that some people get dizzy or nauseous or whatever. but I don't see how. I guess I have to use a vr headset to see for myself... some people say they don't even feel that way, so maybe nausea in vr can be fixed in the future? idk. but it looks lame the way it is right now to me... On a side note. i did find the magic aspects to be a neat gimmick and would love to see some more implementation with puzzles using that system. I'd really like to see something like a portal game in vr. that would be cool as hell to me.
@azrealle9474
@azrealle9474 6 лет назад
Personally I've only experienced nausea from Fallout 4 VR, but the reason that it seems to happen is because of it's sliding movement. My feet aren't moving but my brain thinks that i am walking and I start to feel dizzy within moments of loading the game. Room-scale helps with this a little, but only a little. In other titles that i have played I stick to room-scale movement as much as possible.
@catbert7
@catbert7 6 лет назад
It's like the uncanny valley: The closer the movement system gets to actual human movement, the more the differences stand out to your brain. It starts to trick your brain into thinking you're really moving and that makes all the imperfections stand out in glaring detail. That's how you get sick. Teleporting causes no nausea because it's totally unreal and easy for the brain to dismiss. That said, your brain will become accustomed to the sliding-type movement if you give it enough exposure, just like seasickness or car sickness; you just have to suffer a bit first :p
