Notification Squad! This video contains SPOILERS for Rhythm of War! I'm so glad to finally have the first episode of SoSA up. This video went through so many different directions and forms, I wouldn't even know where to begin! A mixture between wanting to top everything I'd done before whilst not having made a video for the better part of a year provided me with multiple setbacks and frustrations but hey, we're here now and I'm very proud of the end result. Thank you again for all the support and I hope you enjoyed the video!
It's interesting that Kalak's 'madness' is indecision in the moment, but long term he is quite a crafty operator and is single-minded in his desire to get off world. Very good overview!
I liked this video, particularly the ending. A couple of points: 1) AFAWK, we have no evidence that Gavilar was working with the Ghostbloods, as you suggest. We know that he knew of Thaidakar, but that's about it. From everything we learn in RoW, I think it's pretty clear that Gavilar and the Ghostbloods were rivals racing for the secret that BAM contains. 2) The best thing in this video is how you point out that Kalak's (and by extension all the Heralds') madness could very well stem from the imprisonment of BAM. This is something I hadn't put together. We know (from Oathbringer) that Honor was dying (if not dead) at the time of the Recreance, because he didn't/couldn't intervene when the Radiants of the time learned of the contents of the Eile Stele. Having said that: 3) I don't know if I believe that Honor's Death (or Splintering) was caused by BAM's imprisonment. Having said that, we have to explain SOME reason why the Sibling lost the tone. Everything comes back to BAM. I think we really need to think about Connection, and the way Shards relate to it. Recall that those who follow Honor believe in ten Surges, with Connection being one of them. Whereas those who follow Odium--exemplified by Raboniel's lessons in RoW--state that Connection is not a real Surge. So Connection being something of Honor, but not Odium, is something that can be deduced. If so... how did BAM manage to Connect to the parsh to start the False Desolation? Did she manage to corrupt Honor to gain that power of Connection to do it, starting the Splintering of Honor and causing huge grief because she still had that Connection (to Honor) when she was imprisoned? This seems a possible explanation, but there are others. Book 5 seems to have three main story threads: 1) Szeth's mission to cleanse Shinovar, 2) Shallan's race to BAM's gemstone, and 3) The Contest of Champions. I'm looking forward to more theory.
We know that the Sibling fears being unmade, which means Spren can be unmade. What if Mishram was a splinter of Honour before she was unmade into Ba-Ado? If she retained some of her Honour powers, it could explain the connection abilities, as well as how something with Honours surge would serve Odium by bringing about a desolation. Furthermore, Sanderson has never specified that the three bondsmith Spren were always the bondsmith Spren, just that there are three now and there never have been more than three bondsmiths active at the same time. I think the timeline doesn't add up with the Sibling and the Stormfather as there used to be bondsmiths while Honour was alive and as such while the Stormfather didn't exist yet (?) Right? I just think there's definitely something to BAM that's never come together and perhaps this might answer something. But I agree it's all about Connection. If RoW was about learning about light, SA5 will be learning about Connection.
The amount of information from the Stormlight Archives can get so overwhelming. I love that this video helps to break it down. Thank you so much! I would love to see an episode on the Ghost Bloods. Wouldn't be surprised if it took 2 videos to talk about them lol
Wonderful to hear from you! I have to confess that, when reading these novels I get so caught up in the characters and the moments, that I barely notice all the other things going on. Thank you for pulling all this together to explore all the deeper layers.
I’m 14 minutes in and omg this is hands down the best video that has given me any information on anything Brandon Sanderson. Thank you so much for putting in the time and effort for something like this! Keep it up!
This I s great! We need more stormlight content on RU-vid. Some recommendations for future videos that might be good 1. Ghostbloods 2. Radiant orders 3. Different shards 4. Current location of heralds 5. Breakdown of each Unmade 6. Spren and Spren bonds 7. Realmatic Theory 8. The list of worldhoppers in roshar 9. The Diagram
I'm loving this channel and your videos!! I do think you need to name your videos better in the future so they seem more appealing. I almost didn't click it because Sons of Honor just turned out to be an ineffective bunch of zealots and I didn't wanna invest time in them. I think a better name could have been "Kelek and the Secrets of Roshar" or something like that. A little sensational, but you deserve a lot more traffic and a lot more viewers!!! Please keep doing these. I love them.
Even as someone who tries to keep up with some of the main theories and the deeper Stormlight lore, I still loved this video and I think it’s great to make videos like these so that newbies and diehard fans alike have a go-to place for some of the really important parts of the story! Already looking forward to the next one.
Amazing video! Re: Kelek's journal and specifically, his words about capturing Mishram and the "wound to Roshar." I always suspected that the recreance was similar to the plot of Elantris. Without spoiling that plot, I suspect that Spren work for the bond like Geography in Elantris.
This is one of the best videos you've ever done, it actually really helped me get some things straight that I've been thinking about recently. I've only read the four SA books once and I'm about to start them again so this is the kind of stuff I wanted to get straight before the reread. More of this would be awesome since there is so much more to be explored, my mind is jumping to so many things right now. Btw, I've always thought it was at least some of the heralds and possibly one or both of the Ghostbloods and Sons of Honor that were responsible for the shattering of him. I can't wait to get started on my second read to see what details I can find.
I like to think that I'm pretty aware of the background stuff going on in Roshar but this video just combines all the little details in a very dense but viewable package. Very good job and glad to see you back.
For me, what draws me to the stormlight archive the most is the lore, the world, the magic, the secrets and deep history. It the sketches from in-world notebooks. The exploration of fabrials and cosmere science in general. For me, that's the good stuff. Plus, in general I have a hard time connecting to characters in books, but the story and lore always pulls me in and immerses me which is 👌
My husband and I LOVED your video!! I'm a huge Cosemere fan! I've read the books about the three or four times now. I loved your editing, loved your presentation, loved the music, and pretty much everything that you did! I'm very excited to watch more of your videos. My husband noticed a lot of the different editing shots you did and was very impressed with what you did without any computer graphics. Shots of the books to form a back drop, shots of a candle with quotes etc. Your view should have another zero added to them, at least!
I've read the Stormlight Archive books many times each and some of these points and paragraphs you bring up are still not ones I've focused on. This was really great insight into the future of the Stormlight Archive books and in some ways the Cosmere as a whole. Keep up the great work! This was interesting and thought provoking.
Love that you're back! It's been a while since I last read SA and I'm really looking forward to my first reread of the series. Kinda bought a lot of books though so I'm going to read those first and doing a full cosmere reread around the time of The Lost Metal release.
This video is brilliant and I have subbed. I've read all of the cosmere books at least twice, some of them three or four times, and I still learned new things watching this. Thank you!!!
This video was super helpful and the quality was great. Appreciate the hard work you put into these! Def excited to learn more about Gavilar and Mishram
Fantastic video! I learned a lot, thank you. One thing that I interpreted differently to you was the line about Kalak being broken, I thought that he felt trapped in an endless cycle, hence betraying the oath pact and wanting to leave Roshar, and because of his experiences on Braize he was sickened by the idea of Mishram suffering a similar endless fate. I suspect this wasn't him feeding them a line to try to get them to do something to help him leave Roshar, but instead was something he felt needed to happen because he knew what an eternity of prison felt like, and that nothing deserved that fate.
I also wouldn't be shocked if Kalak is acting against his own self interest here, as this would be him acting with honour and continuing his ties to Roshar.
I loved this video. Well, I love all of your videos about the Cosmere. I did have a hard time understanding what you were saying sometimes over the music though. I can't wait for the next one.
4:19 it only takes one herald breaking for then to be returned. Thats part of why they abaondaned Taln, because he had never broken, it was always someone else who broke first.
Thank you so much for your hard work on this video! I can’t wait for the next one. I can’t seem to get enough Stormlight content, and yours is top notch!
So happy you’re back! I always learn so much from each video you put out. Really appreciate all the effort you put into Stormlight research and video production! Keep up the great work!!
*hero of ages spoilers*!!! Do you think the Recreance may have been a similar scenario to the Kandra at the end of hero of ages that killed themselves to prevent Ruin controlling them? Could Odium or Ba-Ado-Mishram have been trying to corrupt them in someway?
I want Kalak and Nale to meet in Book 5. The last time we see them together was the day Gavilar is assassinated. Their Organizations- Sons of Honor and Skybreakers have remained enemies for a long time.
I have a theory that the unmade were once spren of the Dawn Cities. If that is the case, it makes sense that trapping one broke something with Roshar. If the Herald's are bound to Honor, and we know that Honor (as well as Cultivation and Odium) are bound to Roshar because they are so invested in it, it stands to reason that breaking Roshar would cause problems with everyone bound to it.
Great as always! You should do a reaction to Brandon Sanderson last announcement on his RU-vid channel. Love to see your thoughts. It was trending #1 on RU-vid. I had fun covering it.
Recently discovered your channel and I'm TOTALLY HOOKED! Incredible content that is a great addition to the collected research of the Cosmere! Keep it up and thank you so much for the great explanations!
I haven’t really watched any lore videos since I first got into the Cosmere years ago and was figuring out who the Shards and Andonalsium were, but this was well made. I liked your balance between explanation and your own theories. I’ve read/listened to the whole series at least five times and still learned several things!
An older video but coming back now a few months prior to wind and truths release. Just wanted to say that upon a finished reread, Kalak is by far my favorite herald. Named "The High Judge" and "The Holy One" due to his decision making and his own moral compass which, in the storm light archives, crumbles and his personality becomes the opposite of both. Ironically one of the coolest and tragic characters that I hoped to see every time it was a new chapter.
So glad to see you back. This video was awesome. You've really outdone yourself. Thank you for the level of effort that you put into this. The way that you laid all of this information out was seamless and very easy to follow. You pointed out things that I never realized and probably wouldn't have ever picked up on. I look forward to episode 2 but definitely take your time. We aren't going anywhere.
