Actually there was ONE thing like it at the time. Like something literally like it and in a way was doing DB better then how DB started. Difference is this only got one episode while DB was allowed to evolve and become the defacto Internet versus series. I'm not making up the date BTW; that's when it officially premiered... on Blip.... you know I may need to back up and explain more what I'm talking about since there's a chance some of you could have no idea what I'm referring okay. Okay long story short but once upon a time there was this website called thatguywiththeglasses. Which hosted various online personalities who though updated their videos on a now defunct site called blip got more attention and formed a community on the TGWTG site. What happened to TGWTG and whose even on what remains of that isn't important but the point is there were a fair amount of different personalities though mostly making online review series also dabbled occassionally in talking or doing videos on other things as well. One of those personalities was Noah Antwiler also known as the internet personality The Spoony One. He was someone mostly known for video game reviews (Final Fantasy VIII, X,X-2 and XIII, a retrospective of all the Ultima games etc) obscure movie reviews (The Clones of Bruce Lee, Reb Brown's Captain America movies etc) and vlogging about newer movies games or shows he saw and gained a following. One of his vlogs back in mid 2010 was on the game and the series Deadliest Warrior. Which was a Spike TV series in the late 2000s to 2010s proposing made up battles of real life groups of known warriors (like Vikins, Spartans, Yazkuza etc) against one another to see who was well deadliest which actually also probably inspired Death Battle as well. But it did inspire Noah who actually hated the game and TV series finding them inane and silly but was inspired by the idea of "hey what if you apply that sort of out there scenario to fictional characters?" Thus coming up with the idea of Deadliest Character. It was a series pilot he worked on for a couple months before dropping again December 5th, 2010 on the site and honestly comparing it to the first episode of death battle... yeah Deadliest Character was actually the better episode. There wasn't as much focus on character but there more focus put on explaining the lore (helped by the fact Noah got cameos of people who knew the characters so well. Lewis Lovhaug aka Linkara is a huge Power Rangers fan and James Rolfe aka the Angry Video Game Nerd is a huge Godzilla fan) and yeah though using stock clips Noah also had someone animate the fight as well which for 2010 for this kind of project is more impressive then Ben's spirte fight on video editing software. Thus if you go by which show started out first Deadliest Character made the better first introduction but it didn't attract as large an audience (since again it was on blip/TGWTG which doesn't host as large an audience as youtube/screw attack) plus Noah admitted it took way too long to make episodes especially since he couldn't even pay the guy who animated the first episode enough to animate a second one while DB was able to get it's first 12 epsiodes up every other week for a consistent 6th month period, also showing improvement over time and gaining a larger and larger audience. Granted even most hardcore DB fans admit it's only in the very last batch of episodes of season 1 that things really amped up to it's true potential but proving it was a consistent show is what allowed them to get to that point. I bring all of this up because I want to bring this is an idea that was around in other people's mind at the time and I think is worth talking about here if we're talking about what was going on around this episode's premiere. I also admit I am a huge fan of TGWTG and even some of the people who are/were on the site and honestly it's only because of TGWTG do I even know about Death Battle because I saw a video of some TGWTG people at a panel where someone asked one of them what they thought of the Zelda vs Peach death battle (I believe back when the newest episode was Thor Vs Raiden with Batman Vs Spiderman recently dropping after that) which made me look that up and then get hooked into the rest of the show and being a fan since. But yeah this idea was done and even for it's time done better but DB ultimately did perserve and yeah evolved into a show that fully lives up to it's premise. So it's good to look back and realize a lot of the issues along the way that were thankfully upped in the next round of episodes though yeah still slow going. I'd be down with you doing more one offs like this talking about the first season whenever you find the time and heh hopefully won't fall into more procrastination periods which man I know all about those.
