From the 1943 movie, “Stormy Weather.” The greatest dance number ever captured on film.

Yes we know, it seems lots of people see this for the first time and see how the comments and other legendary tap dancers say this is the best dance ever in film and now people are just repeating that as if it’s their own opinion lmao like someone could literally never have seen this or heard of the Nicholas brothers or cab Calloway before, spend one morning watching videos and feel comfortable saying what you said. It’s just such a popular opinion you have to understand it’s like someone doing a Michael jackson reaction and me going “Michael jackson is the best most popular pop star ever” it just comes off like you just found them the day you left the comment

The sheer talent and athleticism displayed by the Nicholas Brothers always brings tears to my eyes! I saw Stormy Weather in the early seventies in a church a few blocks north of Harvard Square. The pastor was a film aficionado and ran a film series there on Sunday nights. The audience was soooooo happy and energized by this film finale that we all danced down to Harvard Square. No lie!

All of this done in ONE TAKE!! The late Gregory Hines said it would impossible to recreate this performance

same thing with the berry brothers.they did a stunt where they jumped off a balcony into a split.these black dance groups were amazing.its in there blood because tap dance was created by a african american dancer born in providence who mixed african taditional dance and clasic footwork to create tap dance.

U cannot compare cab Calloway to hip hop cab has his own aura his own style that nobody will ever duplicate ever 💯

No boo this that style is called scatting this back in 1941 way before reggae artist or rapper try to emulate. Ella Fitzgerald is the mother scatting she was jazz this was big band era never compare artists to these trailblazers they could never do what these two brothers have done.

There is one thing they had back then which is difficult to find in Modern times --- CLASS. Pure class, talent, no fake photoshopping, and the dancers did their dance in ONE TAKE, not 20 or more like today. Modern dancing experts said, as Damon mentioned below, it would be impossible to recreate that level of dancing today. As for the band, it was hotter than most you will find today.

I'm sure they'd done that dance hundreds of times before touring in vaudeville!

@@leighcochran7303 My father was a tap dancer in Vaudeville, and knew the Nicholas Brothers, and Dad is 98 but still alive. From asking him and all the research I can find, this performance routine and stage set was specifically designed for the movie "Stormy Weather," and neither the set nor the routine was used prior to that, or since that time. They performed the movie routine without any film rehearsals, and according to the Director, it was performed in only one film take, with no retakes, which is incredible and what really made it an epic classic. No tap dancer in modern times has admitted they could replicate that dance, and if they tried, which most will not because it is a dangerous routine, it would require many rehearsals and many more than one take.
@almostfm
@almostfm 3 года назад
I'm sorry, but they didn't do it in one take. I'm sure they could have done the routine all the way through, but there are multiple camera angles, which for one take would have meant setting up multiple film cameras. They'd show up in some of the shots from other cameras.
@finderkeeperrrs

@@user-DrJoe-Future no disrespect. But I believe the whole thing wasn't done in one take. I think the stair scene with the splits was done in one take. No against you just trying to clarify. I'm just a hugeee fan of them. Lol
@user-DrJoe-Future
@user-DrJoe-Future Год назад
@@finderkeeperrrs According to the Movie's Choreographer, Nick Castle, who was on the movie set and helped plan the performance, stated it was filmed non-stop in one take. According to the Movie Director, Andrew Stone, the Nicholas Brothers performance was not even rehearsed prior to filming. That is how amazing they were.

This is 1943, during World War 2. History proves that nothing today is new. It's just a rehash of what came before it. Unfortunately the greatness gets deleted more and more with time. From big orchestras like this to sampling someone else's music in a studio. Black music did not get better. This is what talent used to be like. Extreme. You had to bring it hard or not at all.

By the grace of God, Fayard and Harold Nichols never took dancing lessons, they could just do it! They were dancing when they were small children, and were featured at Harlem's Cotton Club, and did some movie work also! NO ONE today can beat them! As an elderly widow I've seen the whole STORMY WEATHER movie numerous times! The way they dance today is trashy and has no class in my opinion! Please stop the profanity, sir!
