The audience in this film watching the dancers are almost all black, many of the men are in USA Army uniform, as the film was made during WWII. The band-members are actually mixed, as swing bands were reasonably well integrated, but could only play in some places, and only were welcome in some states of the USA.

There was no faking this sort of thing back in 1942. It was live, live live. Keep in mind that this was all black in the day. This was real talent. They didn't fake it. It had to be real. These people had talent and were not faking anything. The Nicolas brothers were the top black talents of their Era. So was Cab Calloway.

The Nicholas Brothers were a duo of dancing brothers, Fayard (1914-2006) and Harold (1921-2000), who excelled in a variety of techniques, including a highly acrobatic technique known as "flash dancing". With a high level of artistry and bold innovations, they were considered by many to be the greatest tap dancers of their time. Their performance in the "Jumpin' Jive" musical number (with Cab Calloway and his orchestra) featured in the 1943 film Stormy Weather was hailed as one of the most virtuosic motion picture dance routines of all time. The Nicholas brothers in Stormy Weather (1943) Growing up surrounded by vaudeville acts as children, they became stars of the jazz circuit during the Harlem Renaissance and performed on stage, in film and on television well into the 1990s. 🇫🇷

@TSIRKLAND
@TSIRKLAND 10 месяцев назад
Respectfully: "Unrehearsed in one take with no editing" is basically true, to a certain extent, but not in the way that most people seem to think. Many people get confused about the phrases "no rehearsal" and "one take." (and there was definitely editing.) "No rehearsal" does not mean, "we made this up off the tops of our heads in the moment," it means, "We rehearsed and practiced for hours and hours and hours- weeks and months- in the dance studio, so that when it came time to be on set with the lights and the cameras, we filmed right away without a 'rehearsal take' first." What "one take" means is that they set up the cameras from a certain angle and lighting, cued everything up, rolled camera, and the Nicholas Brothers danced their hearts out for thirty or sixty perfect seconds. No "Fayard, you were a little late with that second drop, let's do a take two," "Harold, your left foot was behind the beat, let's go in for take three." They captured that section of the dance perfectly in ONE TAKE. Then they set up the next angle, lights, set pieces, cued everything up, rolled cameras, and the Nicholas Brothers danced with perfection for another thirty seconds, with no second take necessary. Then they set up for the next angle, and took that shot in ONE TAKE. One take each, for every shot. If you watch you can see twelve distinct edits- cuts from one camera angle to another. Not one continuous take for the entirety of the three-minute dance sequence. The dance sequence was definitely captured on film in multiple shots, EACH of which was filmed in one take- which is in itself an amazing achievement by two supremely talented and dedicated dancing legends! -My 2¢

1942 film "Stormy Weather". I actually prefer the original black and white to the colorized version. The title song was sung by the Lena Horne, and it became her trademark. She was my dad's favorite singer...absolutely beautiful woman with an amazing voice. Cab Calloway and his band played at the Cotton Club in Harlem, a very famous venue back then. Calloway's huge hit was "Minnie the Moocher". He later sang that tune in the film "The Blues Brothers". I love "Jumpin' Jive". I watch every reaction I can!

Stormy Weather (1943), starring Lena Horne, Bill Robinson, and Cab Calloway, is loosely based upon the life and times of its star, dancer Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. Fats Waller's performance of "Ain't Misbehavin'" and Lena Horne's performance of "Stormy Weather" are two other musical treats from the film.

They were running out of money and film so what you see was a filmed all in One Take after only One rehearsal. In those days there was No auto tune, computer enhancement or tricks. You Had to hone your talent and put in your time, effort and dedication and hard work. The Greatest Generation they were called, they were the generation who at the average age of 18 stormed the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. They were raised by WW1 veterans and taught as we were, God, family, country. Hard work and determination. Not like the 'gimme' 'me first' 'that's too hard' 'I can't' like the last couple of generations. Here is the film in it's original black and white. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XPAPHVAmp1U.html

All real - no computer generated images there! From the 1943 film "Stormy Weather", which was actually in black & white - that sequence has been "colourised". I believe it was also the first "major" film where all the lead actors were black. The Nicholas Brothers were "teachers in residence" at Harvard and actually gave dancing lessons to Michael & Janet Jackson amongst others. They do another great sequence with Dorothy Dandridge, dancing and singing to Chattanooga Choo-choo in the Glenn Miller film "Sun Valley Serenade".

As has been said, all real. That being said, there were techniques they used to protect themselves. If you notice, on many of the splits, the brothers would have their back leg bent. This reduces stress on both the tendons and hip joints. It is more difficult for men to do a full split--not that it's easy for anyone. Prince, for example, damaged his hips from doing too many full splits. The pain led directly to his death. You also are getting a chance to see one of the great bandleaders in action in this clip: Cab Calloway. Brilliant crazy man, Cab. But this film was filled with stunningly brilliant performers.

That’s the way I cringe watching some performers today. But for much different reasons. Talent has been discarded and replaced by computerized vocals, autoTune, pitch correction and disgusting on stage actions for shock value. I can't let some peoples personal behavior go. I don't care if they are the best at something if they are a terrible human being. Harold Nicolas was married to one of the most beautiful and talented woman in the world and allegedly he couldn't stop abusing and cheating on her. She was pregnant and due and when she went into labor instead of taking her to the hospital he took her to his sisters house and took the only vehicle to "play golf". Dorothy tried to wait for her husband and he didn't show up and by the time she made it to the hospital she gave birth to a daughter with severe brain damage. Harold then abandoned his family
