The figure with long hair that appeared at the beginning is Marika , proof is the arm rings worn by her and i think she was standing between what was the start of the erdtree before it became golden and shining

Most confusing lore in the video was figuring out how the phase 2 timer worked

To me, the scene at the start is Marika's ascension and where she became the vessel for the elden ring. Which would imply that the body she is taking the strands from (which to me look like rune arcs so it could be part of the elden ring) is the previous god whether that is Plaxidussax's god or the GEQ (the flesh looked kinda godskin like to me). I think what this trailer is showing is that Marika's ascension was more bloody and violent than we first think and that in order to create the appearance of perfection and order, she concealed all traces of a war "that could never be put to song" which included Messmer, who seemingly lead the purge.

Music at the end where the narrator talks about Miquella is quite bright and has a hopeful tone to it. Never heard from soft exploring this sort of feeling before, beautiful

Symbolism - She stands at the gateway of Blasphemy with stolen strands to create her Golden Order, and so too, was the Shadow born. Everything "good" she attempted to do, actually created an equal "evil". This goes along with what my theory has been, and what the game has been screaming at us in whispers....Marika was either incredibly stupid, vain, or pure evil...or all of the above. So, Miquella abandoned everything, even his Fate (St. Trina), but his Disciples, or the Disciples of the Light, continue on in his stead. Will you walk with them? Or, will you continue on your path of killing ANYONE and EVERYONE that was involved with Marika's reign. Perhaps, once again, we will get to choose our ending. Though...becoming Eldon Lord seems to have been of minor consequence, since literally nothing changes...and no one even recognizes you as the Elden Lord passed the ending. Either way...Messmer staring down that Lion Beast was awesome AF This entire thing was EPIC

In the beginning is probably Queen Merika, how she commited some sort of Seduction and Betrayal- and affair from wich gold was born.. and the golden strings she is ripping out and holding up are most likely the Eldenring somehow.

I think the "hair" being pulled on in that shot at the beginning is Marika pulling the veil over the Erdtree to create the shadow realm. To me it looks the same as the thorns you pass thru at the base of the Erdtree when you traverse the light & enter the Radagon/Elden Beast fight.

I feel sad for Malenia.. apparently if miquella gave up everything, his will, his flesh his fate. That means he had no intentions of coming back to the Lands between and Malenia could’ve been sitting at the haligtree for who knows how long if the tarnished didn’t show up.

The first scene is obviously marika The last scene is probably the tarnished Npcs that miyazaki talked about These characters are some of the ones we saw in the gameplay trailer Miyazaki said that there are other tarnished who are following Miquella's footsteps These guys must be the tarnished he talked about

My take is that when Marika (the person at the beginning of the trailer) arose to godhood two possibilities occurred. The first possibility is that her ascension spilt the world in two (The Lands Between and The Land of Shadows) either by natural means or by her power, that she locked away parts of the world she didn’t want. The second possibility is that when she ascended, a new mirror dimension was formed for whatever reason, like how Termina is a parallel world to Hyrule or something like that. Either way, the Lands of Shadows was then besieged by Messmer so that he could rule over it like Marika did in The Lands Between. So it seems that Miquella found out about Messmer being a tyrant so he gave up everything he had, his body, his power, even his side hussle as St. Trina, to put a stop to him.

When Marika holds up those golden strands, I can't stop to think that this is what becomes the Erdtree... Look at how the pillars of skinned death look like the trunk of the Erdtree and the gap in between looks like the middle of the part of the tree where the golden shine has faded and the cut-in that we enter when fighting Radagon...

Aight so here's my take: Miquella and St. Trina were twins born from an affair between Marika and an unknown god who resided in The Land of Shadow. "The seduction, and the betrayal" - "An affair from which gold arose (Miquella) - And so too was shadow born (St. Trina)" In order to cover up this affair, Marika concealed The Land of Shadow, and tasked Messmer - the eldest son of Radagon and Marika - with exterminating its people. The exact reasons for the affair and the cover-up arent immedietly clear, but Marika being power-hungery and doing something crazy isn't too far fetched imo. The opening scene I believe shows the birth of Miquella and St. Trina, the hair pulled from the corpse of the fallen god could be the rune with which they were born. Partly supporting this is that all children of Radagon have red hair - except Miquella. Everything further is more speculative, and under the assumption that the majority of this occured before the sealing of the rune of death, and true formation of The Golden Order. It is possible that St. Trina was against the formation of The Golden Order, and became The Gloam-Eyed Queen - wielding the rune of death to oppose The Golden Order. However, after her defeat by Maliketh, she fled to The Land of Shadow and was more or less erased from The Lands Between. (Loosely supported by conceptual parallels between Sleep and Death, as well as the vulnerability of Godskins to sleep.) Furthermore, given many similarities, I speculate that Melina is either the daughter of St. Trina, or a fragment of St. Trina - but not St. Trina herself. (perhaps similar to how Millicent is to Malenia) Finally, I think Marika is the BIG big bad - much worse than we think - and Radagon/The Greater Will oppose the Tarnished at the end of the game primarily to prevent her from gaining freedom and causing more destruction, rather than just trying to cling to control. Furthermore, Radagon may have fused with Marika in an attempt to control her/keep her from doing more damage after becoming aware of how evil she actually is. Speculation TL;DR: Miquella and St. Trina are twins born from an affair Marika had with an unknown god in The Land of Shadow. Messmer was tasked by Marika to help cover up the affair by leading a war to exterminate the people of the land of shadow. St. Trina is/was The Gloam-Eyed Queen, thus explaining her disapearance from The Lands Between. Marika is super evil.

The corpse that Marika took the strands from looks similar to the godskin and the surrounding skinned corpses adds to it be the GEQ.

That looks like Morgott on the stairs. His tattered cloak, and I think you can see the horns. As for the tree, the golden "wound" almost looks like the Unalloyed Needle. The way the veil is hanging, as well, reminds me of Merika's Bedchamber

All of my theory crafting: -I'm pretty confident that the Mesmer war involved crucible knights, or a more elaborate version of that, a crucible army, note the old crucible logo on the helmet of the one soldier, and they were fighting the Omen, along with whoever else. The lion thing has omen qualities, the impaled figures have omen qualities, the speared guy on the stairs looks like Morgott-ish Omen. Perhaps Mesmer represents the cruicible - with all the fire and everything to go with it, as a crucible implies heat and fire and melted metal and forging (which, forging you could turn into any number of metaphors in this game - forging the future, forging new life, the erdtree, new order etc.) This brings into question, well what about the dragons' era, to which I which argue came before the cruicible. -Miquella gave up his fate - similar to ranni. Denied the role of empyrean some how, probably killing 2 fingers again. -I like that the sites of grace are somehow signs of miquella, like the tarnished only returned once Miquella laid the path somehow, returning the guidance of grace to them. -The tarnished are working together in the lands between because none of them are chasing a role as lord/god/vessel. They are probably influenced by Miquella for a greater purpose. -The person at the beginning, taking the strands of grace from the *body?* is probably Marika. Her writs bangle matches from her images. This all happens after they mention Miquella "told of the beginning" or whatever the wording was. Then the scenes with Marika and the Mesmer Purge are all the past, and the part where it comes back to Miquella is present time (moreso). -I also think the place Marika is standing holding the strands above her head is the inside of the Erdtree where we fight Radagon, and she is looking out from there, you can see clouds outside. And the inside is kind of ethereal/endless looking like the scene from the radagon fight. Also, if it is true than potentially the erdtree was created from the bodies of those killed in this war/purge and was converted, or veiled somehow to appear as a tree and was then figuratively given the status as the symbol/foundation of the golden order, as a nod to the atrocities that were committed in order to bring it to fruition. I personally have felt that Marika has always had a dark secret and somehow she helped with the night of black knives to allow Ranni, or whoever else (Miquella) to undo what she has done, and Radagon is more of a guard, that tries to stop you from furthering the plot, which is why he attacks you when you enter Marika's room in the tree. He's the poster boy for the golden order pretty much, aside from Godwyn who was set up and already dead, so it would make sense that he would die fighting to protect the order, and stop Marikas plan to undo what she had done. Also, side thought - Burning the erdtree would then be burning the bodies of all of these people who have died. Maybe theres something to that, when you consider the rune of undeath being removed and maybe the bodies are of those who live in death and it is their eternal plight that gives the erdtree/golden order power... -It looks like she is pulling the grace strands from something that looks very similar to godskin, maybe a Godskin Bairn or whatever those trinkets are. Alluding to the possibility of some Melina story if that is the case, and/or the gloam eyed queen. -If it is threads of grace that Marika is removing, and if it is from a Godskin Bairn (or whatever else) it would make sense that this was the birth of grace, as only something so pure and untainted could be a source of grace (in the holy sense). -Perhaps this is Melina's child or something, which would explain her goal to burn the Erdtree. Also she doesnt have memories of her life, so maybe those were wiped somehow and Marika "repurposed" her to this end. And once we burned the Erdtree and killed Radagon/Marika/Elden Beast it reset everything and she regained her memories (frenzied flame ending). -Miquella divested his flesh so the cocoon being is likely a husk of Miquella or something else entirely. Mogh's dynasty would have never came to be as he had planned. -"And so too was shadow born" - seems to imply that Marikas actions (whatever it is she's doing) cause a rift/split between the two lands. And the land of shadow became obscured (probably intentionally by Marika) and separated/ostracized/banished, as obviously whatever event happened there was something she/the golden order wanted to brush under the rug and forget about. Which also has implications that Marika may be the "bad guy" and Mesmer was actually trying to save the lands or stop her at least. But this information is lost to history so far. Also, the phrase "And so too was shadow born" has implications figuratively, highlighting the contrast of the brightness of gold, the holy light, pure light, etc. and the Shadow Lands which are now quite literally in the shadow of the Golden Order, or rather the shadow cast by the golden light, that obscures the part of their history that they wanted to forget - the land of shadow. -Perhaps Mesmer, who was potentially a good guy, or at least not the bad guy, or otherwise was seen as bad by Marika, causing her to commit an atrocity in order to take her place as vessel/god - Perhaps Mesmer was the previous God, or Elden lord, and the body Marika is pulling grace threads from was the previous God. And then those lands were shunned and hidden away as an attempt to wipe their order from history, and so that people wouldnt remember and then, over time, eventually forget what Marika had done and eventually her order would become the "Gold Standard" no pun intended, for what people would eventually come to accept as the "right path". We have seen this many times in our own history with religion, and the "new order" replacing the old by force or war, or threat etc. Think when "the one god" religion was imposed in ancient rome, and old gods became saints, and pagan holidays were replaced with new celebrations, and then obviously this went haywire and we now have 203945 versions of Christianity and Judaism, and old Catholicism, and all those dating back to the Greeks and beyond. EDIT: I changed my view on Mesmer. I will leave the old bullet points just because they're fun lore diving. But I am gonna go ahead and accept that he is Marikas son. And he probably purged the land of shadow at her request in order to set her up for godhood. But I question his motives now after being abandoned. Even if it was discussed beforehand amongst the two. I will suggest that his mind state is twisted and demented after all this time. If not then I would guess that Miquella has convinced him that he should actually help in his plan to remove the golden order. I know "we?" fight him in the 1st trailer but I don't think it's final. Maybe a test or a misunderstanding. Also, just a few quick things - I know I didn't mention the bodies at the root to the tree. I think that's implied but them being "part" of the roots supports my theory that they became the tree. And perhaps it's their blood that fed the tree, which is why Miquella attempted to do the same with his own blood at the Haligtree. Also I think there will be a plot twist. I think Miquellas plan to dethrone the golden order for his own age, will seem like the right thing to do until we finish. Then we will realize that either he has insidious motives, or he was just wrong. Also we will have been compelled by him to do so, either by his charm or his godly power, whichever it is that causes him to be able to compel people, and we will realize that at the end. Maybe we will even get a choice to deny him and "fix" things another way. Perhaps from a side quest line or actually Rannis quest will continue. Or Melina's if you took the frenzied flame ending. I also think it would be cool if your decisions in the base game effect the dlc ending. Like what I want to try is to do a run where I finish every side quest. Like rannis, Millicent (maybe to a certain point then stop), don't kill Melania, do Melina's quest and burn the erdtree as the frenzied flame THEN use the needle from Millicents quest, (do you have to kill Melania for this? I'm blanking now. Either way, get the needle remove the madness from yourself, finish goldmasks quest, and then finish the old game with rannis ending because I believe her and miquellas goals are the same, or even that they are working together. This will avoid the frenzied flame ending which may still (in the story) cause Melina to regain her memories and go full gloam. And then leave this ending as is until the dlc. Because the og endings are just so inconsequential that I can't believe there isn't one that effects dlc outcome. /rant

I think what's interesting with the opening with Marika, is the object she's pulling these hairs out of, reminiscent of godskin - perhaps having some relation to the Gloam-Eyed Queen?

That opening shot is definitely Marika. Also 10:20 those are the bodies that make up the "Lion dancer" as the shot right before that was Messmer fighting the Lion dancer.

The arm with the bracelet pulling out the gold strands is Maricka. It's her bracelet as seen on her when hanging from the Elden ring

The beginning shot is of Merika for sure and IMO it looks like the bodies that are piled up are being used to form the great tree and might be the beginning of Merika's golden order because you see the golden light in the center and the dark sky on either side of the tower of bodies that I believe become the great tree.

Is heavily implied that the whole war thing started BEFORE Miquella went to the Shadow Realm. So that person in the beginning is probably Marika, other than the body not looking like a child's. (Also same bracelets and arm band). About the debris, you can kinda see it becoming/forming part of the Shadow Three.

You think Marika taking those strands from that being could be her taking the guidance of grace from someone?

Hey Jake just wanna start off by saying I love your videos and the content. I had a theory about the beginning of this video that I haven’t seen anywhere mentioned yet and just wanted to throw it at the wall to see what sticks. It appears to be Marika in the beginning of the trailer but slightly different. What if this was Marika literal Shadow. Maliketh, returning the rune of destined death after defeating the gloam eyed queen. The hair specifically stands out as being reminiscent of Maliketh. Anyway love the content!

Personally my theory is that Marika stoll the golden thread/strands from either the Gloomed Eyed Queen or the Crucible to have the foundations to create the erdtree. But in order to create the tree she needed power. So she committed an 'affair' to do so, wether thats betraying an individual or seducing someone to allow her to birth a son (Messmer). Once Messmer grows older I feel that she intentionally manipulated him to be his puppet after granting him the stollen power of blood flame from formless mother to lay seige on the kingdom and use the giant wicker men to transport and stack bodies as a structure base for the erdtree (where Marika is holding the golden strands in between the two body pillars. After Marikas ambitions are complete she backstabs the 'dark hero' messmer and leaves him behind while she grows her kingdom. I feel that this foundation creates the core beliefs that the lands between follow: worship all that is golden and that your body is linked via the roots of the great tree (like the bodies in the catacomb boss rooms)

To me, that at the beginning is Marika victorious over the Gloam Eyed Queen. We see gloam colour on the side when she poses with the golden threads. The womb thing looks fiber-y and it looks like godskin cloth to me

Maybe that’s why we can only interact with malena at sites of grace, because she is Miquella and they are his sites of grace, so it’s the only way she can communicate with us from the shadow realm

So either the "main game" is a dream - the "shadow lands" is a dream - Or Miquella is doing some sort of time thingy where he is the one who made Marika to give birth to himself (time travel shenanigans!) or.. Miquella is "grace".

Here are some of my thoughts about the trailer. 1. When the narrator states " and so to was shadow born" could allude to not only the creation of the golden order but also the creation of maliketh as it was stated before in the main game that the plucking of desitned death brought about the golden order and marika needed a vessel to place destined death. Maliketh is also her shadow. 2. It could also mean the weaving together of the elden ring from the strands of grace and runes that marika joined together. 3. The betrayal could be a coup d etat that marika instigated to brought forth a war that will lead to alot of death and bloodshed needed to offer up to the formation of the erde tree or its creation. She may have had to isolate true death to propagate the cycle of rebirth via the erde tree. 4. The lion dancer seems to be a symbol of the crucible because of its physical traits. Marika like she did before orchestrated a genocide to put forth the necessary ingridients to put her plan into fruition.

Those are our new sites of grace.

Helphens steeple description proves the dying into the shadowlands theory. "The lamplight is similar to grace in appearance, only it is said that it can only be seen by those who met their death in battle"

The lion dancer isnt the aggressor in that shot. Messmer is laying waste to the old order the crucible. So the lion is just fighting back to stop him. I think anyway. Also i think the betrayal is Marika seducing impregnating thr gloam eyed queen as Radagon and she used that baby to create the golden order using those gilden hairs shes taking out of the pregnant belly. In the last trailer the woman in the painting was pregnant. Could be Marika has a tein sje betrayed to. Since twins run in families and she herself created Miquella and Melania.

I think St Trina is the result of him abandoning his fate and also explains why we never meet her. She's probably literally asleep in the shadowlands and only able to extend her spiritual body (Malenia) out into the lands between

if you freeze it at 9:03 Marika and the person holding the hair strands has the same armbands and bracelets on, I assume that is Marika and not Miquella.

I wonder if Miqula or any other NPC will have different interactions with the Tarnished if he inherited the frenzied flame

i theorize that the group of tarnished we see are not player tarnished but rather a group of npcs that are following the same path as us

Additional note: If this is a birthing ritual we see in the beginning it could be similar to the one that Daedicar partook in. Both would have resulted in red snake children, Rya and Messmer, so there might be something there.

My theory is Marika stole from the womb of the gloam eyed queen to win and create the Elden ring. I believe the gloam eyed queen is in the painting next to the old man.

I think the person at the beginning is Radagon and I think what he is reaching into is the god Placidusax was the Elden Lord for. The strands are likely Radagon stealing the pieces of the Elden Ring he wants from the old god. This would explain the different Elden Ring seen in Farum Azula. I think the moment we see is when Marika is created in Radagon. He made an Elden Ring WITH the Rune of Death and then SHE would later remove it and hide it from him with Maliketh. Maliketh feels betrayed by Marika when we fight him likely because Radagon has at some point tried to take the rune back as Marika, making him think he's been betrayed by her (Radagon could've been the one with the connection to the black knifes that people ascribe to Marika). I think Marika then shattered the Elden Ring to keep Radagon from reforming it. Radagon pulls Godfrey back pretending to be Marika to fight us and then fights us himself at the end because we have the runes he needs to remake his version of the Elden Ring with the Rune of Death now free for him to re-include. The Greater Will even fights us because it has been backing Radagon the whole time while Marika has been getting in the way, also explaining why Marika is crucified and only released in the form of Radagon. This can even be seen in their children. Marika's first 2 sons are cursed as omen and Godwyn is her only "true" demigod child we know of. Radagon leaves and has 3 children all extremely gifted and powerful. When Marika has children with Radagon (which I think she is the one that wanted to, and did, conceive the twins) they are powerful but cursed. Marika's only known "successful" child is then killed in a plot by the children of Radagon (and if you agree he is actually the only connected to the black knives like I said before, this is way crazier).

The corpse at the beginning make me think of the Godskinners and how they would hunt people down to kill and skin them. None of the corpse look to have skin on that scene. There is also the gloam esc clouds with the purplish hue and the probable timing that this is depicting Marika's accession, that the Gloam Eyed Queen is either part of that scene, or maybe it's the woman holding that spiral spear looking weapon similar to those from Mohg's palace. Also going with the lines that Gold was born, but so to was Shadow, I think what happened is that the Lands Between were created, and the previous lands BECAME the land of shadow I'm still not entirely sure that Messmer is Marika's son, thought he probably is, he could be a brother, and him referencing "mother" could be to someone else, perhaps they are the children of the Gloam Eyed Queen, and Marika stole those strands of grace or gold from the queen, or from someone that looks pregnant. Either way, as a ploy for a power grab from whoever the god is at that specific moment. also not sure if that Markia we see here is female or male but they don't show so we won't know until we play. I think that's intentional and maybe related to Miquella also having that potential shift. For all we know, maybe crossing between realms in certain ways gender-bends someone (doubt it'll happen to us for whatever reason).

Just a random theory, maybe Radagon was the god in the lands of shadow, the reason messmer has red hair and the reason he almost had no backstory where he came from in ER

Pretty sure this dlc is confirming that Marika is pure evil. After all, Gideon did uncover that she wanted everyone to suffer unto eternity.
