A shining example of why public assistance does not work. Once people are on the dole, they get addicted, they feel entitled, they make demands. Completely forgetting that the assistance they're receiving is out of charity, and that we don't "owe them" a penny. Not everyone on assistance does this, but far too many do. Just gross.

Hey Jeff, Great story and with a lot of impact to me personally. I started helping a young man to work (just a little older than me evan) hoping I could help out... Long story short, I was taken advantage of. I did what I could, but for several months I received no compensation as agreed upon for a few bucks a day. Eventually I learned how difficult this situation can be and decided to cut off my new found "friend" and advised I could no longer help. You've made it easier to understand my frustration and hold me to my true fealings, thanks!

One of the rules I live by that was ingrained into me when I was young is this: If I wouldn't say it to the persons face, don't say it at all. Even in a situation like yours my parents would have made me go talk to her as soon as they knew how I felt about it. I'm not saying you are bad people for what happened (she's the jerk here), but I'm saying for me it's the right thing to do (most of the time). I've been known to do this when I really shouldn't have and have had to climb out of a few shit holes that I dug myself. But as they say, with age comes wisdom and that's what I think this story is about. Thanks again Jeff!

Dude, been there, done that, learned my lesson. Good to share, starting to skip payments is a lack of respect and as you said, taking advantage of people worse of. These days, I would have dropped her 2nd payment missed, she knew exactly what shes doing. Lol I wouldn't be embarrassed, its was the truth. She should have been embarrassed for just taking and never giving back.

The same thing happened to me. An old guy lived 3 doors down. He's in his 80's and never had kids and no relatives so I offered to cut his lawn for $15 which is half what I normally charge. I was 16 at the time and felt sorry for him because he was alone. Eventually he started asking me to take him to the food store every other week and I did it for free. Then he started asking for favors every weekend, the bank, Thrift Store, doctors office etc. Never did he ever offer gas money but to be fair I never asked for any. He had an old Pontiac Bonneville that he kept tagged and insured but never drove and I thought he would give it to me or sell it at a low price for helping him since I was using my parents spare car. One day the car was gone and I asked what happened to it and he told me that he sold it to the guy at the bottom of our street for $500. The next time he asked me for a ride I told him to ask the guy down the street. He actually went down and asked him and the guy flat out said no and resold the car for $1500 the next week. He asked me for a ride again and I told him my parents didn't want me to use their car anymore and that I need to save up and find a used car to buy. I also mentioned that I only had $500 and couldn't find anything in that price range. He never thanked me and stopped talking to me after that.

I've been in the same boat. Moved to Long Island and moved to an apartment complex with an older lady next door. I did tons of stuff for her. The week I was moving out she was demanding me to remove the apartment complex's air conditioner unit from the wall. I told her I can't do that, if something happened I'd be liable (living on the 2nd floor and possibly dropping the wall unit out of the wall.) The day I left she acted so pissed at me I couldn't believe it. That's why I never take any money when I help people. They make it seem like they are actually helping you out, not the other way around.

10:34 "and I'm like ah fuck!" great vid Jeff. Ms. B sounds a lot like a manager I used to have at an auto dealership. She was the detailing manager and I was a detailer, I worked for minimum wage and busted my ass there. When I first started she was nice and seemed like a level headed person, but as the months went by I realized she was not who she seemed to be. My real problems started when she began to take advantage of my kindness (do not mistake my kindness for weakness). I was too scared of the consequences if I spoke up and said something that I would later regret, but I wish I had because she was a bitter little witch. I got out of that place quick and never looked back, and it was one of the best moves I ever made. No more stress.

Great story, had pretty much the same thing happen to me when I got into horses. Deal was he needed some work done around his farm and I'd help out and could keep my horse out there free. Long story short pretty much the same thing, very demanding and eventually got to the point where I didn't have time to spend training my horse because I was doing shit for him. Then the last straw was hearing about him chasing my horse around with a stick and bucket for fun so found another place. It cost a bit for boarding but moved her out the next weekend haven't talked to him since.

You crack me up in a big way. I have had similar experiences however. You are right about speaking up. A whole lot of ill will came to you by not being straight with the person. Unfortunately, many times I have seen the truth in the saying "No good deed goes unpunished". With church, volunteering, in the work place, etc. You just have to be able to speak up the very first time it starts to slip into that bad place. If not ,it will never end or even get worse. And the longer it goes the harder it is to say something. I too have talked badly about someone after speaking to them on the phone. Especially on a cell phone. I've cursed and name called, or said to myself or someone with me what I wanted to say to the person but did not have the balls to say directly. Afterwards I discover the cell phone did not hang up. And the person heard what I said. Oops.

I had a job for a neighbour of weeding (which the weeds kept on growing back), mowing lawn and raking up leaves and sticks I spent 2 days there pulling shit loads of prickles out and we made a deal of $50 and I did an excellent job and the weeds never came back and I even swept up all the back yard. It was all because she had to leave her rental house and needed to clean up the backyard. In the end when it came to paying me at the end she only gave me $30 and at the age of 13 I was really disappointed and didn't have the guts to speak up.

When I was in middle school my dad would drive me to school everyday. One year in particular the winter was colder and there was a lot of snow for the area. After a few days we noticed another kid who went to my school and walked there everyday. I barely knew the kid and he was probably a sophomore or junior in high school (my school was 6th to 12th grade). Since the weather was so bad my dad just pulled over and offered him a ride. My dad's truck was a two door pickup and since I was the younger one, I offered to sit in the back even though it was uncomfortable, and I was fine with that. This went on for about week until this kid started telling me to sit in the backseat instead. He wasn't overly rude or anything like that but he told me what to do when it was my property and I didn't have to do anything. My dad took him to school that day but drove past him everyday after. It's a similar situation and it actually kinda shows just how childish the woman is in the story.
@ChrisC30

Something to take away: You didn't talk sh*t. You thought you were having a private talk with your father. You were taken advantage of by an abusive person, and finally had enough, and needed to vent. She almost certainly didn't care that you said it. She'd have likely heard it before, since she went on using others. You and your father were not the first. Sometimes, feeling bad is a weakness that lets predatory people get to you.
@siloettee
@siloettee 9 лет назад
It sounds like she went from grateful to ungrateful. Much like any relationship it always starts off good, and then one person who was originally humble becomes expectant. And you knew that from you feelings, when you went from feeling good because you were helping her to feeling like its no longer a good deed, its an obligation and a chore. I think you have the right to feel resentment. You have the right to vent and feel your feelings. And yes, as bad as it is to get caught talking crap about someone, if the things you were saying about her were true, then there is very little to apologize about. If you have anything to apologize about its not being true to yourself. Its the manner in which she found out your feelings. But not the feelings themselve.

Despite driving up and down the east coast 4x and moving her in she became paranoid demanding, insulting and mean. She is now in assisted living. The rest of the family grew tired of her games.
