Jerry Brainum breaks down the realities behind reported side effects in creatine.
Creatine is a powerful and effective supplement for helping to increase muscle growth with very little and few side effects. In fact, it's somewhat surprising how helpful this supplement can be without being a PED. Of course, this is if you train effectively while using the supplement. However, there have been some reported side effects that might make some lifters stray away from this effective tool. Even worse, there are some reports of more dangerous side effects that might make the supplement seem scary. Are they legit?
Jerry Brainum breaks down the reality behind creatine side effects - and what you can do to reduce them.

I'm very pro-regulation and extremely cautious generally. But in clearly outlier cases like these, it is entirely possible that either the substance (creatine in this case) had nothing to do with the subject's problem, or the subject was already predisposed to the problem and the substance just happened to be the first stimulus that made it visible.

I knew a horse trainer years ago, he gave his horses 5 grams several hours before a race, 2 grams after, only on race day. Keep in mind that the horse weighed 1300 lbs. and this jug, or dosing made a huge difference in performance. 5 grams per day has become somewhat of a standard amongst those who know its benefits. Don’t go beyond that, and do cycle it. Take a week off occasionally while switching up your training, then begin again. Also, take it with your pre workout drink, an hour or so before or, in your protein shake after within the 15 minute window, plus 12 oz. water or better yet, coconut water to replenish electrolytes, not Gatorade. The embolism likely was caused by artificial sugars such as erythitol. Part of the reason they are so sweet is because they are sharp to the point that it strongly stimulates the sweet sense on your tongue. Small doses can be okay but in high amounts, it can hit your blood vessels and cause blood clots. This goes for sucralose and others. It is why a lot of healthy seeming people that go to the gym die of heart attacks or have strokes. Too high levels of artificial sweetners. If you are taking a preworkout that has it, it can cause blood clots if you overtake it.

The reason you should drink plenty of fluids when taking creatine is because creatine causes water to be retained in the muscles. Therefore, the body needs more liquid. When you stop taking creatine, the muscle shrinks a little because the liquid is excreted again. Not completely but something.
@aleksacerovic6586
@aleksacerovic6586 Год назад
Creatine as I understood has many functions: 1) Looks-> Retains water in the muscles (about 70% of muscle is water), so they look bigger 2) Strength-> Retains water in your cells (intercellular fluid retention), cells can absorb more protein while being hydrated. If you have low water intake you can make your blood vessels with less water, he said that in this video, because one amount of water deltaV is now being retained by muscles and cells -> you can get clot, but if you drink so little water it can happen that your cells are even dehydrated, he mentioned that... Someone correct me if you think I'm wrong

I have one question: Considering that the boody creates creatine by itself, when taking creatine suplements will our bodies still create creatine or will it stop/reduce? This question may be important to study because it may be in everybody's interest to be sure that their bodies will continue to create the normal ammounts of creatine by itself after stopping a long time period of taking creatine suplements. Are there any studies on this?

@@roadstar499 Your wrong my friend very wrong that’s old news. it’s not and overkill your wrong you need to research more. Recent studies disprove that. I’m 70 years old weight 198 with 17-1/2” arm. Learn your facts; Creatine is a safe, well-studied supplement. Studies in a variety of people have shown no detrimental health effects of taking creatine supplements in doses up to 4-20 grams per day for 10 months to 5 years (19Trusted Source, 20Trusted Source, 21Trusted Source). That said, it’s commonly thought that taking these supplements may harm kidney health. However, in a study in people with type 2 diabetes, a condition that may impair kidney function, supplementing with 5 grams of creatine per day for 12 weeks did not harm kidney health (22Trusted Source).

I take electrolytes and taurine at the same time I take creatine. PS: This would be fasted, before my workout, in the late morning (as "lunch.") I may start splitting the dose before and after (with my post-workout shake.) I'm not a "body builder," per se, but just looking to add lean mass and burn fat with kettlebells, steel clubs and resistance training. Otherwise, I just walk a lot (which I don't consider a workout.)

I don’t believe that creatine even if it’s minor disfunctional is the cause for this, reason being my brain is also affected almost more than the liver and this points nowhere except covid 19 I suffered.What is your take on this one

@jameskelly6479
@jameskelly6479 Год назад
The trouble with that is you might not get the full effect from doing it that way because your body never gets the max amount at one time. Because it is using it up before you get it all at once. Your exercise time is important to the amount that is in your body at the time to reach the effect that is need when you're pushing your muscles. Doing that after you work out might help with the healing more than before. You need the max amount of creatine that increases the fluid being pushed into the muscle when under stress max load. The older you are the more you can get from creatine because your body slows down from making it for yourself. Just trying to help a little.

I always found that just with water had quite a granular taste and it didn’t seem to settle too well. I started splitting it to a few grams with fruit cordial in a pint of water around lunchtime and then on workout days I’d have few more grams with a pint of half OJ and half water. If not a workout day I’d still have the same drink then go out for a walk- seemed to settle in my stomach nicely if drunk before some sort of activity/ work. Also yes to drinking extra water, was up to at least 5 pints a day!

If you are taking creatine daily you need to watch out with how much caffeine and other supplements you take. I currently am learning the hard way. I was dry scooping creatine pretty much daily along with taking pre work out and coffee every other day. I started notice major fatigue the last couple weeks and one night my left foot swelled up. I was starting to have kidney problems. Long story short daily creatine along with other caffeinated supplements is not good for you.
