Question: I am selling around 60,000 units/yr of my inexpensive product. It's profitable because of the volume but unit-level profitability isn't very high. The factory (China-based) has a defect rate of ~1.5%. I am stuck checking every unit by hand because if I didn't I'd be getting 1000 bad reviews per year which would sink the product. The low unit profitability and relatively low defect rate means the economics of inspection don't work -- they'd have to check every single unit, and it would eat the margin. Do you have any tips to get manufacturers to up their QA game? Some orders are better than others, it really is about the diligence of the worker that is assembling the units which is something I feel like I have very little control over. Any advice on how to approach my factory salesperson about this is appreciated!
