This is the first of a series of discussions on honing. As in this video, the Honing Vlog content will not be start to finish honing. This video does not depict a full bevel set, only a discussion on the topic.
This was an idea of a subscriber who is new to honing. It meant to answer some questions on technique and terminology we may take for granted or assume is understood. This content is meant to be a more detailed discussion to the honing basics. Any experienced honer please feel free to comment with any additional information you care to share.
This will not replace my normal honing content. My idea will be to release one of these per month. That will give me time to receive feedback and address questions and concerns.
Thank you very much.
Eric

These are fantastic videos that help a lot for beginners and people who do things different. Another video that helped me a lot was two on fixing geometry problems. That comes in handy for razors that aren’t flat. Oh, testing flatness too.

This has been one of the most helpful videos on this subject that I have seen so far. Thank you for the very practical and approachable wisdom you share on the art. I'm a licensed barber, formally trained in a barber college for two-thousand hours and have over 30 years of experience in the profession of hair-cutting. However, I, have never mastered the art of honing razors even though I practiced honing vigorously in barber college and a little thereafter. I'm now venturing again to master this art because I would really like to bring some of my estate sale straight razor finds into shaving condition. Ultimately, I would like to put into regular use, a cache of straight razor into my servicing routines at the barber shop, reducing my reliance on replaceable straight razors. I think that I have gotten a few blades into range of fair shaving function but far from what I perceive to be possible based on videos like yours. This all makes me wonder just how many barbers can actually do this. It seems a most onerous undertaking but I really want to be that barber in modern times who can indeed keep straight razors in optimal shaving condition. This had to be a significant part of a barber's work when he had to rely on traditional straight razors to shave. An think of the home-shavers and do-it-yourselfers who, before the safety razors, developed this skill-set to give themselves shaves on a regular basis. I have ruined a lot of stones and razors over the years trying to hone a razor. I also now realize that the preparation and training I got from barber college was rather inadequate for actually mastering the art of honing: there was, I now surmise, no real expectation of my instructors for success because the training did not even come close to bringing me into the realm of mastery. Without the type of wisdom and insight you are sharing, I would could forever expect to be frustrated demoralized by failure. What I now perceive to be the actual learning curve for success in honing with consistency makes my barber college honing training seem a bit gimmicky.

Well I am glad my videos helped. There is some good instruction out there. I hope you can find your way, it just takes a lot of honing and shaving off of your edges. That tells you everything. Thanks for your kind words.

29:42 Such Excellent advice on all aspects of bevel setting,.... (i use diamond plate for correction of frowns, and a higher grit stone for bevels with no visible damage , plus your sharpie pen and a jewellery loupe .) your best advice you gave is to keep a note on each razor ! ...great advice and visuals .👏 👌.

I don’t disagree on using a diamond plate. But I think when a fella is new and don’t know what he is doing yet, your asking for trouble. As a person grows as a honer, absolutely use all the tools in the box.

I am not the most eloquent speaker. I probably miss spoke, I think that the one. I am not a big fan of it. It’s the little one on the base.

I've been using a straight edge With disposable Razor for about nine years I'm gonna jump in to. A Regular straight razor. My razor is gonna be Brand new and ready to use. When i start honing the razor What grit should I use for my stones? And should I buy a finishing Stone? Thanks And if you have any recommendation For a good stone And should I use tape

If you get a new one, get one from a vender that will hone it for you. Not all new razors are truly shave ready. As for keeling it up, there or many options, pastes like Chrox or Diamond paste. You will need a strop for sure and a separate strop if you want to use paste on a strop. As for what stones as a minimum. I could recommend these. Naniwa Arata (Amazon) 1K,3k,5k,10k recommended. Minimum - 2k, 5k, 10k I can shave off the Arata 10k. Shapton Pro 1.5k, 3k, 5k, 8k recommend Minimum 1.5k, 5k, 8k minimum I do not the shave from the shapton 8K. You may want to substitute the shapton 8k for a Shapton Rockstar 10k. Shapton rockstar is a very Popular set right now. But I don’t not know enough about them to recommend. Learn in synthetics first, and become good at it before attempting a natural.

I had no time ti see all but the first image was shocking. You put a razor on the stone in an instable equilibrium! Sorry 😮 I couldn't see more! Perhaps the price of each razor is 20 dollars ? Yes it's a gold dollar many professional refuse to hone😢

I guess I don’t understand what you’re saying. Instable equilibrium? But, you are free to not watch if you don’t like what you see. Have a nice weekend.

It’s the sink in my workshop. If prefer you look at pretty clean sinks, I can see my wife will let me hone in the house. Most of the man shit is done outside.

Is that your contribution to the problem at hand? I got the cross contamination thing, besides that did not notice anything wrong with the sink 😂
