Yes, I shave with a 1k edge in this video; the star of the show is another Greaves Wedge turned into a wicked shaver.

0:56 Saw some tugging there and wasn't impressed............until you said that was off a 1.5k stone. Also at 1:14 I see you've decided to continue honing with circles ON YOUR FACE, now that's brave. lol.
@KeithVJohnson1
@KeithVJohnson1 4 года назад
Yah, don't want to shave like that everyday but if I had to I could. Getting a bevel to that stage is critical for maximum edge development. I believe most new guys underhone, so this is a good benchmark. If you're not there' you know instantly - the amount of tugging from an undercooked bevel just plain hurts.

@@KeithVJohnson1 I've got one of those 1.5k Shaptons on the way right now. I have been bevel setting (more like touching up) on a 5 -8k combo but have just finished restoring a Wade & Butcher near wedge and it needs a "real" bevel set so needed the 1.5k. Should be a beast when I have it all honed up. I'll be doing 1.5k, 5k, 8k, 12k Shapton followed by 1, (0.5 CrOx) 0.3,(0.1 FeOx) and 0.05 micron film. Your vids have been good preparation for taking on one of the more difficult honing jobs, a smiling near wedge 14/16ths W&B chopper. Cheers.

Learn something new every time I reference back!!👍👍 Without your vids most of my scales would be epoxy peices of shit, at the pivot obviously.. Now I change my pins and wedges out with confidence, cut my blanks out, mind you I have to reference back almost every time, but I get it done.. Thanks!!

Another worthy the time spend to watch video of yours ... giving life back to a good old blade. Your view on the pressure applied issue is given at an exemplary level - a reference for new honers. Also the materials - colors (scales, pins, wedge, shims) chosen to escort the honed "Diva" are an appropriate choice. Though, I was expecting to see the whole blade polished, i.e. even in between the bevel and the spine. Still, I recognize that this would take much more time and effort - at this stage it is not mandatory. But, I think, such a well pampered blade deserves it - in the future.
@KeithVJohnson1

Thank you George, I apprecitate you taking the time to comment! yes, to polish the middle of the blade would take a considerable effort.... and time also.

Amazing video Keith! Extremely helpful, educational and inspirational! I think there are a lot of guys out there who are scared to unpin and re-pin a razor, myself included. Would love it if you would do a video geared specifically toward how to do that in detail. I have a Ralf Aust that I neglected and there is some rust by the pin. I would love to be able to take care of that myself without sending it out. I know you would be able to shed some very helpful light on how to take care of the issue such as that. Keep the amazing videos coming!!
@KeithVJohnson1
@KeithVJohnson1 7 лет назад
That is a good topic for sure. But pinning is hard to capture. My first video, the one where I restored that big W&B, has a section on pinning. The thing is this though, you don't want to learn on your RA, chances are you'll break the scales or scar them or something. Best thing to do is to get a bunch of cheapo practice razors to start off with. There are soooo many different things that can go wrong or get in the way that it would be hard for me to show a good enough cross section of the possibilities. I will probably do more restoration type videos, and I may consider adding some additional focus on the unpinning/pinning portion though.

I kinda like the way it looks. Can’t wait to buy my first restoration blade. At least I’ll have to really learn patience and understanding how much the stones actually take down. Can’t wait.

Is it bone scales? Did you choose the shapton 1.5 over a chosera or others for a particular reason or just cause :) Great vid Keith. Very nice resto. Dunno if i have the touch to shave off a 1k bevel set

Probably the best vid you've done yet. I personally don't give a damn what it looks like either, because who's going to see it? My wife? I also notice the great respect you pay to it when you shave with such a bad-ass edge. Being reckless will only bring blood. Very nicely done.

Keith what whetstone would you recommend for a beginner in straight razor honing? I have a couple of straight razor that now require more than just stropping. Will appreciate your kind reply.
@KeithVJohnson1
@KeithVJohnson1 7 лет назад
Generally speaking, I don't make recommendations. My first suggestion though, is to not buy any stones at all until you do a lot of reading and a lot of video watching on the subject.
@mariuszadamczyk7766
@mariuszadamczyk7766 7 лет назад
Keith V. Johnson I do follow very scrupulously all of your videos as well as others. I even admire your having so much heart and passion for the given stones you hone at. However, the Japanese wet stones seem to be hardly available for sales here in Europe... at any rate, I value your work and shall keep on following until I figure something out concerning honing.
@KeithVJohnson1
@KeithVJohnson1 7 лет назад
I would guess that the majority of people start off with a few synthetic stones and a few practice razors to hone with. I started with Norton hones and a Coticule. Jnats are lovely hones to own and work with, and there are vendors in Europe who carry them.

@@KeithVJohnson1I have seen some people recommend flattening a razor to “fix” its geometry so that the razor makes four points of contact when resting on a flat surface. What are your thoughts on that approach? Are there any situations where you think that approach could make sense? Frowns?
@KeithVJohnson1
@KeithVJohnson1 10 месяцев назад
I've never needed to flatten a razor to hone it. I tend to not make a big deal out of honing and just go with the flow of the existing geometry. Every razor is different so I can't make broad generalizations about what to do or not to do unless I have the actual razor in question in my hands. As for what other people do, it's up to them. There are a million paths to the top of the mountain. For me, It's easier for me to stay focused on what I do.

Hi Keith. I've honed wedge blades like this before and to be honest it was a pain as with such hone wear they stick to the stones like glue! How did you get round this?

Impossible to guess why you’re struggling. maybe try adjusting pressure, and cleaning the stone of swarf and/or thinning the slurry.
