In this video Jay goes over the straight razor as well as the shavette. What is the better tool to shave with. Thats the question we get all the time. There are pros and cons to shaving with ether tool. The straight razor will give you a great shave problem is it can't be used in a professional environment. The straight razor also requires a certain type of skill to sharpen it. On the other hand the shavette takes disposable double edge razors! Hope this helps you guys out on your straight razor shaving journey enjoy.

I use both but prefer shavettes now. I love that I can just pop in a laser sharp blade whenever I feel a tug. I use a Feather AC SS. Lovely shaver! The strop doesn’t sharpen the razor. It only aligns the microscopic edge. The stones will sharpen.

Something that confused me in the video. Do you need to sharpen the blade every 7 shaves, or strop it every 7 shaves. From what I understand, stripping should take place before every shaves (potentially after as well), but a sharpening should last at least a couple months. (Let’s say 3 shaves a week, for 2 months =24 shaves, way above 7 shaves) Neither seems accurate with 7 shaves count

Great video I learned a lot from it. I just have a hard time shaving with a Shavette. I can shave with a straight razor and not cut myself but with the other I look like I have been in a cat fight. I feel like the Shavette is just to thin and that's why i'm cutting myself. O and fyi tuberculosis is a airborne disease it is contracted through air pathogens. It was HIV/AIDS that they were worried about. It wasn't just the blade but the strop that gets nasty. I read somewhere they took a strop from a barbershop that was still using them and did some test it came back with some nasty stuff on it.

I use my Sedef shavette as I saw guys do in turkey, new blade in, shavete and lighter on in one hand and lemon cologne water in other hand, 3x spray on open flame on one side and 3x on other side, desinfected i guess. After shaving clean and rinse shavete, dry and untill next time. No rash, no skin problems. Oh yeah, and Perma Sharp blades, its not an add but thats some tested good blades.

Nice and comprehensive comparison! Only when you show the strop, the movement you make is not what beginners (and i guess experienced) should do. Turning the razor over the spine instead of the cutting edge to strop prevents from accidentally cutting into and damaging your strop.

I think shavette is one of the best razors in the world with replacement blades not only sanity but it gives perfect close shave where straight razors you need to do 2 pass to get close shave..i have 3 staright razors from dovo and 2 shavette razors mostly i use shavette because it feels so good and comfortable. I would say shavette razors are static .

After DE should one go for shavette or straight razor? Is it true that learning curve is higher for the shavette? What's better for hard facial hair and sensitive skin?

My grandpa still has his father in law’s somewhere tucked away in his closet and he showed it to me last week. I’ve shaven all my life with a shavette and was never afraid of cutting myself. Now this razor hadn’t been stropped in probably 50 years and it has some rust on it (hope that I can get rid of that) but the difference in sharpness between a shavette and that razor wasn’t even comparable

@@jarnodatema Soak it in vinegar or a mixture of baking soda and vinegar for about an hour. It will turn gray/black from the acidity but that's OK. It will dissolve the rough rust. Miniature plastic bristle brush the crud off. Then polish up with Mothers aluminum mag polish, then Mothers chrome polish to mirror shine. Make sure to work both in good with the pads of your fingers good to "sweat out" the impurities out of the metal and expose swarf and new shiny metal, then wipe, then rinse in hot water, then microfiber wipe.

Straight razors are far superior in my opinion. They need stropping every shave but only need a touch up on a sharpening stone every ten shaves or so depending on how coarse your hair is. One thing that wasn’t mentioned is the blade length on a straight razor is longer, which means pressure on the skin is more evenly spread out meaning less chance of nicks and cuts. The shavette to me is a cheap and easy way to learn the technique on how to use this style of razor.

Buy a good razor for about 100$...buy a good strop for about 68-80$ .. Shave for a good 3 months and MAYBE you could use a hone.. this resharpening after 3 or 4 shaves is absolutely BS 👍 The key, never buy another razor or blade again 🤷🏻‍♂️... King Gillette gave away his razors, because he knew people would have to buy the blades... creating the empire we all know today...

You use very imprecise language in this video, which could be a source of confusion. A double edge razor is a device that holds a double edge blade. The blade is not a razor, it's a blade. So the barber who uses a shavette needs to put a new BLADE into the razor for each new customer, NOT a new razor. The shavette IS the razor. Strops don't sharpen a straight razor blade, they smooth it. Honing sharpens the blade. Stropping should be done both before and after each straight razor shave. Honing is done much less frequently.

Not convinced that every man can shave with a real straight razor. I think some of us have beards that are either too thick or too coarse. I get a far far better shave with a DE safety razor and a Feather blade.

@zenrazor659 5 месяцев назад
You say inaccurate things and not very accurate. The straight razor doesn't always need to be sharpened every 2 or 3 beards! But the worst thing you said is that the shavette doesn't require any skill!! 🙉 The shavette, even if it doesn't need to be sharpened, requires different skills from the straight razor. In fact, there are many who don't know how to use it well and cut themselves!!☠️
