When it comes to straight razors they've always had this certain appeal to me. Ever since I found wet shaving I feel the straight razor users are at the top of this hobby.
It takes skill which has to be learned over time because you can do damage to one's face let's be real here this is a dangerous method of shaving considering the options we have today.
They come in all types and with different Grinds, Points, Notches, Materials like Stainless Steel, Carbon, Swedish Steel the list goes on. You also have to be aware of what comes along with being a straight razor user the caring and maintenance of which is just as involved.
I plunged into straight razors early in wet shaving and had joined a group on honing. We gathered in the summer where we had some very well known RU-vidr’s all at picnic tables trying their hand at creating a sharp edge on Gold Dollar razors. I had my bag of stones like everyone else and we had personal lessons from some of the top straight razor users. I was doing pretty good not great but pretty good and even when we all left I would practice what I learned for a few weeks more.
Then I realized something, It stopped being enjoyable to me. I often wondered was this worth all the trouble and expense to hone a straight razor when it's so easy to just open a DE razor and drop a blade in. I might change my mind down the road but I still feel this way today. I still have my bag of stones and can pick up right where I left off but I truly have no desire to at this point in my life it’s just not for me.
I do think however that straight razors for the most part are so alluring to me. Some I’ve found to be truly stunning and some I would consider works of art and would love to own some of them just because they look so beautiful.
For now, I’ll just keep admiring the beauty of them and leave the actual shaving to someone else more qualified.

Lol that was a valiant effort there Don. I think that sound unnerved u more than the edge. Bark is worse than a bite.. of late oast one month I've been using vintage ebay straights using my own set of hones and strops . I am still leaning but give an awesome shave like nothing else I've used. Wil wait for a full blown bad ass shave using a straight on this channel sometime soon !

Hi Donald- Great shave; thank you! Several years old ago, I tried tolearn to use shavettes, but then needed elbow surgery for a compressed nerve, so that was the end to my straight razor adventures! Great to see you Don as always, enjoyed the video. For me it’s Feather Artist Club DX with the super pro blades. I managed to get the teakwood model some time ago. I find it’s very similar to a straight razor minus the maintenance. Have a good week my friend!

You did awesome for not doing straight shaves in forever! I've heard horror stories about The Art of Shaving stores and their management so it doesn't surprise me they aren't there. They charge way to much for their products and services. I got a royal shave and instead of sticking to the shavette the guy switched to a Gillette Fusion lol.

Nice shave Don. Learning straight razors can be a problem for some of us. As Kai Triska said on his channel a good way to get your left hand ready is to shave with both hands with a DE for a while then move on to straight razors. Wishing you all the best. 💈😎👍

That's so funny. My first real setup was AoS Sandalwood soap and a R89 Grande and AoS brush. I still have the soap and razor. Might have to get the razor out again because it's been years!

Probably the real reason why you’re not good at using a straight razor is because of the way you’re holding the razor. The proper way is to put your first two fingers between the shank and the tang with the scale between them and put the thumb on the bottom of the shank as this will give you more control of the razor just watch more videos on straight razor shaving and try to follow what they are doing I highly recommend the RU-vid channel Adventures In Wet Shaving I’m new to SR shaving but I have learned a lot from this and other RU-vid videos and I’m getting little by little better at it….I still cut myself but any razor will do that even an electric razor…..just don’t give up!!!!👍👍

When I made this video 3 years ago boy did I screw Straight Razor shaving it waspointed out to me that I was not holding the razor correctly embarrassing as it was I will try again and take your advise on looking at Adventures In Wet Shaving for sure thanks for the encouragement and for watching Anthony. Cool video and yeah I don't shave with straight razor as only have one full mobility of one arm and too much hassle in taking care of straight razors. Tried using those shavette and cut myself badly and my wife looked at me and said nope! So been using safety razors and Occams Razor ever since. Hope all is well with you and your wife. Cheerios!!

Straight razors require practice, I go with what "Geo Fatboy" says on one of his video's, it takes around 100 shaves to master. I have a Dovo. It is a shavette where you break a long blade in half, It is made in Solingen in Germany. When It comes to my next shave, there is always a day or so longer since my last shave, it is that bit closer than a DE. I am right handed and find it easier with that hand but strangely, I have never cut myself with the left hand but often with the right! I put it down to taking more time and care with the left hand...

Wow nice video 🤪 and nice try, straights are NOT for me either, I only have a EJ 89 and a Rockwell which I use on plate 4 almost every day and very happy with them super smooth shaves, Been shaving for 14 months now and I think I have it mastered so I am staying with DE shaving 👍🏻 thank you for sharing your videos, God bless.

" Oh god! I am going to kill myself!" haha! That blade is dull from what I saw, it caught on the growth and because you had to "force the cut" it had too much pressure and the release after the cut got you. Part of the reason why I used the Kamisori, using the Feather Artist Club blades. You need to maintain a Straight Edge and my wife will go berserk if I start having stones and a leather strap in the bathroom. (it's already horribly messy with my shave stuff as it is!)

Either hone or stropping. Depending on how bad it is. I use a shavette for shaves. It's the best of both worlds

U didn't have to do the shave. Idk if u did it because I mentioned it or if other people asked it but if ur not comfortable then don't do it on camera. Btw, who taught u how to hold a razor lol that's a cringy way to hold one

*_I must have had a hundred people asking me to do a straight razor shave so it was just not you but you helped it along as well. I know I'm not doing it right or I might have been able to continue the shave to completion which is why I stopped. I know if I'm going to try again I will have to watch a few videos and sharpen the straights but until then I'll let the pros do continue to do it._*
