3000 mile change interval....maybe 20 years ago. Most technicians agree that most oils nowadays can go 5000-7000 (conventional) and more for synthetics. The 3000 mile change interval was just a way to get you to buy their oil more often.
Can a good modern oil go for more then 3000 miles? Absolutely. I'm a technician but i still change my oil ever 4000 miles with synthetic oil. I'd rather be safe and take good care of my engine. A good modern oil will not break down in that time period but another function of oil is to keep contaminants out of the engine. And i rather pay a little extra to keep clean oil running through my engine
Thomas197992 Same here I run a full synthetic and change it every 4,000 miles in my cars and motorcycle. All synthetics are not the same though. For instance Walmart Full Synthetic is no where near Amsoils Signature Series Full Synthetic.
***** Depends if you run the signature series and change your oil once a year you save money. I run NAPA SYN right now and on a 7K oil change run. Thanks for your comment brother.
+105904828722341623418 I have a co-worker who gave me 1 of yall books of oils. He use to call me weekly trying to get me to sell his oil on my youtube channel. I enjoyed reading it. Someone went to college. It reminds of rappers. If u make it sound good. People will buy it.
I use Castrol High Mileage on my 2000 Altima with 220,000k $19. for a 5 quart jug plus $3. Oil filter from Supertech. I change my own oil at 2000 to 3000 miles since I do a lot of short and long distance driving. it's a cheap investment on protecting my engine and saving on expensive repairs.
I have 1992 dodge truck with 321,000 miles and all I have ever used is walmart brand, don't say walmart brand isn't any good . Does not burn or leak any oil between changes I change 3500- 5000 miles.
The 3 months or 3k is what the oil and lube companies want so they can sell more oil and oil changes. Oil can general last for a year if you don't put a lot of miles on the car. As for the miles, 5k for conventional and 8k for synthetic is fine. If you do a lot of towing or drive hard do it 1000 or so miles sooner.
Oh "billy" boy, YOU may not to change much at all if you "trade it in" every few years - but if you keep it for 16 years, and 214K miles, you may change your mind.
Did you know, that Toyota fills all of its vehicles with 0W10 from the factories in Japan and has been doing so since 2010? Its not sold yet in the USA because the API is so far behind in its standards.
someday after I pass away you will be able to buy 0w-00 oh wait that is an electric vehicle. Whatever turns your crank I guess. I ain;t paying to fix anybody elses engine due to ... whatever. Good brand/ high quality, change it often.
using thicker oil will starve the engine of oil. where it is needed the most. because the tolerances in aluminum engines are very tight. and thick oil can not get past these tight tolerances witch will starve areas of the engine that need the oil film . i always put exactly what the cap says. if you are really worried put a product in called no more friction.
I use full synthetic and change my oil every 6 months, which gets me about 3-4K. I don't wait until my oil gets thicker. If it gets thicker it's not protecting my engine as well.
+Whispered X Changing synthetic every 3-4k is a waste. Just use conventional if you change every 6 months or 3-4k. If your worried about thickening just use a 5w-XX. If you are dead set on synthetic leave it in for at least 9 months and get a 0W-XX and that will flow even when it is extremely cold out.
TJ K My change oil light comes on at 8-9 months. So changing it at 6 months is fine. I don't have an oil life indicator other than a simple light that comes on telling me it's time to change the oil. I'm not going to wait until the last minute to change it or wait for the light to come on. The oil gets recycled so it's not a waste.
Whispered X Surely a stock filter should at least do the minimum service distance of 10-15 000km? So what Im asking is, assuming 10 000km is your yearly drive distance and you want to service twice a year, can you "recycle" your current filter replaced at the prior service or does it somehow become mated to the oil you used and thus have to be replaced each oil change?
Can not believe I watch the whole thing, because when I was in my 20's I had a 750cc Norton Atlas motorcycle and used Valvoline racing oil 50w in So. Calif. not racing just interstate hwy. 60 miles 5 days a week and twice in 2 months blew the bottom out and destroyed crank and half of the casing each time. The second time the mechanic said someone must be putting water in the oil, I said not possible. The oil tank would look full, but was full of foam from condensation in the engine. I traded straight across with young man for a 55 chevy after the 2nd rebuild and about 2 weeks he came back and said it was knocking. He wanted to trade back, but I said no because I had already put new tires, rims and new carb. on it. Felt bad for the young man but I am now 73 yrs. old and never used Valvoline again. I have found that a high sulfur crude base oil, condensation and engine heat you get sulfuric acid that makes crude in the engine. I haved used full synthetic for many years from Mobil 1 to (cause of Exxon buying it) now Lucas the last 15 or so years. Ps. If you buy a high mile vehicle had a 1 qt. of auto transmission fluid (it is 10 wt high detergent oil lasts 100,000 miles in transmissions) to your oil each oil change until you see the exhaust stop smoking (slowly cleans crude off of bottom oil ring) and/or the hydraulic lifters stop clicking. Works better than any over the counter product and cheap. Oh, check engine light on add 1 Lucas gas treatment and 1 can of Seafoam gas treatment I will bet it goes out, just done this lately on a 99 RAV4 (199686 miles on it) and a 03 Dodge Dakota (69000 miles on it. Hope it works for you.
WAKE UP RU-vidRS SERIESLY, THIS IS A SALES ADVERT. YOU DON'T NEED TO CHANGE OIL EVERY 3000 - 5000 MILES. MANUFACTURERS SAY SOMETHING LIKE 10 000 +PLUS ALMOST ALWAYS. THESE GUYS WANT US TO CHANGE OIL THREE TIMES MORE THAN YOU REALLY NEED. VALVOLINE? COME ON. STOP THE BULLSHIT
moltitrader YOU "WAKE UP" - Read your owners manual, or look up varied driving habits/varied driving conditions/ varied types of vehicles, and see that - one size does NOT fit ALL!
I never hear anyone talk about the oil consumption over the interval period. I do my own oil changes and I put 5qts in every time as recommend, but I only get 3 1/2 out after I pour the old oil back into the same containers. If I lose > Qt every 3k miles, how much oil is lost for people going 7.5k miles. Running on half the amount of recommended oil can't be good for the engine. Your thoughts?
If you check your oil you shouldn't have a problem with running the engine low on oil I check my oil every few days or before a long trip, and if you loosing a lot of oil try switching to a high mileage oil, I've used regular non high mileage conventional 10w30 peak for the first time right now, I've used mobile 1 high mileage 10w30 full synthetic oil pricey but good, and I use to use Pennzoil 5 and 10w30 conventional can't talk myself into trying there full syn made w natural gas...yeah right but there conv oil has a waxing agent and that's y I quit using Pennzoil I've used Wix filters Napa silver and gold filters bosch and fram high mileage and extra guard all w no issues Lucas Gull syn gear oil 75w90 for I don't know how long now i'm getting ready to change it to conv 80w90 supertech but I might hold off on the conv and put lucas syn back in for the winter since it flows easier in the cold ;) I've used stp blue oil additive and the grey high mileage additive I don't have leaks and haven't since I used mobile 1 high mileage 10w30 full syn. even with syn I still changed my oil every 4k or so not the 5k+ no thanks :( my trucks everything no truck=no job :(((((( LOL so I take good care of it and it take care of me ;) hope this helps you some ;) oh and nice bike cant see w the small pic but I ride a sport bike to an love it :) but the truck has a heater and a roof to keep the cold OUT and the rain OFF LOL
JayzBeerz I had a 02 Chevy Venture and the oil life meter would reset it self to 100% after u change the oil. It had a sensor on the bottom of oil pan. I could not believe GM spend the money on that.
I drive a tractor/trailer and my company change the oil every 30,000 miles. Yes car engines are different but think about that for a second. The truck I drive had 1,400 miles when I got it. It now has 452,000 miles and run great.
Valvoline only guarantee 3000 mile protection. Every other oil guarantee based on manufacture recommendations. Therefore Valvoline is either inferior oil or its oil marketing is behind the common norms.
James Huang " inferior oil?" I DON'T usually use Valvoline, but DON'T think very expensive race cars use it IF it was so "inferior" - try to think before you comment!
Michael, the life expectancy of a funny car engine is five minutes. If the car in this video makes it to the final round on Sunday, the engine's been rebuilt four times that day.
same for tires now. The odd place will give you some le-way, etc. But ya, they make em cheaper these days. Rubber shortage! Why not, can buy eggs/butter/ bread.
Who cares? Modern engines run for 250,000 miles. Most People trade up for stupid gimmicks: WiFi, info-screens, GPS or heated seats....or just to look more cool.
mirola73 it's 3 months because condensation can build in your engine from the temperature changes you get through the day. getting rid of that condensation protects your engine from wear.
Don't accept the owners manual. Do your own research. In general, if you are doing severe duty driving, cut the owners manual recommendation at least in half. Maybe more. Going to the supermarket, the gym and public library doesn't feel like severe duty, but it is. Oil is relatively cheap. A failed engine usually mean buying an entire new vehicle.
Chevron Havoline Pro DS is all you need to know... aside from you do NOT need to change your oil and filter every 3 months when using any high end full synthetic. Never.
well if it dose make you feel better i put 2 quarts 5w30 and the other 3 quarts 5w20. in the summer time like right now. and i use a product called no more friction.
I started using synthetic n my 96 Tahoe at 185,000 miles. The stock 5w30 weight and I change it every 7,000 miles. I'm up to 302,000 miles and it does not smoke at start up or when it idle for a while. I have to add a half quart every 5,000 miles. I wonder will it make it to 400,000 miles.
Peter Wilkins Thanks for watching. I try to keep it real. I'm trying to buy a house. If i get it. You will see some really great videos of me working on cars.
a good syntheric ester based oil is polar. that means it clinks to metal surfaces. and it lubricates better the more pressure applied to it. (not system psi) but mechanical
You said 3000 miles is your recommended oil change interval, but to also go by what the manufacturer says. My manufacturer says 9000 miles. So which do I go by?
If you own 2 vehicles and one uses regular oil, and the other uses synthetic, and you have 200k miles on both of them, which oil protected the motor better?.,,,
Tear down the engines and get out your micrometers. What you will find is that, if both were changed at about 5000 mile intervals, there will be no appreciable differences, if the engines were identical to begin with.
funy thing is my my acura rsx service manual only recomens to change the the filter every 2 oil change, and recomend oil to be change every 10k miles. so wierd
nothing weird. Honda and acura owner's manual mentions it clearly. No point in wasting money when the manufacturer themselves are recommending something for the engine they designed ............
+1975 First On Race Day Capri 3.0 Ghia not the 3000 mile portion to classic cars but more-so the time frame being they usually arent driven that much in a year. but youre right in the modern car my mercedes averaged me out at about 7k intervals via the pcm ticker though it resets to 10k.
***** true and modern cars use full synthetic oils which last a lot longer tan mineral oils , i usually drive my 1975 Ford Capri about 1000 miles / year so i usally change the oil every 2 and a half / 3 years although sometimes i do have to top the oil off a bit since it burns some oil
It's weird but my 2010 Honda Accord w/78kmiles and the oil indicator usually asked me to change around 3-4K miles. I usually push it to 5k cause it's looks fine - I use Penzoil fully synthetic. Not sure how Honda reports the oil percentage on when to change.
Rich LoEngine rpm, load, distance etc. Also looks can be deceiving never go by the way it looks unless it's the consistency of jelly. That's bizarre though 4k-unless you are red lining hard launches from every red light lol. My c class is usual about 7k intervals. The car doesn't know what oil your are using either so take that into account and be conscious rather letting the car dictate when to throw your money at it prematurely :)
Well. It's you vehicle. Do what you think is necessary. I live where the overnight temp sometimes goes to -20. -30 in January. Oil is cheap. A new engine isnt!
If you've run conventional oil for over ... 50,000 miles and switch to a quality synthetic, then, the oil level will go down rapidly. do not be concerned, because the oil is picking up contaminants and exiting the motor via the exhaust. after it's cleaned up, ? a couple thousand miles ? .. then your motor oil level will not go down rapidly with the synthetic. But if you have a sloppy motor with 120,000 or so, miles, then switching to synthetic at that point may be unwise as the syn will have too much to clean out, and it will slip out any crevices and gaps. In old timer motors, use conventional. you need a good motor for synthetic to make solid sense to use. An old motor using a quart per thousand miles is expected. and time to get a new car too.
Jeffrey Ramsey the grime that comes off of your detergent doesn't go out the exhaust unless you have cylinder wall wear. it's intended for that grime to go into the oil filter.
I used Wal-Mart full synthetic $18.00 for 5 quarts, think I should change to Valvoline high mileage?? I had a 2001 Jimmy 2 wheel drive and used full synthetic at 100,000 miles sold it with 188,000 miles and it purred like a kitten. I used Valvoline (full synthetic) never went over 5,000 miles between changes!!
+Steven Dusza I also use Supertech Full Synthetic from Wal-Mart in two of my older vehicles 219,000 & 277,000 miles.  SJ was the required rating when these vehicles were manufacture. Now we are using SN, so I am above the grade anyway.  My vehicles run just fine and I love saving money.  I am confident Super Tech is a quality oil. I use a Bosch Distance Plus filter and I change my oil & filer ever 5,000 miles.
One question; So the algorithm that oem's use to calculate when to change oil is BS? We should just change every 3 to 5000 miles regardless. My 01 chevy has gone well over 7000 before the change light came on. This was with full synthetic Valvoline. I drive a 2015 ford fusion and that will run up near 9000 before oil change light comes on. I have also done oil samples on a Mazda 6 2.5 4cylinder at 9500 miles with Castrol edge; analysis said I could have gone to 12000. Filter was fram extended miles. I think above 9000 is the most I will go with a change but goes to show that oils have come a long way.
can I switch from semisytheti. high milage oil with seal conditioners to a full synthetic oil. or do I need to stay with the jigs mage oil because of the seal conditioners. I'm using currently Valvoline max life.
You can switch back and forth as much as you like. Personally though I would not use synthetics in a high-mileage engine. The difference in laminar flow characteristics makes seeping past seals more likely. Change oil (including all synthetics) at about 5000 miles.
@dccdanny can anyone help me please? i bought oil thats formulated for vehicles that have over 120'000 km but i only have 90'000 km on my car, are there any negative affects in me using this? thanks for any help you may give
No, but frankly at that mileage, leaking seals are very unlikely anyhow. So, why would you want to tamper with their chemistry. I don't use it in my car with 150,000 MILES and know a fair amount about motor oils.
I know it's kinda pointless to prove this, but I am very confident now that it is a volvo head because of 4 bolts around each spark plug hole. This seems specific to the volvo head.
***** No, the anti-flush video. BTW my Tahoe transmission that I rebuilt. Has almost 20,000 miles on it. 10,000 miles and I will drop the pan and change the filter.
***** People have been dropping the pan for years. Then some smart-ass created a problem that didn't exist. Then he create a solution to this so-call problem called a flush machine. Then you have owners of auto shops that don't know how a transmission work and they think this will save time. So they buy the thing and push them on customers who don't know any better.
***** Guess what? When u start the engine, the pump fill the TC. As the engine run, fluid is circulating n and out the TC all the time. This is why u don't need to worry about draining it. When u stop the engine, over half the fluid drain down to the pan. That bull shit about there's 3 quarts of fluid still n the TC is a myth. If u don't believe me. Lay a TC on it's back. Fill it up to the neck. Now stand it up-right. Over half the fluid will drain out.
***** I drive a 2010 International Prostar with a 15 liter Cummins inline 6 with 455hp at 1800 rpm and 1550lbs of torque at only 1200 rpm. Did u know semis transmissions are 2 transmission side by side n one box. I'm not counting the aux unit n the back that give it low range. I was wondering why the transmission was so wide. Because we have to pull so much weight up long hills, they say the torque has to be split n half that way for the unit to last.
Could someone answer this question for me please I would be very grateful I got a ford focus 55 plate mk 2 and in the manel it's states the oil to use is wwss_m2c913_B could not find that oil so I got some triple QX 5w 30 fully synthetic and it says it meets ford requirements then it says wwss_M2C913_D when I google it it said this oil can be used in engines which say a older number like the one in my manel is this ture
The newer wwss_M2C913_D specification replaces the old spec. Newer oils are now (2021) required to meet API Service "SP" specifications. The famous 95 MERC runs Pennzoil Ultra Platinum, 5-W-20; Bosch Premium Oil Filter #3410; and a FILTERMAG #SS365PR Magnet Kit. Oil & Filter changes at 5,000 miles.
***** Don't switch to a 10w. 5w and 0w are superior for cold weather starts. As far as changing from a 20 to 30 its up to you. I use a mix of the 2. So its about a 25 to reduce the oil my engine burns. it wouldn't damage your engine. most cars only use 20 because of government efficiency standards and are better protected by a 30.
@@tjk5992 and they only wenbto a 30 instead of 40 for the same reasons. My year lancer is 5w30 but the next year ezaxt engine bolt for bolt says 5w20. Foreign service manauls for my temp range say to run 20w50 America is the only country with these thin oil mandates for economy not protection. Summer heat and stop and go traffic once oil passes 210 it's no longer protection properly the issue becomes oil pressure drops to low for bearings in the heat. The oil can protect but doesn't flow enough. I use dual rat Ed diesal oil in everything. Supertech 15w40 in my cars trucks, equipment for decades hundreds of thousands of miles and shiny clean valve covers and rockers in everything. $13 a oil change in my cars I do it every 2-3 months regardless of miles. If it can take hard diesals emissions for 10-15k it easily handles a car or truck for a few thousand
The coldest it gets here is like 20 degrees 15w is good for 10 degrees. Synthetic 15+40 even further than that. But I just add half a quart of marvel mystery oil during the worst of winter I is a 5 weight oil.
denstorebog Yeah that's incredibly often. A normal change intervall i Sweden is about 9300 miles to 12500 miles. New cars with prolonged service intervalls have about 19000 miles. Usually a car engine here outlasts the car because of rust. But we still have many old cars around. My GF car for example has now done 196000 miles and it is a 2001 model year and has always had its oil changed between the above stated intervall. There is nothing wrong with the engine. But then, perhaps you have crappy oil in the states?
denstorebog Oil manufacturer's recommended intervals vs vehicle manufacturer's intervals. This is fairly universal. Hint, don't listen to the guys that want you to buy more of their oil.
always. Bought them by the case at Wally-Mart. In the old days. Up here in Canada we dont get much Wally products. Never had a problem with any of them. Tranny though on a Dodge you had better use the 'right stuff'or you will be having a problem. Found that out the hard way back in the 90's. Filters are cheap, just sayin'
They say Edge is good, but after personal experience and chatting with mechanics after their experience with "Magnatec" and associated sludge formation - it will never see me. Shell Ultra or Liqui/Lubro-Moly for my BMW.
actually 3000 to 5000miles oil chnage is right why would u want your to go fpr more or up to 10000 miles you guys are not educated enough and underestimate these guys yes they advertise valvoline but everything they say is true. do u realize that oil sludges once you exceed nore than the recommended time frame they suggest u to chnage why would u let your vehucle run up tp 10000 miles til oil chnage your actually harmimg your engine by sludging causing damage soon. not only that your oil filter doesnt lat more than 3000 to 5000 mile frame of time is exactly why you change your oil and filter same time. that ehy the oil turns black since it failed to clean the oil thus. causing to turn sludgy. yes there is some oil that you can run up to 7500 but the point is would your oil filter be good enough to be able to filter and no like i said it gets dirty its done and causes to sludge the due to the lack of filtering. why i say this because ive myslef bought oil from penzoil that says itll last up 7500 miles i knew it was bull at first i check my oil every once a week and after ive gone almost 5000 miles my oil turn darker and now i needed an oil change but it was because the oil filter failed to filter the oil could last but thw oil filter cant. so next time people dont say stuff like u know these guys are right. if a mechanic tells u that you can run your engine with the same oil for 10000 mile change he only wants you get engine break downs or problems for him to have making money for himself dont also trust mechanics. always stick with the fact 3000 to 5000 mile oil change or keep track on your oil by the smell of burnt or dark or sludge
I buy oil and a filter that are both good for 25000 miles (or one year). I just change it once a year even though I don't drive that far. No sludge, the oil isn't even completely black.
wholeNwon Obviously you've never heard of Amsoil Signature Series. Despite what you say, the color of oil is a good indicator of its life and how much wear is happening in the engine.
sure mixing oils is fine but dont you dare switch from conventional to full synthetic on an engine that has 150,000+ it will knock shit lose, find its way to oil galleries, and clog them.
Petroleum motor oils are notorious for forming what’s know as a false seal Varnish and crud will build up around a failing seal and help keep a more viscous petroleum oil from leaking. Synthetic oils that are highly detergent will clean off the build up and expose the all ready failing seal. There’s your leak! Adding synthetic to an engine that is worn and not taken care of is a risk
Amsoils and Royal purple both have commented on this. They are easily interchangeable. You can swap synthetic back and forth all day. You will run into problems and see leaks if you just drop it into an engine that has been worn and not taken care of. What school did you guys graduate from?
I'm tired of this "lifeblood of your engine" stuff. I know a little about medicine and physiology - admittedly not much - but it seems to me, motor oil is the lymph of your engine, not the lifeblood. It is hard to analogize to physiology, but the oil filter might be the spleen of your engine. The fuel injectors, or the venturi in the case of a carbureted system, are the mitochondria. I think. Just go ahead and call it the lifeblood. I don't care.
You keep skipping the FACT as to whether Driven is 100% synthetic or just Fully Synthetic. Also why not mention the base stocks? Grade IV or V??? Most of these videos are just hype. Where are the oil specifications???
