Wow.....what an amazing film,saw it in '78 when it was first released. Went back the following week and saw it again.

Couldn't agree more. This was the film that convinced me that Harry Dean Stanton is our greatest living character actor. And isn't that actor Sandy Baron who takes a beating from Hoffman? He played Jack Klumpus on "Seinfeld."

American film acting at its best.

One of the great strengths about this film is that Max's characters is very self-righteous with his strong sense of what is ethical or not yet he violates society's ethical codes without any compunction....complex, paradoxical and as a result his character has real dramatic depth and credibility. Great script and great acting.

Jack Klumpus from Seinfeld .

If this film had been out after Thief or Heat, with Michael Mann's original script, with different actors (as the leads I mean, because Dustin and Harry could still play characters from the book)
