😅😂🤭. I have a riot telling my home town (Erie, PA) anglers where I fish we don't need a boat. Just a step ladder. Then to see Matt lay down a WARNER step ladder originally manufactured less than an hour from Erie in Greenville, PA. Cool video Bama.

That was perfect mackerel water. Nice chop, not too clean, not too dirty. Took me back to my youth with my Dad on Anglin's Pier. When they're feeding that consistently, instead of risking a more expensive lure try this: Get a lead bucktail and keep one of those Spanish to cut belly strips. ¼" x 4" as a trailer. Very effective and no big loss if you get cut off from frayed mono. 😁👍 In fact, I've even used just treble hooks with a ¼oz egg sinker with a belly strip for mackerel and *definitely* for bluefish cuz those homicidal psychopaths will hit ANYTHING, hahaha. 😂🤣😂🤣

Growing up there in the 70s and early 80s, huge schools of Spanish blitzing bait balls in the surf were pretty common, as were massive schools of mullet. Many times I've thrown my cast net on the edge of a bait ball being hammered and gotten a 10' net full of Spanish mackerel. If I remember correctly, I once got 27 Spanish in a single cast. I've gotten 30 to 40 mullet several times. The net would be so heavy, I had to drag it up on the beach. Then, in the 80s, gill net fishermen nearly destroyed the Spanish and mullet population. Spanish and mullet are both AMAZINGLY good when fileted with the skin left on and smoked with pecan wood.
@SaltyPirate71
@SaltyPirate71 3 года назад
@@thomasmccullagh1300 Certainly not my favorite fish. Smoked is about the only way I eat it. It actually mellows the strong fishy taste.

Down here, mullet fries are a big thing. They are really common as fundraisers for churches and civic organizations. When mullet are running, you can easily get enough to feed hundreds of people with literally a few throws of the cast net. If it is super fresh, meaning only a few hours out of the water at most, it's actually pretty good fried. BUT, if it is just the slightest bit off, it is truly horrendous. There was even a restaurant in nearby Pace, FL that was known primarily for mullet and got featured on several national food shows.
@SaltyPirate71
@SaltyPirate71 3 года назад
@@TheMtGRogue Yeah, I'm pretty familiar with fried mullet fundraisers. I grew up in Gulf Shores and Pensacola. I ran a bar and grill for a few years that kept fried mullet on the menu. I got it fresh every day when it was possible. Except for whiting and catfish, I'm not a big fan of fried fish. Occasionally a fried flounder, which is amazing.

You must have been fishing mostly during the cooler months then. I've been fishing Pensacola Beach (just down the road, featured on this channel often)since the late 80's and the Spanish and Kings are what got me out at 5:30 a.m. most summer mornings. They tend to run pretty thick from around May to early September. The beginning and end of the run being the best, and a bit of a lull in the dead of summer.

When the water is nice and the surf isn't too rough, you can also wade out onto the first sandbar. It's a lot of fun. If you do, it really is best if you have a well sealed reel, though (like a Penn Spinfisher or up, or one of the mag-sealed Daiwas). You are eventually going to catch a surprise wave to the chest and your reel will get at least splashed, if not briefly submerged.

Man what "OCEAN" is that?
@TheMtGRogue
@TheMtGRogue 3 года назад
You understand that the boundaries between the various "bodies" of saltwater are largely imaginary right? The Gulf is enormous, hence the name (from a root which means "abyss" or "profound depth"). It has much more in common with the ocean than a bay. I tell you what... let's blindfold you, fly around in a plane for a few hours so that you have no idea where we are, then we'll drop you in the water five miles offshore and see if you can tell me if you're in the ocean or the gulf. Spoiler: the answer is absolutely not.
@bradleycrenshaw6778
@bradleycrenshaw6778 3 года назад
@@TheMtGRogue you so smart that you cant even answer a simple question. What's the name of the Ocean that he is in? The name of the Ocean that he is stranded in. The one in the title. Whats the name? Can you tell me? probably not.
@TheMtGRogue
@TheMtGRogue 3 года назад
@@bradleycrenshaw6778 Reading comprehension is clearly not your strong point. Maybe you should keep trying to figure it out. You seem to be struggling pretty badly with simple English, but it's okay... we'll wait. Here's a clue for you: focus on the second and third sentences. This is what you call a "comparison." This is also where I make it clear that while he is not technically in an ocean, it is far more like an ocean than you seem to understand. Just because you are so painfully slow on the uptake, let me state this as clearly as possible for you: I never once said or implied that he was in an actual ocean. I also pointed out that where he is is so much like an ocean, that if someone did not know where they were, they could not tell the difference. Would you like me to keep trying to explain this simple concept to you in more ways, or are you starting to grasp it yet? Also, considering that I live about 30 minutes east of where he is, on the exact same coastline, I'm very well aware of the body of water. Oh look! It's another learning opportunity for you! Now we're going to do context clues! Ready? Let's see if you can put this one together all by yourself: I referred to the body of water as the Gulf. His name is Bama Beach Bum. He fishes primarily in Alabama (shocker!) and Florida. Now, what body of water shares a coastline with those two states and has "Gulf" in the name? Is it the Persian Gulf? No. How about the Gulf of Tonkin? Nope. Let me know if you still need help. The best part is, I can almost guarantee that you still believe that you made a valid point (because you still haven't grasped what I've explained over and over again). I honestly feel a little bad for being so condescending, but it's very hard not to be when you are acting as if you are some kind of genius looking down upon the plebians who don't know the difference between the Gulf of Mexico and the actual ocean (while in reality you are simply unable to grasp that words not only have literal definitions, but also connotations). P.S.- Did you catch that there at the end? I gave you the answer to your test question! Should I repeat it to make sure that you got it?
@bradleycrenshaw6778
@bradleycrenshaw6778 3 года назад
@@TheMtGRogue again still so smart that you cant even say He is fishing in a body of water called the Gulf of Mexico can you? You just cant do it. Remember all i asked was what was the name of the ocean that he was stranded in. You sir took it upon yourself to start your berating smart ass brow beating condescending dialog about geographical water boundaries of this silly place called the earth. I will call the producers of the Deadliest Catch and remind them that they are wrong and chastise them for not checking with Kevin Brown in reference to calling their fishing area the Bering Sea. Because according to Dr. Brown everything is an ocean. Oh wait I better get ahold of the producers of Bering Sea Gold obviously they didn't check with you either, what a bunch of dummies. Ten bucks says when you have a flat tire or a dead battery you call roadside service.
