Guys..just so you all know...our front winch was broken 🤕 We have had a lot of comments suggesting we use some sort of land anchor to winch off of. This was impossible for us at the time because, as we said, our winch was busted!! Thanks for all the comments though guys! We're loving hearing from you all!!
amazing persistance, but,its desperation, it has to be done.no fun, at all.. winching the van, id of tried skidding the tow bar around, pivot it, tie a track to the tow bar,. im not a fan of towing trailers , anywhere, not even for work.. theres lots of self contained 4x4 trucks to choose from. or second hand. mate bought an old army acco, when they were changing to unimogs..idea to fit caravan on back, job done.. ended up with an international scout. we left s.a. to karumba. me in a 78 f100 4x4. back in 82.. karumba to burketown is interesting. hot springs, old steem engine, to pump the water. excellent fishing, concrete warf at burketown. nothing there, 2nd ww history. theres salt pans, you might....like.....again, amazing effort. 👍🦘🌏
You can use a tow rope too bro , if winch isn’t working you can bury the spare and double wrap the rope aroundt tyre so it pinches on itself and then as the wheel turns it pulls you toward the spare wheel, you do have to get the wheel of the ground to wrap the rope around tho so it can be a bit of a drag ,
I wouldn't worry about a broken winch. There's a bloke named Russell Coight who will eventually find where you are and do his best to assist. Top bloke.
Love that you guys are pushing that beast to where it should be and not just a bit of graded dirt highway and calling it off-road touring. Would love to see any earlier footage of your journey/ travels if you have any. I bet I would not be the only one soaking it all up. Keep up the great work guys. Got ta go so I can hit the subscribe button
That was one of the most incredible recoveries I've ever seen. Not just because it was so freaking hard, but you somehow treated each other kindly. Well done, and wow - just wow.
Based on where you go and what you are driving, I would suggest some pneumatic lift bags. We had them when I was a firefighter for rescue work. They are very thin, have a large surface area, can conform to the shape of the object being lifted, are highly puncture resistant, and can lift a tremendous amount of weight with just compressed air. Your situation is obviously too soft for a conventional jack. The surface area of the lift bags overcomes this, and because they are thin, you only need a cm or two to get it under the vehicle. Once lifted, you can place your mats under the tire instead of trying to drive on to them
I’ve just discovered you guys and having watched this video I have to say that you are both awesome people. The relationship you have with each-other is incredible. There are very few people that have the ability to stay that calm, retain their sense of humour, support each-other and to talk so nicely to each-other in the face of adversity. Good luck with the repairs, looking forward to following you on your adventures.
Thank you so much. We have been doing this sort of stuff for a little while. So although this looks stressful. It’s just another day in the office for us
I am thousands of miles away in the UK, but I screamed with you when that truck came out of the mud !!!!!! thanks for sharing , subscribed love Rachael P x
Top Tip. Burry the spare wheel away in front of the truck, hook the winch cable through the centre of the wheel to a tyre iron or big spanner and then pull yourself out up to the spare. Drive safe.
You guys are just champions. What Stella examples to your kids of acting with character in tough times. This was one of the best outback vids I've seen, mainly because you were real, you were vulnerable, positive mindsets. I have to say your ability to keep your cool and support each other is inspirational. Lastly, I teared up when the emotion of finally getting the truck out overflowed in the cab. Good on you both. And happy mothers day.
You guys have two new subscribers. We were so impressed with your adventure. Full marks for staying so calm and rational during a crisis. Your efforts in getting unstuck were first class. Cheers.
Mistakes happen, but good work getting out!. Good to see you two in high spirits about that mess and keeping a calm head. Definitely some valuable lessons learned here. I've busted u joints and knuckles before putting power to a steer axle at full lock because I had no other choice. Then it's a worse situation with three, or even worse, two wheel drive. One tip for getting out of slick spots is to power brake. Don't mess with a handbrake. Foot on the brake, foot on the throttle, and let off the foot brake. Maybe you guys tried it, but a lot of people don't know about that little trick. It's gotten me out of more than a few slick situations in passenger vehicles and loaded semis at 105,000 pounds (about 48,000 kg).
CV is my bet. The isuzu 300 CV seem to break when at high load and steering wheel turned to lock. Another youtuber had the exact thing happen on fraiser. He ended up using the bump stop bolt to make it so he could not get full lock. Man you were on mission to dig that out, great job by all of you. The digger, the driver, the nanny :).
@@thecartwrights snapped right on full lock. That is a bit of a poor design and would be on your mind every time it gets sticky. Hopefully isuzu see your vid and fix the underlying issue because when you think of it it, it wasn't really hard going for it in that there was plenty of slip going on (lowering the actual stress you could put on it). The one in fraiser happened in nice soft slippery sand but at full lock. Its not like it was rock crawling with deflated tyres where there would be a lot more stress introduced. My thought is someone (isuzu mgmt) just decided to cut the turning circle by 2ft and never thought about the odd angled stress in the UNI joint.
Love it when going against intuition, pig headedly and stubbornly not giving in , then shock horror nature teaches yet another lesson. Everyone known,on the outback plains, water can cause immense issues, especially under ahumans weight, let alone a heavy rig.
We've all been there...lessons not learnt in blood and suffering are soon forgotten..flood country is a no go zone... great work in staying together and working as a team...and thank you for the awesome footage...all's well ends well...
Use the rear winch, bury the spare tire behind the caravan as an anchor point, use a snatch block to move the caravan back away from the Isuzu. Now you've got room to use the rear winch and anchor to ease the Isuzu back out of the bog. :)
Good trick is the Digg hole, spare tire and winch off that when you have nothing to pull from and can even run it from underneath the vehicle and caravan Love the episodes
Some of the greatest understatement made in the commentary. What an adventure that was. You won't forget the mission to retrieve your truck in a hurry. Safe travels. Keep on with the great vlogs.
Wow. To say that was a HUGE effort is the understatement of the year. Great job!!! And thank you for continuing to record everything as it gives the rest of us a brilliant insight into what can go wrong in the middle of nowhere. 🙂
That was epic, what a battle you guys had, shows the importance of recovery boards, winches and shovels. Glad to see you got out of the bog. You guys are living the dream and getting on with life.
There isn't a part of the outback where you can allow yourself to forget what you're doing and lose concentration, especially when you have a wife and three kids in tow, so for that you did deserve your self ass kicking. But having said that I was impressed by your work ethic and calmness at getting yourselves back out again, well done. I managed to break my rear hub studs towing a small camper trailer across the Simpson a while back and was looking at 3 to 4 weeks before a friend drove across from Melbourne to help me get out. I ended up paying Mt Dare $2500 (RACQ paid me back as part of my roadside recovery plan though :) ) to come out and recover me after a few days instead even though I still had 3 or 4 weeks worth of water and food with me.
Being stuck is part of going off-road. Spending time with family is worth a bit of hard work. Traveling with family is one of my favorite things. Keep at it. Don't let haters bother you. Can't wait to get out with our new trailer. Maybe we will get to Australia some day. We are in the US...
This brought back some memories for us 😬 You guys did so well though. Glad you’re all out and ok 🤙 Stop beating yourself up, this is all part of being out there living the dream.
Crackin' episode guys. What a situation you got your mob into. Great job perceiving with your bogging and getting it out. Loving your channel and your beautiful little family. Don't change👌
I’m so glad I stumbled across your channel guys, your positive attitude towards everything and each other is so refreshing compared to all the doom and gloom or over dramatised content of today….👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
What a fab couple! Your wife never stopped smiling throughout the whole scenario, And very well behaved children i must say. Well done Dad for all that digging 👍👍👍 Great adventures to you all, Mick.
OMG. That couple of minutes (for us on the video) of you rocking back and forth just trying to make a few extra inches of run up was intense. I even yelled when you finally got out. I can only imagine what joy you both must have felt when it finally came out. Great work!
Subscribed after the first minute! What a rig, adventure and story to tell into the future! Love you both keep positive in the stressful times. Don't beat yourself up so much mate, stuff happens when your out having a go at life. The camerawork, vlogging the whole challenge and editing was well done. Great talk at the end! I'm watching your adventures from now.
My new favorite channel. I love you guys. A big THANK YOU for videoing so much of your efforts, when you were u p to your eyeballs in challenges! You give me inspiration ( and remind me of some pretty special days when I took my family on adventures). I miss those days, so enjoy them, lumps and all! And know that you don't always have loved ones around forever. God bless.
Very entertaining video happy that you came out. We travelled 6 1/2 years in an expedition truck also had some Hairy moments was happy to carry 40 ton air jacks. They are about a metre long and push 40 cm high.
Great work team to keep it all together in that situation! What an epic life lesson and to keep filming was impressive. I think filming for RU-vid would have been a very low priority if we were in that situation! I think I would have tried burying the spare wheel with a strap attached and then hooking the winch up. Did the truck break a CV as you thought? Looking forward to your next epic life lesson :).
Hey mate. Thank you Burying a spare wheel would have been my first option, if my front winch wasn’t broken at the time. It really was a series of rookie and unfortunate events that led to my undoing 🤕🤕 Yeah front right CV exploded
Buddy, you had a very very good patience and faith. If It was me I would be very angry and would be swearing to my wife too. And you got a such a supportive wife. Good job my friend. I watched the whole episode. Enjoy what you are doing.
What a mammoth effort! incredible! must be an incredibly isolating feeling with things failing, more rain, carvan seperated from the truck and kids there too! well done guys!
watched the video on your rig set up.. then watch a few more to eventually get here... aaahhhh the trials of life... I was baffled why you weren't using your front winch then I read your comment where you said its broken... I presume the back one works?... just an idea encase it happens again, some how i don't think it will :) , but all you needed to do was take the spare of, bury it so its facing sideways head on, thread the rear cable under the truck and strap it to your spare/anchor, again the spare needs to be burried right down, a small trench to allow cable to be straight... this would have worked Im sure of it.. regardless I take my hat or to you both for your determination and perseverance ... may you guys be forever blessed on your travels..
Great adventures , admire your bravery for attempting this trip especially with deadly reptiles ect kicking about around those areas . If i had the money I would have used a "Unimog " based like your Isuzu . Much envy to you , I hope this little mud hole had taught lessons . Keep Safe
@@alwynvanwyk1851 yes, saw that too…..but no mention in Dad’s commentary? Interesting to know if the other vehicle pushed ahead or retreated. Also no indication Dad’s RU-vid report on the final route to Alice!
Hey mate!! Soo what we didn’t explain on the camera is multiple cars came through the gate whilst we were there. The binns track was actually quite busy on this day. It was busy until we got stuck. Then we didn’t see another car all afternoon and all night. Half our luck really 🤣
Why would you even get close to the water in a vehicle that looks like a train and probably weights as much??? By the looks of the underside of that vehicle it was not built to go off road!!!
You guy's are amazing 👏 that was some effort to get out of there, hope it didn't cost to much to fix the truck, your wife is amazing to keep her spirits up and looking after the kids, I bet the little ones thought it was alot of fun, ha ha 😅 hats off to you all for keeping your cool, well done ❤ from rick in Perth, Australia 🇦🇺 cheers 🍻
We have been following you recently. watch now from the beginning. wow what beautiful vlogs. we look with excitement and beautiful places. and your wonderful family. you live such a beautiful and simple and enjoyable life. Love from Jose and Richard from Holland
Just found your channel a few days ago. Really like seeing all the out of the way places we don't see anywhere else. Never seen anything like it before and I am an old person now. Love your family Keep it all coming . Thanks
Now that's edutainment! 💯% Your recovery skills just got a whole lot sharper. You should us that it's not all bouncy bounce sprinkled with some Roos here and there.⚡🛠🏕🌞🦘🌧👍 I'm glad everyone is safe and sound with no trips to the hospital😊
What a nice family... And rig... 😨 Mom with her little pin prick black sarcasm keeping the spirit ( and the video vibe ) high, Dad keeping his cool, even when he was worked up, never giving up, sitting in the mud with a nice fresh mug of coffee served by "babe" ... What a man.. ."okay babe, give it all".... ...and babe did just that..and the truck obliged... Very good recovery after a stupid mistake that could happen to anyone... That little boy just happily crawled onto dad's lap ready for the next adventure, a Desert Race !!!! wohooooo..... Thanks for a video with lessons learned, and how to keep your cool during an emergency situation. Another big downpour, and the water could have flooded your newly dug escape trenches.... Hope the truck was an easy fix... 🎖️ 🇿🇦 🎖️
My first Cartwrights video! You did great! I watch a lot rock crawling and recovery videos, mostly in Utah (absolutely unsurpassed beauty) and Oregon (more unsurpassed beauty) and I kept telling you what to do! But you all did great! Just don't do it again LOL! You have a new subscriber cause those are some beautiful blue eyes you're sporting, I'm going to look for more!
Thank you RU-vid algorithm for the recommendation! What an amazing adventure. Inspirational. Unwavering positivity in the face of so much unknown. Wow. Definitely clicking subscribe. Much love from the USA.
Good on you,,, what a chore!!! if you sink in the mud stay away!!! Loosing the 4x4 / CVC joints kept you their longer i think. heck with the coffee i wanted a beer just watching.
Wow, what an epic bog.....good on you for persevering and getting your family out of possibly danger , that's what a real man does...................epic video indeed
Been there on my own, 5 hrs it took me to get moving, exhausted. Lessons learned? Consider: Doubling up on the Maxtrax, Get the front winch fixed / replaced, Get some diff-lockers fitted, Buy a turfor and ground anchor, Press-on and stay loving each other and civil. You’re good for the rest of your lives, Love you guys ❤️🇷🇴
Unhitch the van as soon as you start to spinning the wheels. Stay well away from the waters edge. Get an airbag capable of lifting your vehicle. A working winch is a must for soft conditions.
BEST VIDEO EVER!!! 5 mins in I gave a thumbs up, then…1/4 in wanted to give another, 1/2 way another and then another and another! Wish RU-vid had this option. BEST video EVER!!!!
Absolutely unbelievable!! Amazing you got out! If you haven't looked into this idea yet, a land anchor might be a good tool to add to your recovery gear. It's a giant spade that you hook your winch to, and as you winch, it digs itself into the ground, giving you a recovery spot anywhere you need it! Great videos i enjoy watching 👌
Well!!!, what a mammoth effort from you two, I never thought you would get out of that bog so well done and it's great to see a show at last that is all aussie and looking forward to more so keep it up and good luck Cheers
RU-vid algorithm just gave you a blessing throwing your vid up in the recommended videos. Your wife's just smiling on... glad she's belly down in the muck.
Oh, so sorry for you guys, happened to me years ago, in Saskatchewan, Canada, on a smaller scale and no kids AROUND, yet, went home with blisters on my hands, way back when….cheers.
got in a similar situation but not so severe on the Connie Sue heading towards Cocklebiddy last November, did lots wrong. after getting stuck, dug for about 6 hours, stopped. slept the night and thankfully was able to winch out with more digging the next day. The previous night was the best storms I've experienced in my lifetime...
Your videos are amazing, you have a beautiful family. I have always wanted to visit Australia, but know that I and to old, you have taken me to do that, good luck and I'll be watching, thank you.
