Hi Everyone! Well, just after we got home from dropping off Jerry and Judy’s 1969 VW Cabriolet Lemon Drop, we got a text that Miss Lemon Drop had pooped out and was dead on a quiet side street. Heidi and I threw tools and a camera in the car and headed down to see what we could do to get that cute little car home. We run you through the complete diagnostic and eventual solution of this real nail-biter! Was it something I did during the service??? Will we get the car running and back home??
We hope you enjoyed the video. If you did, please give it a “Thumbs up” and Subscribe to Heidi and Franny’s Garage for more videos to come. Also, click the little “Bell” by the Subscribe button to get notified when we release new videos - usually Saturday mornings.
We do lots of types of videos on this channel: Vlogs, How To/Hacks/DYI, Travel, Events, etc. Check out some of the other videos we have on our channel.

Okay... this is an awesome video. I used to run two mechanics garages in my younger days. Many years have passed and I am currently getting back into it. But what do I find today? Computer technicians with absolutely no diagnostic abilities. If the OBD scan doesn't tell you what's wrong, then they can't help you. This video is the perfect example of old school troubleshooting. It takes real talent to crawl down that rabbit hole and properly analyze the causes of mechanical problems. Great freakin' job. I just love this video. Thanks so much for making it.

That is a problem with the fuel pump rods as there are too sizes, one for the generator and one for the alternator. Also when I install a mechanical fuel pump I put some wheel bearing grease under the fuel pump were the rod meets the pump arm. Great channel keep it up.

Great video, Franny! A real time troubleshooting, a challenge when we are far from home. The brazilian beetles share the same fuel pump, rod pump, and bakelite flange for either generator or alternator engines. the pump rod must be 8mm ( 5/16) at its lowest point and 13mm ( 1/2) at the highest point. If you don't reach that mark, you shoud stack 2 or 3 paper gaskets if the height is more than 1/2 inch, or you should sand the surface of the flange a little bit if you don't reach the max 1/2 inch. Besides, the low quality pumps we find here today sometimes call for a "finetuning" in the pump rod height. A little height, your engine will work fine until you reach a highway or put some load on the engine. Too much height and the pressure goes up, overcomes the needle valve/ float pressure on the carburetor, thus altering all the metering until you have a dripping carburetor. Congratulations on your work, we love those real troubleshotings! By far the best videos about vws in english!
@HeidiandFranny

Thanks you so much Marcelo! Thanks for the specifics on the pumps and rod heights. That is very helpful :) It did have me scratching my head a bit, but after a bit of research on the different pumps, I was able to piece together what happened. One thing I didn't mention was that after the service I upped the main jet from a 120 to 132 to try and correct a low speed stumble under load. That helped a lot (along with a degree more advance), but I bet then the pump could no longer keep up. Thank you for your comment! Wonderful to hear from the Teacher :) Franny

Gearing up (pun intended) to help and buddy on a VW build looking for a refresher and landed hear and enjoyed your video. I got stuck in a toll booth in my first car (Datsun B210) while on the way to the beach. I had my GF crank it over while I looked to see what the problem was and I noticed the coil arcing due to the encrusted oil... I used tape head cleaner I had in the glove box to degrease and away we went!

I replaced my fuel pump on my 73 SB and the previous owner had put so much grease in the bottom of the pump for the actuator arm that the grease worked its way up and started to dirty-up the diaphragm and put grease into the fuel stream. My lesson; yes, use grease to lube the rod but don't overdue it.

This was aggravating to watch. When the previous owner first combined the alternator pump with the long pushrod, I can guarantee that the hard plastic guide for the pushrod broke. That's the reason for the pushrod movement problem. I waited and waited for you to pull the plastic block. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 6 лет назад
Yup... Always fun to step into the middle of someone else's work and try to figure out what the heck. I did a later video replacing the pump and testing. Jerry (the owner and gentleman in the video) says the car is running great now. The tune was interesting on the car and the jets in the carb were way too small. It took a bit to get this all happy again.

My 63’ , 40 hp had a problem where the pushrod would hang in the sleeve and the car would stall especially if it was a hot engine, about 10 miles down the road. The solution was to ream out the sleeve with a rat tail file so there was clearance for the pushrod. I figured this out on my own without a mechanic. The Complete Idiots Guide was invaluable. +Alessandro Costa I went and checked out Marcelo’s video on the yellow beetle Quindim. It is very cute and what is not to love! I also noticed that Quindim looks like a fancy dessert from Brazil. I learned something new. As far as the name Lemon Drop goes, I had a bit to do with that adorable car’s name. I used to have a cockatiel that had yellow checks and not orange ones, so we named her lemon drop, after the candy. I suggested the name to Judy. She loved it and it has stuck with her beetle. She will make special appearances on our channel now and then. Hugs to your little girl Julia. You must show her Miss Eva as well. She even has her own story and following. There are several videos about Miss Eva’s story. Heidi

I'm getting a 71 Super Beetle Convertible ready to sell for a very close friend who is the second owner. Were having the same issue after he had someone put a new pump on it back in 2007. The car never ran right so he parked it. Now I'm task at getting it running and after a couple attempts it felt like it was running out of fuel. But he insisted a new pump was installed. I bet...and wonder. This is a great video for saving you from going crazy wondering what was done. With these cars you've got to play detective sometimes. Franny, you are a genius. Loved the video, these trouble shooting style videos are so watchable. I have a 1974 VW Beetle and after watching this I think I have the exact same problem. I bought my 74' bug of a guy who had put in an electric fuel pump and lots of other modern mods. I decided I wanted the engine as original as it could get so I had my bug overhauled replacing items like the air filter for the oil pan filter. One of the other items was to return to a mechanical fuel pump like the one on Jerry's car. It wasn't soon after all this work that I had the problem of the car just not starting. My remedy was a little different.I found the carburettor filled with fuel and after taking the carburettor jet out and blowing it through the car started.. with a lot of cranking and its still the case today. If I don't drive the car for over a day its really hard to start the car again I have to crank and press the accelerator a lot to eventually get fuel into the carb and have it run. When it does start to run, it runs well enough but does if I leave it on idle it sometimes choke out. You've got me thinking that maybe I should check the push rod. I'm going to check out your video on replacing a classic VW Beetle fuel pump.

While driving many VW Beetles over many years, within the first few seconds I could hear the engine is not getting fuel. The first thing I would have done is to check if there is sufficient fuel in the tank, you don't want to do all the troubleshooting to find out at the end there is no fuel in the tank. Greetings from South Africa.

Great channel, just subscribed! I just bought a '71 Super in Phoenix and drove it to Wisconsin at the end of July (2019). The guy I bought it from said he'd drive it across country and I trusted him. It actually made it and only broke once - in the mountains of Arizona. The coil wire (of all things) was arcing to the negative terminal on the coil. So, I swapped the ends around and voila, it went the rest of the way home with minimal issues. In fact, I averaged 31.7 mpg! One thing that did have me concerned was the flooding it would do when stopped for refueling. So, when I arrived home and got some rest, I took the carburetor apart and found a piece of hose material in the needle/seat. This problem is typically caused by putting old hoses back on the fittings. The guy I bought if from said he put a larger jet in it so it would run cooler in Phoenix which is understandable. Upon disassembly, I noticed that it has a 130 jet, but it seems to run a bit fat (rich) at idle and I cannot get it to idle smooth. I didn't actually measure the jet and it could have been drilled out, I don't know. It's a 34PICT-3 and yes I adjusted the mixture and air bleed properly. So, I welcome your thoughts on whether or not you think it may be the main jet, or possibly something else. Maybe float setting/position?

Had a problem with a mustang drove me nuts dove for a will then it would stop then it would start again. Finally found out it was a fine mesh filter in the gas tank what a bad place to put a filter I removed it and put an inline in. Love your show.

Those little things can drive you nuts! Great find! The 356 has a similar filter as does the 3.2 Carrera.

Great roadside repair! I have moved my fuel filter on the other side of the firewall to help save my car from another fire. Fire happened because the fuel line I bought from the Irish sounding auto parts store which said “fuel” on it turned to goo in three months and leaked out on my hot engine. I went back to a dedicated VW parts supplier for an original woven style line. The line had turned to goo on the transmission side as well. Thanks to a chef who ran out with an extinguisher and saved my bug. Mine had lost it’s pressure. So always check your extinguisher, bugs are too precious to loose in a fire. Excellent Production. Learned many thing about tune up’s from you. And I’ve been doing mine for 35 years.

Come to think of it when I was in Germany back in '73 a local VW expert (everyone in Germany is a VW expert) showed me how to adjust the height of my fuel pump to get maximum fuel pressure by stacking gaskets. I was amazed at how a gasket changed the fuel pressure. I've owned a haft dozen bugs, they are so easy to fix and so easy to catch on fire. 90% of all my fires (6) have been from the pressed in fitting coming out of the carburetor. So thinking about it now maybe by increasing the fuel pressure too much over rode the spring the the fuel just hydraulic the fitting out...and that's why all my cars and trucks have fire extinguishers now..

That Chopin was perfect. I needed something longing and that hit the mark. I wish we had some slo-mo of Lemon driving off, but there was a stupid car horn alarm going off so we didn't film. Should have... I wouldn't have needed the sound :( Happy Thanksgiving to you too! Franny

I never put the fuel filter in the engine room. I place the fuel filter before the firewall.

George here. Had a similar problem. Driving a '71 VW camper and notice a oil temp rise over time. One hot day while traveling we stopped at a DQ and tried to start the VW. It started then stopped. It was 90 degrees outside temp. My answer ah vapor lock. Went into a grocery store and got some cold lemons, split them and put them over the fuel line to condense the gas vapor to liquid. It worked,but not long after. The fuel pump rod was to short. The tip that rides on the dizzy cam was not tempered. The fix, I took a piece of my leather belt and stuff it between the pump and rod to add the difference. Ah ha, it work, oil temp went down and we went on our way. I got another stock rod from a VW supplier shipped to the motel and fix it. Go thing, did not want to loose my belt or my pants would not stay up. Ha Ha

That was impressive work.I just stumbled across your channel.Quite impressed. Heres a pro tip on fuel pump-if you lose the rod that holds the pump lever in the fuel pump you can use your dipstick to poke through there to get you home.Don't forget though to cover up fuel stick hole.

You guys are awesome! And, it makes me sad that cars are over designed these days so that it isn't easy to diagnose the problem without some kind of super computer with an OBD II here, an OBD II there, half a dozen electronic leads, an Electronics Engineering degree and other things I can't afford...

Yes, always get the kit, for either the Generator or Alternator. And if you save your spare change, buy an electric pump and keep it with the car as an emergency pump, just to get you home.

As always, a great and informative video! You two are the best of RU-vid! One thing wrong I noticed. Not with your work or the fuel pump but with the convertible top. It has been put down wrong. I own a 68 Beetle convertible, I have wowed other countless owners with this little bit of knowledge over my 45 years of ownership. When putting the top down on pre-73 VW Beetle convertibles, once the top is vertical before you push it fully backwards pull/push the material, that's the headliner, the padding and the top rearward to clear it all from of the folding mechanicals. Once it's all been pushed back the top will lay flat and you will gain about 40% more vision out of your rearview mirror. I didn't make this trick up. It's actually in the owners manual but who ever reads an owners manual. Do this and you will be amazed. Also when this is done you'll find a hook on each side of the top mechanism that you never noticed before that holds the now folded top in place. Pull the hook back and look closely you'll find a little tab above it that the hook grabs, you'll have to mash the top down maybe another half inch for the the two to meet and mate.

It is not our car and I think there was an issue with his top. Thanks for the info.

I never realized there were two different size rods for the stock fuel pump . I converted to an alternator on my 71 beetle and put an electric rotary fuel pump in the front just under the fuel tank .
