I’ve read somewhere that seals that are unsuccessful during mating season are so petty, they will find pups and torture them to death to discourage other females from mating with other seals. So basically, some seals are incels
Seals have lion-like mating practices, so if an alpha bull elephant seal is driven off or killed before their pups reach maturity, other bull elephant seals will enter into the old alpha bull's herd/harem and try to run off or kill the bull elephant seal pups in order to make the female elephant seals receptive to mating again. Usually, this results in the old alpha bull's harem/herd being broken up from a single herd of a few dozen being split into several smaller herds of four to eight, not including any male elephant seal pups that managed to survive or any female seal pups that will grow into new potential members of the new herds/harems in the future.
serious comment: i read that some male seals that dont get a chance to mate will get so salty that they will kill baby seals to discourage the female seals from mating till the following season when they will get another chance to try to knock one up.
This is apparently typical behavior of young males toward calves during breeding season. Infanticide is common, and aggression like this is, also. Males will find an unguarded calf and kidnap it, keeping it close to them if it tries to escape, biting it, shaking it, and lying on top of it. Exactly why this occurs is uncertain but it may be part of a drive to kill pups so that the females becomes receptive to mating again.
You're probably right, although adult male Elephant Seals are usually kindest to the Pups. However this is a very young adolescent-adult male so, he's young & dumb.
I can't believe it's trying to kill the pup, it could have done that with ease. It's trying to restrain the pup and keep it for his own nefarious purposes!

We get our cruelty from animals since we evolved from them. Technically it’s a method for survival. Sad but true. Just try to be aware of your own flaws and it’ll be easier to forgive other people. It’s helped me a lot to let go of that which I can’t control; I can only control myself 🙂
wow, that was hard to watch.. it seems that he's really trying to punish him, or even kill the poor young calf... I wonder if it's his own baby... any explanation?
I read all these comments from people saying, "oh why is he doing that, he is being mean, he is trying to kill the pup" Why don't you go watch some elephant seal mating videos. The behavior he is exhibiting toward the pup is the same behavior you will see from a male courting a female. I know all you people just cannot accept that mother nature would allow for a grown male to try and breed babies, however mother nature does not care about human ideologies. This is a young male that has the urges to mate and he does not care what it is with. The pup could not get away from him so the pup is getting his unwanted attentions that the older males will not allow him to express toward the adult females.
That's bullying. The thug is saying, "If I can suffocate you, I will do it." He is treating the pup like a toy. Pups are still innocent and sometimes want to play with the bulls like their buddies. They can be drowned by bulls in swimming hole (where pups practice swimming).
This male seal mightve not been trying to mate with the pup, I think it was trying to kill it by suffocation or weight pressure. It seemed very small compared to the other seal pups, it might have been the runt of its litter. Often times, animals will kill the runt of its litter.
Honestly the biting at the start almost seems like the male was trying to help the baby molt, since the baby's black fur looks patchy. That being said the stance the male took and the biting after that seemed a bit more aggressive than helpful.
I think it was a rough curiosity that could have gone in either direction. If the bull wanted to kill him for sure, I would think he be dead. He pretty much put his mouth around his head at the end and didnt bite. It also looked like if the pup was more aggressive in biting it might have been a trigger the bull was waiting to pull but got bored in the end.
Not clear to me what was going on. Possibly the pup was sired by another male, which he might be able to smell. Possibly the pup was a male, and maturing precociously, which the male might also be able to smell. The attention appeared to be to teach the pup a lesson, by dominating behavior.
My Idea to this behavior: This pup was very young, so it must smell like his mother and breeding season normally starts after the females had pups. So this male seal wanted to know wich female this pup belonged to and got a bit carried away because of the smell.
The pup looked healthy/was still nursing atm perhaps was just a few days old, and one of the seals around could be the mother (could be the one approaching after the pup escaped), so I doubt it was abandoned pup. In this situation mothers couldn't do anything since the males are twice their size. Elephant seals behavior is just so confusing, compared to other seal species. Probably too much testosterone inside their huge body. Crabeater seals for example, the males accompany the nursing mother & pup and protect them from predators or other males, though they can be quite aggressive, they don't seem to attack pups this way.
Adults showing interest in offspring or younger members can be due to the fact that they smell like their mothers. Males can get confused and put in ‘mating mode’ when they are around them. Never actually performing incest from what I’ve seen, just being overly touchy.
This is a female. She may think that particular pup has low chance of surviving. This behavior has a double purpose: 1. Teach the pup to defend himself 2. If he’s nor strong enough kill it. We must not humanize nature. This is just how it is.
Every one who thinks the seal crushing the pup your wrong its a young bull he lost a fight and he wants to mate so this is a regular thing for young males
