Alex, younger people like you and many others, these laws are strange. But older Jamaicans myself included knows of these laws as we were taught Civics in school. Cutting that subject from the schools curriculum was a big mistake. They would have to do lots of revision and editing for the changing of the times , but the later Jamaicans would exercise more moral and ethics, I hope !!!. As always very good content.

There is nothing strange about the laws, its not only rope, but pick ax and crowbar, you shouldnt be seen with after 6 pm. people mainly commit heinous crime at night, not day because they can hide more at night. certain equipments are use to break in people homes, business and ropes are use to not only take one's life but also to capture and hold others hostage. it is also illegal to bring liquor and beverage in a bar or club, you are required to pay for it should you decide to do so.

Most of these laws are not particularly strange. I guess the strangest one is the one about purchasing rope. I can't imagine why such a law would exist. On the other hand, ringing doorbells and knocking on peoples' doors unnecessarily is obviously harassment and Jamaica is hardly the only country with such laws in place, same for vagrancy laws. It would be helpful to know how old these laws are and that might also help with understanding why they were passed at the times they were. Many of them, as you noted, probably go back to the Colonial period and were never updated or repealed, such as those relating to opening hours for businesses. Also, how many of these laws are still enforced? Context is always useful.

The Judea Christian belief is that a day starts and ends at sunset so laws generally reflect a 6pm start to the day. That's why weddings and funerals should be completed by 6pm

First of all not being able to purchase ropes in Jamaica at certain time and reason for purchase is a good thing. This actually saved my nephew's life short-term. However he came back to Britain and purchased the rope and hung himself in a graveyard on a tree. That was one of the saddest day in our lives.
