I have listened to the interview, and what I understood from Crispan Mills was that there was a groundswell of feeling (from other bandmates / producers?) against the track being included. Which is astonishing, since it's clearly one of the best songs they've done. This isn't a rough take or a demo, so it's highly unlikely that the tapes would have been "lost" during the album's production - we were already into the digital age - and even if they had, the band could have re-recorded the song!
It was real The way that you came And whispered your name so softly I saw the rack of eternity fall And the jewel there inside shone brightly There’s nothing that’s broken you can’t mend Love is an arrow that you send The folk song There’s nothing that’s stranger When you’re caught in a storm Well how long you try to remember Life’s never ending With strange folk descending On my way On my way
Strangefolk (1999) It was real That terrible night With no signs of life in the darkness Oh for that moment that shadows did pass I could fear it was lost forever I’m standing somewhere in between Love is a child of liberty When I saw that beast And he knew my name It was real it was real it was real Well Saturn was spinning above my grave When life’s never ending With strange folk descending On my way On my way
Wow just wow! Where was this gem hiding all these years? I heard the abridged version on the album but this version is leagues above. What a stunning song, Love it.
Once upon a time, a long long time ago there was a planet floating all alone in space. Miraculously it sustained many forms of life moving and non-moving creatures and they would all take great pleasure in watching the heavens above them revolving in perfect harmonic order. Before televisions and radios existed, before podcasts and internet pornography had even been imagined, families would gather round the fire and they would tell folk the stories to pass the time and take wisdom from the elders. Once upon a time, a god asked a great king 'What is the most amazing thing in the world?'. The king replied that every day a million souls pass into the abode of death and yet none believes that they shall follow
It was real…. It was real…. It was real…. From the beginning to the end Love is an arrow that you send In the beginning was the word And the word was oh kish a vya namaha namaha In the beginning there was nothing to be heard but oh kish a vya namaha namaha oh kish a vya namaha namaha oh kish a vya namaha namaha oh kish a vya namaha namaha oh kish a vya namaha namaha oohhhh…. oh kish a vya namaha
If you listen to the interview with Roger Morton on the 2010 edition of Peasants, Pigs and Astronauts, they talk about that and explain that the tapes were lost for a long time.

actually, it isn't the 'original' version. that was doen at the same time as golden avatar and other tracks. was to have been the title track of the 'pigs' album
