In the US, the Department of Energy is the part of the federal government that’s in charge of nuclear energy, so they collaborate a lot with the military - you’ll note that the lab guards are US Army MP’s (military police - I think Europeans call them gendarmes). Anyhow, in the real world, the Department of Energy has been involved in shady defense projects, hence the inspiration for this series… Look up Project Montauk and Project MK-ULTRA. MK-ULTRA was referenced in one of the newspaper articles Hopper read in the prior episode.
