No kidding! I had some American friends back in the 80s, and some of them thought that I was a devil-worshipper because I had t-shirts and records from bands like Diamond Head, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Sepultura. After a while they stopped seeing me because of that, but when I ran into other American kids in places like Shinjuku or Akihabara who wore metal t-shirts, I was so excited to talk to them about heavy metal, and they were some of the sweetest people I ever met. There was no pretense. No conceit. We hung out, we listened to some really great music, and I made some much better friends. My daughter absolutely loves heavy metal and we both completely geeked out when we saw Eddie, because he looked exactly like the kind of friends that I used to have. And after watching him GM that game in the first episode, I knew that he was going to be awesome, because he genuinely cared about his party and wasn't the kind of dick that would punish his players for success. He celebrated right with them and was so jubilant in their success. Great character, great music, awesome sub-culture.

@Dustinjlarson
@Dustinjlarson 2 года назад
@@ridelikeagirlaus8751 you’d be surprised. In Minnesota circa 1983 metallica was not aired on any radio, they didn’t have a video till their fourth album, played at first avenue in minneapolis once I think and it’s small. They were much bigger on the west coast at first but even Metallica had to start small. Thrash metal was just budding back then. It wasn’t until the black album that they were mainstream. That was their fifth album.
@RokkitGrrl
@RokkitGrrl 2 года назад
@@ridelikeagirlaus8751 Heavy Metal in the US was a counter culture and most people in the 1980s weren't listening to Metallica, Sepultura, Diamond Head, Iron Maiden, etc. Yes, they drew a lot of crowds at their concerts but saying that they weren't, "some underground indie metal band," is an incredibly facile statement. You wouldn't hear their music on commercial radio stations in the US unless someone at some university station happened to play their music at 2am. MTV's Headbanger's Ball didn't even start until 1987, and Metallica didn't achieve mainstream success until 1991 when their "Black" album started gaining traction. And then Grunge and Pop Punk eclipsed Heavy Metal with groups like NIrvana and Green Day, and that's all she wrote. Those of us who were invested in heavy metal culture in the 1980s endured a lot of criticism from peers, from parents, from community leaders. And they didn't seem to give a crap how long Metallica has been around, nor how many people they drew at their concerts. All they knew was that Satan had a perverse influence over some of us Gen X kids and that we had no moral compass.

Rock and metal isn’t dead at all. It’s the gatekeepers that are so obsessed with not trying to push new boundaries and not willing to give new artists a chance to set and define for what the decade is going to be. @@metalrockstarizer89 people confuse gatekeeping and elitism all the time. But in alot of these instances people aren't gatekeeping. Gatekeeping is trying to keep or discourage someone from listening to certain music or community. Most instances are actually from people upset that a person doesn't listen to the music, but claims to for attention. As for the genre, Metallica's/ Megadeth's style of thrash is long dead. Most thrash now is crossover bc its far easier to write/play.

This is one of those things that's pointless to argue about because people don't define the terms "rock" and "dead". Mainstream rock music hasn't been at the forefront of culture and innovation in forever. Bands like Metallica broadly stood the test of time from when they were popular, but if they released an album today, no one would listen to it. They're still "huge" but not popular. Even though old acts are still more popular than basically anything that isn't a flash in the pan (GvF, Royal Blood, Badflower, Northing but Thieves, even Måneskin) and metal is largely stagnant aside from some people who are trying to reinvent the wheel to mixed results So my take is, rock is dead in a sense, and if metal or rock is ever popular again it's going to be because of some radical artistic movement that most of us wouldn't recognize to some degree
@Obenfiquista81

I've also seen a lot of people complain that he should have played "Ride the Lighting". Bro... MOP came out the year of the show, it's smart they did the more generally popular song than a deeper cut. I'm genuinely impressed & glad it's not some glam song. I'm so excited if this exposed new listeners, but you really can't please everyone. Be happy that a mainstream show created one of the most genuinely metal moments of TV history and played an actual generally undisputed metal classic. It's gatekeeping like this that only hurts the music we love. It's extremely immature to believe there is a "correct" way to be a fan. Good music is good music.

So I look at it like this: As a die hard metalhead, I'm glad to see Master of Puppets was used in the episode. In context of the year the show is set in, it makes a lot of sense. The problem is, metal also gets a lot of disrespect from people who don't understand it, definitely from the Hollywood pod-people. There's always been a fear that metal will be further diluted (and it's already kind of diluted well enough) if corporations and people who don't get it move in on it cause it's popular and trendy. Due to that, gatekeeping is necessary to some extent. Equate that with how we're just barely getting acceptable video game movies out after decades of garbage. While we're now past the moral panic of metal in the 80s, I definitely don't want to interact with those types, unless they're genuinely interested in metal for what it is and the show has given them an exposure to how cool and fun to listen to it really is.

I had never bothered to listen to Metallica before watching Stranger Things, a show I didn't bother to watch until now because I heard the first season was the only good one until this fourth one came around. As a result of the show using Master of Puppets, I listened to the album, and I'm intenting to listen to the rest of Metallica's work. I've even made the decision to try and learn Master of Puppets because I like it and want to be able to play it to other people, all while dedicating the performance to Eddie, the character who plays it in the show, who I really liked. People complaining about shows and films sparking new interest in old music is just stupid. I only got interested in my favourite band, Sigur Ros, because one of their songs, which became second favourite of all time, was used in the end of 127 hours. If the director hadn't decided to use that song for a very important moment in the film, I would never of found a song I hold dear to my heart.

First of all, the Duffer brothers have done an absolutely phenomenal job with the entire sound track to Stranger Things, from day 1. Not a single episode has gone by that I don't catch my wife glaring at my for singing along to whatever song is playing (and I'm a metal head, with a strong appreciation for most 80s music). Metallica is unquestionably bigger than stranger things...though ST is of my all time favorite shows. Metallica has been changing music (for better or worse) since 1981, stranger things since 2016....metallica has longevity. Metallica songs are played regularly on rock radio (including MOP)....and the band is 40+years old...will stranger things be available and watched regularly in 2056??? who knows. But the Duffer brothers specifically went to metallica for permission to use this song because of how well it fit the scene, and really the season. Metallica gave them their blessing, and I have to imagine they couldn't care less about getting arguably their best song ever written on a "spotify" list. (I'll argue that battery is a better song). Anyway, this was just an all around amazing collaboration, and anyone hating on metallica can go ride the lightning....

Metallica has been the most mainstream and most popular metal band. I love Metallica almost as much as the next nutcase, but you have to realize that they appeal to a broader audience and that’s just how it is. Are they sellouts, selling out their passion and creativity, or just innocently investing their time into more lucrative endeavors, creative endeavors or otherwise? They’ve been accused of “selling out” ever since they did the Black album, so… is it really so bad that they’re on the top 50 chart for Spotify?

They have been accused of "Selling out" since RtL, with Fade to Black LMAO There's always that nutcase who says it

They weren't sellouts in 1986, Black Album and older is what I was into starting guitar in 89. The video for Until it Sleeps came out the day before I had a gig. We were all heartbroken. We thought they were going to go more Sepultura Chaos AD style....

"Sellout" is a bs term spat at professionals by whiners who selfishly want an art form all for themselves, trying to guilt someone into giving up the act of taking money for providing a service, product or art. Show me anyone who makes a living doing anything and I'll show you a "sellout." Professional musicians are "sellouts" like professional chefs are "sellouts." Please. People need to get a grip and swing their judgemental pendulums the other way. We're all "sellouts" unless unemployed.

Gatekeepers think they’re the saviors and preservers of all of heavy metal when they are literally the worst part about the whole metal community

The song makes perfect sense in the show. 1.) Because it came out right around the time it takes place. 2.) The character playing it is a huge metal head. 3.) The setting it’s played in is metal asf. 4.) Its played over a sequence where the villain is on the prowl. The lyrics fitting the villain perfectly.

The first time I heard Metallica was their first album kill them all. My brother who was 12 years younger than me and a child of the 1980s was listening to hair bands at the time. He purchased this album said he didn't like it and asked me if I wanted to listen to it and take it home. It was like the first time I heard Black Sabbath I said this is incredible. Like you said people like different types of music. The new audience is learning about a great band mazel tov. Enjoy your Channel and encourage you to keep doing your great work.

Same thing happened with the Kate Bush song called running up that hill. It was released in 1985 or 86, but after being used on the show it's popular again. Funny thing is master of puppets was the first song I heard from Metallica on a late night metal radio station in the 80's. I'm glad if it's reaching a new audience through a TV show.

Anything that gets Metal heard by a new audience is a great thing and if its 80's Metal then all the better. Im an 80's kid, I was 16 when Master of Puppets came out and a big time head banger. Eddie's scene grabbed me at the back of the head where my long hair used to be and slammed my face back into an era that I loved so much. Its didnt just give me some nice fuzzy nostalgic buzz, it bored deep into my core like a jackhammer in a way that only 80's Thrash Metal can. Loved it loved it loved!

Big Metallica fan and that scene was frigging awesome! Great to see people discovering an absolutely classic 80’s metal tune - who cares if they haven’t heard it before, hopefully people get stuck into the rest of the back catalogue. Running Up that Hill was also an inspired score choice, I think the only thing I am slightly offended by is that nobody is talking about the fact they used Play With Me by Extreme… such an underrated band!

I'm 28 and couldn't be more happier when my brother (15) came to me talking about the Master of Puppets scene. We talked about Metallica and he said: "Ok, i'll try the Metallica stuff. Souds cool." 🤘

I haven’t watched it yet, but I’m stoked that Metallica was in the show! Everyone complaining should be thankful it wasn’t glam rock or worse, synth pop

I was at church one Sunday several years ago and the preacher was doing his sermon. He started quoting something and I sat there trying to figure out where I heard those words. It hit me just before he said "Master of Puppets." He did a whole sermon on Master of Puppets and how drugs become your master.
