Strangest Reactions to Lifeguard Rescues 

Don't carry on like a pork chop. Listen to your lifeguards.

I know H gets a lot of crap for his personality but sometimes people don’t get it if you’re nice about it. He’s like a bitter older man but he genuinely cares about each and every person out at Bondi that’s what makes his tough love approach effective.

Once, when I was lifeguarding, I had a woman who was teaching her three-year-old to swim by the sink or swim method. I had lifeguarded for 20 years and taught over 2,000 infants to swim I told her " ma'am you have to keep your child within arm's reach and don't force him to drown like that". She told me "it's fine don't worry about it." She obviously had no idea how to teach swimming. Well she did it again and the child was going under and became the perfect definition of a distressed swimmer. Struggling to make forward progress and keep his head above the water. So, I had to jump in and grab the child. A perfectly easy rescue. So, we called them out of the water and had to write a report. She told my boss that I must be a rookie lifeguard because her child was perfectly fine. Then, she asked her son, "I wasn't making you drown was I?" And her son was smart enough to look at her and not his head and say yes. Then I had the opportunity to tell her that I've been teaching swimming for 20 year's as a certified instructor and that this is no way to teach a child to swim. Basically, mom was too cheap to put the kid and swim lessons. parents, if you don't know how to swim and you're not good with aquatics then get somebody qualified to teach your children. Then, maybe these Bondi lifeguards won't have to make so many rescues it's no joke when your child drowns.

I hope that young girl learned a valuable lesson. Choose better friends. Not only did they leave you, they thought everything was funny. Freaking sad. Edit: omg that poor man at the end😭😂👀👀

i genuinely don't understand why people who can't swim or come from landlocked countries don't listen to lifeguards & think its funny that they nearly drowned. You do an amazing job boys in blue, can't wait to come and see you again when I can travel interstate :)

I've lived in Asia for half of my life- for clarity, a lot of people laugh when they're nervous or have an uncomfortable emotion. Laughing can be an acceptable way to express the discomfort, so a lot of emotions are channeled that way, including, 'OMG I almost just died."

I’m with H on that one. The number of times I’ve had to restrain myself from getting pissed at people, who blatantly ignored my warnings just to end up relying on me for help, is ridiculous.

With the young Koreans laughing after they were rescued, it's cultural. Their nervous laughter, which actually sounds like genuine "ha ha" laughter, is to throw shade on embarrassment and is common in Korea. It's this discrepancy between the seemingly genuine laughter and the seriousness of the situation is what made the lifeguards upset (and rightly so). Obviously the Koreans felt shame and embarrassment though.

The last clip, the way his daughter rolls her eyes when he gets the cast on his neck is telling.

3:50 I heard laughing is actually one of the humans "fear relief" reactions really... Just recently we got our boat partially sunk on a trip about half a mile off the shore and half of the group couldn't stop laughing, even though we had just one life jacket and had to swim almost to the beach until someone spotted us in trouble... But damn, I agree with H every time hahah, there's a bloody yellow sign there!

I appreciate H's anger. Some people, especially those who think they are invincible, are too hard headed for kind words.

Wow, the last lady was unbelievable! If my family member like my future husband was like that, I'd be depressed for who knows how long. Shows she doesn't care much to be mad at her very injured husband. I'd never be mad at my injured family members!

In some Asian cultures (Korean especially) they laugh when they're embarrassed or nervous. They are laughing at themselves and to avoid losing face. It's just a difference in culture and cultural behaviour and shouldn't be misinterpreted as disrespect.

Woo hatsoff to the patience you life guards have. Saving people's lives and them laughing it off on their faces like nothing happened. I would have broken their teeth. I love 'H' man for that 😂 he is raw 😂😂❤️❤️

My brother passed away after he drowned at a beach close to were I live in the UK and it makes me super upset and angry that a lot of those kids were just laughing after the lifeguards literally saved their lives and they are now able to go home to their families.

I love H. He is very passionate About what he is doing. And people that do stupid things not only risk their lives but those with them and the rescuers.

That woman at the end was so ungrateful. My brother hit his head on christmas eve and he had to stay with one parent for 4 days. christmas was ruined for all of us and non of us whinged once. grow up.

i used to surf at bondi and the amount of times i've had to assist life guards is kinda scary, like they're told not to swim, but they do anyway. I wish people listened more

In regards to all the comments on the Canadian's wife kicking off at her hubby; I worked in healthcare for years and his behaviour screamed out faker to me, we used to call them 'hosipital hoppers'. Look at the way his daughter rolled her eyes in a 'here we go again' way at 11.57 when they put the neck brace on. His wife's comments about riding in ambulances suggested this happens commonly. I say shame on him for pushing her to breaking point and scaring his poor children.

Lots of people have different reactions when in near death scenarios so laughter is probably what I would go for too honestly.

Rescuers do an incredible job. I don't think the swimmers know how close they are to drowning sometimes, if the lifeguards weren't watching it would not be remembered as a pleasant day at the beach.

That wife was one toxic one, she literally DIDN'T care about her husband and that he is in pain, but she only cared about the holiday!? Like bruh is a holiday more important than your husband? I got caught in a riptide in 1967 @Ocean City, MD when I was 19, and barely made it back to shore. I collapsed on the beach and was totally ignored. That was the 3rd of my 9 lives. At my age, I've lost count which number I'm on now.

to be fair, laughing after life or death situations is actually quite a common stress response, and all it takes is for one person in a group to get that response for it to trigger for everyone else. your body is relieved the stresslevels went down and is trying to cope with the adrenaline and trauma
