The unfortunate tree that began as a host to the Stranger Fig offspring is inevitably killed as the epiphytic fig outgrows it! Stranger Fig trees, Ficus sp., really do strange and eventually kill by smothering, strangling and out-competing its host tree for Florida. The native Florida strangler fig, Ficus aurea, is actually a very important tree in the southern Florida and considered a "keystone species". It is a keystone species because many species are dependent upon this tree, common to "hammocks" of the Florida everglades for both food and habitat. When this tree is absent, many of these species decline or disappear entirely.
