Paradigmatic shifts in the business landscape, known as inflection points, can either create new, entrepreneurial opportunities (see Amazon and Netflix) or they can lead to devastating consequences (e.g., Blockbuster and Toys R Us). Only those leaders who can “see around corners”-that is, spot the disruptive inflection points developing before they hit-are poised to succeed in this market.
In this session, Columbia Business School Professor and renowned Thinkers50 management thinker, Rita McGrath discusses 8 practices that can help leaders see around corners with their businesses.

The 8 Practices to See Around Corners (paraphrased): 1. Have direct contact with the edges of your business and your customers 2. Encourage diverse perspectives 3. Have dedicated teams to explore the edges 4. Provide the encouragement and resources to make many small bets 5. Get out and explore; conferences, educational opportunities, diverse networks 6. Create incentives to tell the truth in your organization 7. Get the senior leadership team out of denial 8. The future is here, it's just not mainstream

Nice. 1. Know and keep revising your 'why', and your 'vision'. Both are shaped, driven, and explored by serving your customers. 2: when a team member gets stuck, encourage, none of this 'bring me solutions not problems' trash-talk. If a team member needs help you can use this to coach them, guide their growth and build their critical capacity. If its at the C-level, of course, sack them if they can't fire their own rockets. 6: vital, make sure you will get all the bad news. 7: get them on or near the front line and the customer as often as possible 8. this is meaningless flubb and unactionable 'motherhood' tripe. Rather: know where your market is heading, what is in the wings, free your team to innovate and keep innovating the small things. Of course, Demings 14 rules still largely apply.

A company can choose to just acquire companies - Facebook is a good example. Why should they expect to "guess" the next big thing? A seek-and-destroy strategy. Though, they will never articulate it as such.
