Thank you, John, for the great videos of Scottish landscape and talking of the history. They are all very interesting. My mother's family are Douglas descendants. As a matter of fact they come from Douglas, Ontario, Canada but I don't know if they are from the Black or Red Douglas. However I recently learned that my great grandfather was named James and his brother was named Robert.

Your very welcome and glad you are enjoying. Sorry I’ve not had any recent material up but will do asap. Still improving my technique in order to get the history across better to the viewer. I love the Douglas history and luckily I have a lot on my doorstep. Definitely a subject I want to cover more. I didn’t know there was a Douglas in Canada. What is the history of the settlement, do you know? Was it people from Douglas or named after a Douglas? The blacks and reds were cousins so could be both. Was your great grandfather Scottish? I see you have a border clan name. Elliott’s were border reivers (another fascinating part of our history)

Hi John. I've only learned about my Great-grandfather a little while ago. He died when my grandmother was young. Her uncle Robert helped her mother to move with other family to Saskatchewan 1000+ miles away. A trip to Douglas, Ontario is at least 3 hours away and it looks like a small place north of Ottawa, our capital city. I will see what I can find out from here first.

I got rescued from the top in 1976. It's full of old mattresses and beer cans.. The sewage works down the hill is even more interesting. I see the rope swing is gone. I might be misremembering, but I think about 10 feet more of the side of tower seems to have beenlost

Rescued? Had you climbed it? I’ve not been to sewage works. Aye swings come and go. Made some cool but dangerous ones of those in my day around stonehouse lol

John, I'm trying to figure out whether the tower on the nearby Douglas Castle property is original to the first castle or built in the 1700s. I ask because these 2 towers seem similar in design in that they both have those rings at thirds, so to speak. Do you have an opinion as to the Douglas tower? This was a fantastic video and I hope you do more. I'm interested in seeing castles from the Bruce era up close like this. It doesn't matter that they are crumbling for my purposes. Thank you for doing this!

they do look similar yes. The surviving tower at Douglas is the last surviving piece of the second last period of construction on that site (1700s i think). When they built the final large stately home they kept it as a garden ornament.

1534 was after spanishand portuguese inquisition lots of people went to scotland that time hence with the tittle black douglas
@MhorScotland
@MhorScotland 2 года назад
Yeah? I hadn’t heard that. The original black Douglas did date back to the time of Wallace / Bruce and seems to have stuck. The Douglas clan was divided between the blacks and the reds. The Red side did the dirty on the their cousins (the blacks) and took most of their lands after 1455

In 1286, James Douglas, Lord Douglas, known as Good James Douglas was born. He was also known as the Black Douglas. Not sure about the information for immigration but the Black Douglas family was around since shortly after William the Conqueror came to power in England.
