It’s been two weeks since the Strava Fiasco™ began. Now it's time for Episode 2.
Strava decided to increase pricing at varying rates, up to doubling the price for some monthly users. This would apply to their most populous regions/countries, but ultimately to all users. Except, they didn’t tell anyone. Instead, they sent out a boilerplate renewal notice that your subscription was renewing at a higher rate. Meanwhile, when people checked what their renewal price was on the site, it’d show an incorrect lower price. This led me to ask Strava’s PR department what was going on, which triggered a Strava press release, which in turn led to me asking (again) what the actual listed price of Strava was (since it wasn’t listed anywhere). They refused to state it or answer. All of which basically blew up the internets, in both athletic and mainstream media. Got it? Good.
Fast forward to this week and Strava has finally made some changes. First, they updated a slate of pages across their site, making it easier to figure out what your new price will be. Second, they’ve posted an apology of sorts, albeit posted to a location you’ll likely never see. And third, as part of their new pricing page, they’ve seemingly violated a slate of EU laws around pricing and consumer rights.
In this vidoe, I’m gonna dig through it all, including checking Strava pricing in an absurd number of countries. So, let’s get started.

This was both exceedingly fair and incredibly well researched. Someone (or a handful of people) at Strava are making unadvisedly opaque moves, not only in failing to clearly inform customers what to expect regarding their subscription rates, but also in failing to simply respond to you as an extremely well known reviewer and influencer when you made polite and on-point inquiries. My guess is that there is a level of uncertainty and continuity on the corporate side that is causing the subpar public-facing statements. As an retired government attorney for many years, I can promise that your discussion of European Union pricing regulations will definitely light a fire in Strava’s legal department. The EU pricing was clearly shortsighted and liable to result in some financial pain.

Thanks for keeping up with this. I cancelled my subscription not strictly because of the price increase (although it's a very sizable one), but because of how shady they have been about it. The fact that I didn't even know the amount was going to change unless I saw these videos is unbelievable for me. Going to continue using it as a free user unless I switch to something else in the future or they move more things behind their paywall.

The reason why Strava won't explain it (truthfully) is because their intention from the beginning was to quietly push these price increase hoping it would fly under the radar. Users would moan but continue to renew. Strava is being operated by some pretty shady corporate suits who could careless about transparency.

I feel for Strava in a way; seems that someone pushed a button too fast and people started noticing stuff (some misunderstanding, testing on production or that one intern). That of course didn't allow them to make a proper campaign and forced to deal with milk already spilled, which kinda got them too stressed about it. What I cannot understand is their stand. Seems like they just don't know how to stand up to their challenge now appropriately.
@liquidSpin

@@wojciechbladowski542 pushed a button too quickly? That one intern? 1. They can certainly undo it if they "accidentally" pushed the updates when they weren't ready. I'm not saying it's right, but maybe (apart from the Scandinavian EU countries) Germany residents have the highest standard of living compared to many poorer EU countries so they can get away with it. I know that doesn't really work though either because some areas of Germany are richer than other more deprived areas (but if you are setting prices you can really only do it at country level). I don't blame you for cancelling, I did it a few years ago when I needed to save money and realised that I just want using the features offered that are only available on their paid subscription, in fact I don't use it at all now, GarminConnect does everything I need it to.

What I also wondered after watching your previous video, is whether or not Strava is breaking (EU) tax laws by not allowing you to set a country for your account. Dutch tax law states that digital services are to be taxed (VAT) in the customer's country of residence. So if you created a Strava account in the US, then moved to the Netherlands, your Strava account needs to become a Dutch one (at least fiscally); which would imply you're also being charged the Dutch prices. To determine your physical location, Strava would at least need a billing address (which somehow they don't have for my account - just a CC number), which for due dilligence they could cross-reference with a GeoIP lookup (which is a trick they like to use apparently). So not only are the per-country prices fishy and likely illegal; they may also be breaking tax laws.

I hate the annual (or monthly) subscription model. It almost always depends on people forgetting that they have signed up or cancelling in time. I have often searched for the option to buy a year's service without my card details being held (for my "convenience") along with auto-renewal.
@totaltrials

You just purchase your subscription then cancel it straight away, it'll last for the amount of time you paid for. I usually do this for most subscriptions, pay for a month and cancel straight away. When it runs out I do the same again, that way I don't forget about the subscriptions I don't use all year round.

Cancelled my subscription yesterday. I will not tolerate the violation of my EU customer rights by a US company and to pay the highest rates in the world. Disclosure: I originally went for the premium membership due to Ray. Don't really use the premium content but wanted to support what they are doing and acknowledge the improvements. FY Strava.

Very interesting! I live in Switzerland and we are used to pay more than others countries just because we potentially can (Netflix case is a good example and Canal+ as well). They forget that people are not silly. And the result is that I changed my subscription to the free one… In french, we say “dégât d’image”

Will be interesting to see how the EU handles this. They have gone after far bigger tech companies than strava in the past. After 9 years I cancelled both my and my son’s premium subscription. While I use Strava everyday, I actually rarely look at the premium features. Thanks for your exceptional research and presentation.

I just chose to cancel my membership because of this. Here's the message I wrote for anyone else wondering. In addition, you'll stay at the premium member level until the renewal date specified on your account. I dislike the lack of transparency surrounding your recent price increases and the lack of communication surrounding that. I will find another company to do business that chooses to treat their customers with care and respect.

In 2019 I bought a Strava subscription because it gave me an extra 2 months if I bought the year subscription. I did it for 60 usd. When it came last year to renew in December I noticed it was going to be 100. I was like what is going on hahaha. This is a joke. So I decided not to renew. My subscription expired on December 15. Then I remember just randomly looking into my Strava account on New Year’s Eve. They literally did not mention this to ANYONE it was on the blog. They were selling the year subscription for 60 usd. So I got it at that point. Whoever runs their PR or announcements literally needs to be taught how to properly announce these things. If it wasn’t for that I’d be using IDK nike fitness or soemthjnf

It doesn't help with their price increase and the sneaky way they've gone about it but there is a way to change your country of subscription, which I was told about by Strava support when I emailed about moving countries: 1. Cancel your Strava subscription and wait until it runs out and downgrades to being a free account 2. Wait a day or so and pay your Strava subscription - which will be priced according to your country based on your IP address when you pay. One could, for example, use Surfshark VPN to set your country to Brazil (the cheapest country for Strava) and from now on your subscription will be set and renew to Brazillian price plans.

I’ve been using strava for years but like many, can’t justify the new price and just am frustrated with their business practices. They keep adding features we don’t need and charging us for them. Can you make a video on what you think will be “the next” strava or just compare some of the other platforms?
Год назад
Thanks for this. I cancelled, but maybe not mostly due to the price itself, it's just that you reminded me that I basically don't use the features of strava enough for it to be worth paying for. Also, they behave extremely "guilty" and I don't like that.

Canada always gets some of the worst pricing, for everything. The US "looks" to have a worse deal because of the exchange rate, but the salaries are the same or lower in Canada in local units. So Canada does get a much worse deal than the US.

Big companies like Amazon and cable companies do this all the time. Also with other policies - remember when prime meant 2 day shipping? Now it just means "free shipping" (that you pay a membership fee for) and I've regularly clicked on items labeled as prime that won't arrive for 4-5 days.

I’m in the U.S., I’ve been paying the monthly rate at $7.99 and on my account page it says my monthly membership will renew at $11.99. There is a link that says “Why am I seeing a different price than expected?”, when I click it it tells me that “You will receive notice of your updated price 30 days before your renewal date.” I didn’t receive any notification and the renewal date is less than 30 days away. This is the first I’m hearing of the price change.

I had commented on one of your previous videos that the reason Strava is jacking up the prices is because of their recently introduced capability to upload videos to activities and the unanticipated increase in their storage costs because of this. The information I found is that, although each video is limited to 30 seconds, there is NO LIMIT on the number of videos you can upload per activity. I just tested this out and it seems to be true as I uploaded 101 videos to a single activity. Only limitation I was able to find was that, on their web application, it displays only 100 videos. It seems the app still allowed me to see all 101, although I may have lost count somewhere along the line. So bottom line is I plan to keep my subscription and pay the new $79.99 per year price, but I plan to get my moneys worth so I'm going all out loading videos until their servers pop.

I'm not only happy for living in Sweden with the low price, and no planned price increase, but also that I can use my yearly fitness reimbursement I get from work to pay for it. Aside from the EU regulations and the sketchy communication, there is nothing unusual about pricing goods/services differently in different markets. The so called "default price" markets are likely those in which the uptake is so low that they don't really justify bothering to set individual pricing.

Another option, albeit more of a technical burden for Strava, would be to offer different "tiers" of features - if someone doesn't care about new features, let them keep paying what they pay for the features they currently have and not provide new things to them, but make a new tier for the new stuff. Strava Free (all the free stuff), Strava Plus (the features we had before heatmaps and such), Strava Premium (maybe they add more features), Strava Ultra (another set of features), Strava Max (even more features), etc. The downside is you end up with confusion - what plan you are on, what you get, etc. It's not perfect, but surely it's better public relations than a hidden price hike, disguised as country-based pricing.
