In this video I build a dust cyclone using a street cone and a 5 gal bucket
I use a couple pieces of scrap plywood and a 8 foot 2x4 for supports
I also use a propane torch to heat up some 2 inch PVC to fit my shop vac hose .
This is a cost effective way to build a dust cyclone for a shop vac that anyone can make for just a few bucks with a few parts
Stuff I used in the video

There is so much brilliance in this video : rotating table tops; circle jig; aluminum bat as cone cutter; PVC melt-joining... Thanks for posting!!

"Brilliance" or "oddity?" That "brilliant" aluminum bat punch is definitely *very* sketchy. 1st off, I can think of a dozen better uses for an old bat. 2nd It is SO EASY to cut that material with snips. Faster, better, safer, & you get the size hole you want. I've built hold-punches for commercial applications and this punch is as bad as they come. I've never seen worse. This whole bat thing struck me as the result of not having sufficient analytical skills to come up with a better solution. PVC melt-joining is "brilliant?" I can't be the only one that routinely works with plastics. FYI it's kind of a normal thing to do in joining plastics. Not all plastics can be joined this way, each plastic has particular characteristics and some will join themselves readily, other's won't at all. Some offer a weak joint, some a strong, it's all variable. I'm guessing you're kind of new at making stuff, or perhaps just a drunken bromance post, whichever I do agree with you on the rotating table. That was snazzy.

For just a country 'ol boy. (Seemingly) You do very good work! Thought at first... Oh Boy!!! Not another poorly done You tube video. I started seeing a very different thinking fella within the first few minutes of your presentation. Simple (that I like) and a experienced shop thinker! Liked your small saw revolving table too. As a retired Industrial Arts and Vocational educator I was impressed!!! I have been worried about the NEW up and coming boys in the trades. But you impressed me. Usually I do not add a comment to a blog demo. You got a star (LOL) today from me! Mr G. Hillsborough County Schools retd. (retireded)

Thanks Patrick. I've been wanting to get a cyclone system for a while and this video inspired me to build one. I even picked up a bucket and cone today. There's a few things that are slightly different that I want to try and I'm going to film and document my success/failure. I've been toying around with the idea of filming my woodworking misadventures and I think this will be the first. I'll link this video for the one subscriber (my mother) I start off with. Thanks again!

Wow, Patrick! Like several other commenters, there was so much in this video that I loved, like your rotating table saw/chop saw stand, table saw circle jig, aluminum bat hole punch, and of course, the cyclone build itself! Outstanding! The boiling water heat source for the PVC is a great suggestion, 'cause I'd like to see more of your videos and those fumes from torch heating the PVC will shorten your years for sure! Keep up the great work Patrick!

Cool stuff Pat. Great low-buck McGuyver trick! Maybe you could make one addition: a deeper dust chamber. Maybe hobble two 5 gal. buckets together. All that you would do is butt two 5gal buckets, base to base, and screw and glue them together. You'd have to cut out all but a inch or two of the centers, so the dust can fall to the bottom container. Maybe sandwich some plywood or something to increase the rigidity, etc. Then glue the lid to the bottom container (or not?). Voila! You got a 10 gal dust receptacle! Or convert a trashcan into a dust chamber? RubberMaid Brute trash cans are durable, have pretty good lids, and even have the wheeled dolly attachment. But, them Rubbermaid/Brute trash cans aren't cheap. And you'd have to build some sort of internal frame to keep the trash can from collapsing. I think that may be departing from the essence of your video: make it at ultra low cost (dirt cheap!). Whatever volume you need. Just some ideas. Cool video, real simple!

First off i saw your video in september 2020, watched already a couple of other cylone builds, but the use of a street cone is a good alternative for some bigger cylones. The small ones you get cheap everywhere just add a bucket and done. I will keep it in mind for some later projects. Thanks for your time to present this.

nice idea , could use a wheeliebin / trashcan as a collector , it can hold a lot more and you can just wheel it out in the street for collection not trowing it in another can saving you some heavy lifting only thing different would be the lid for the bin , prolly need some foam strip and some sort of clamping to keep it sealing right might even be able to put both cones on it and keep the hoses plugged into the dustmakers

I would assume you would want the interior of the cone to remain as smooth as possible for the vortex airflow. By adding in all those internal screws to each 2x2 (which also did not seem necessary to do at all) you seem to have limited the intended purpose of vortex airflow.
@josephmorgan8370
@josephmorgan8370 5 лет назад
A healthy bead of construction adhesive or other tough glue along the inner edge of 2x2 would work in place of screws.

great job now take one of those cyclones and adapt it to a 30 gallon trash barrel. cut a 2 inch slot vertcal slot that starts a few inches from the bottom and ends almost to the top or to the first lip on the barrel, this will allow you to see how full the barrel is getting without removing the lid. The 30 gallon barrel will not have to be emptied as often as the 5 gallon bucket. ill subscribe to your channel so I'll know when and how you do it, that's if you decide to do it. you have a lot of great ideas, i enjoyed the video. thanks for making it. I'd like to add one more thing, i bought a multi-tool and its the most versatile tool in the shop. i thought of it when you were trimming the end of the cone flush to the plywood. all the best, keep up the good work and have a blast with all your projects.

After all the research I've done, I've picked your basic design as how to make mine. Will basically be a carbon copy, with some mods of course, thats what DIY is all about! My needs are also currently less than yours. But I will connect my lil 2hp shop vac with 2 inch pvc to the top of the cyclone, then the standard 1 1/4 shop vac tube it came with to run out of the cyclone to my tools/whatever. My thinking is the 2 inch from the shop vac will allow maximum airflow but not lots of pressure, then the 1 1/4 (only 1 if you count some of the tool, will have plenty of pressure to suck up dust. And it'll really be moving, so less will get sucked up by the shop vac fitting at the top (high cfm, low pressure 2 inch pipe). I'll let you know how it goes! Also, I have no planar, lathe,, band saw table saw (although making a table I can use my circular saw, router, and jigsaw as fixed vertical tools). So I think this set up will work for now. I also live in an apartment,so thats a real limitation. Only thing I think you missed was the fact that these dust collection systems work great for most debris, but can't really capture sub 5 micron dust, which is by far the worst for your health. So I outfitted my shop vac with a HEPA filter (claims 99.97% at 0.3 micron). IT was pricey, 50 bucks, but will make a huge difference for your health, not just easy cleanup. Thanks for the thorough, detailed video, have a good one eh, Peace Chris

Nice build Patrick, I love that flip top work bench. I use water in my jet boil to heat up my PVC, it makes a nice even heat transfer w/out any discolor of the PVC ( I improvised because I ran out of Map gas)

I have already made a cone cyclone dust collector. It works very good but i have to do some modification, such as a bigger bucket, add some wheels too. What is your opinion about the depth on extraction pipe in the cone?

Hey patrick...you can cut bottom out of one bucket stack on other and glue them togther..you would have 10 gallon narrow container then that dosent hog space..liked your video..im thinking of making one..God bless..Jesus Loves You

Hey Patrick, I might have commented on this before, but I'm really digging this cyclone and with all the work I've been doing lately this is going to be my next project, I've noticed you haven't been making many videos lately and hope you start making videos again, thanks for sharing your cyclone and keep up the great work!

Nice build Patrick. I went with the thien baffle instead as it sits neatly on the big buckets.

that's awesome Irish chippy whatever works best for ya, at the end of the day all I know is I haven't had to clean or open the shop vac or clean a filter in years

Yeah. Except when I forgot to empty the bucket. The problem with big buckets is you do not need to empty them often, and thus you can become complacent :)
