No one cares about a stupid teenage mistake made when the person is in their 40s. It would also only be a misdemeanor. Employers only care about felony convictions.

Petty theft is just that, petty. She probably got convicted of a misdemeanor. In X number of years, she could probably file for an expungement or a sealing of her record. Given the fact that was at least 15 years ago, she could probably go file the paperwork Monday there would probably be a filing fee. If you're unaware, an expungment would remove that charge from her record. Usually crimes not of violence & eligible for less than a few years in prison max are the ones that qualify. But, contact the courts where you live (or rather your neice does) for more accurate information. Every state has a process... What I said isn't legal advice, just wanted to inform you so that possibly she can move on, as if it never happened. Non-violent misdemeanors are 9 times out of 10 pretty low on the "crime severity" totem pole, which is good news, obviously.
