The japanese version had a way better sound track than the american version. I was lucky to grow up with the japanese version when i was a kid in the mid 90s.
I agree. It’s subtle, emotive and spiritual. The American version mocks us of the west, convinced none of us here can appreciate anything related to SF being that deep or organic. The producers chose to infuse a generic metallic taste that completely undoes the delicate and meaningful tone and cinematography. I’m glad to see that the younger generation on the whole doesn’t have to deal with this kind of wanton artistic desecration in more modern anime.
@@hazelgoodshepherd9315 Definitely agree with the overall point, just remember that this was VERY early into the life of anime in the West. A lot of dubs either replaced music or threw in a bunch of profanity (and yet sometimes cut out violence or sex themes, paradoxically enough), because there was this huge push to market anime as "cartoons but badass" for whatever reason, I guess due to the stigma against animation? Either way, I don't fault this case in particular since it was something that was basically mandated for all English releases of anime since the medium was so new to us back then. Thankfully that is no longer the case, now the whole world knows how much we love anime and it's easier than ever to access and enjoy without goofy marketing gimmicks. On the bright side thanks to Discotek it is now very accessible to watch both the original Japanese version AND the dub with the original soundtrack for viewers that prefer English audio. I'll go with the Japanese 9 times out of 10 but I do really like some of the dub performances for what they are.
@@dyrr836 Yes, I’m quite aware of the time period. I’ve been watching dubbed anime in the United States since the last early 80s. This music and other tracks like it chosen for different parts of the movie, seem to completely kill the original spirit of the original directors. But that’s just me. If you guys liked it, that’s really not my business.
This track is a perfect example of how American viewers were essentially robbed of the experience intended by the original creators. The soulless metal gives the impression that the fighters are on equal footing, that this is just another rumble in a video game martial arts cartoon. When in actuality nothing could be further from the truth. This brief interlude was originally followed by a dirge like symphonic reflection, a passionate rendition of the movie’s theme song Spirit, Strength and Homelife, meant to reflect Chun Li’s utter desperation at the hands of a world class assassin who is superior to her in every way. This is a woman completely unprepared and overmatched, literally staring Death right in the face. You simply cannot correctly convey a story so emotionally powerful with a musical device as brash and unwieldy as generic pop metal.
She's certainly unprepared and caught off guard, but how are you going to claim she's overmatched? She hit him with a sofa and then kicked the shit out of him through a wall to his death.
@@spankminister Balrog is a man. He jumps higher, moves faster, is physically stronger. Etcetera, etcetera. He is a trained assassin with years of experience. If you doubt what I’m saying, just re-watch the fight. He spends the first few minutes pummeling her without mercy, a very one-sided affair. Then if that’s not enough, we can easily gauge the difference in skill and figure out that he’s toying with her when she puts everything into a roundhouse kick and he just leans back casually to avoid it then pops right back up just inches from her face to grin at her behind his mask. Yes, Chun li is overmatched. That’s the whole point of the scene. She’s the underdog, the heroine. The only reason she even manages to survive is that she exploits his psychological profile as a malignant narcissist.
Yes, when Chun Li gets out of the shower, it's playing on the radio. It's the only music you can hear until the landline phone is knocked over and Guile realizes she can't pick up because she's in trouble.
I think both the American and Japanese soundtracks are good, I prefer the rock song that played in the fight between Vega and Chun Li, but this song is just as great.

Just saw the Japanese promo for the Super Street Fighter 2 game for Super Famicom!! I don't know why I thought that this was a fake song when I was younger watching the movie. When the elec. guitars and drums kick in, it sounds AWESOME!!!

The American version tries to portray a badass fight taking place. This song in the Japanese version on the other hand is very somber. Something horrible is taking place in front of our eyes and Chun Li's home, the one place she should feel safe in, has been invaded and she is fighting for her life.

For me, this song is an excellent composition. But it seems unfitting for the fight between Chun-Li and Vega (or Balrog as he's called in Japan). I always thought the song Ultra by KMFDM fit the scene better. Don't get me wrong, I love this song. But this sounds more like it would fit a dramatic and heartbreaking scene than a fierce battle.
+MDthornton83 I can definitely understand why you feel that way, but for me it's cool that the bgm is the song that both Chun-li and Guile are listening to on their radio, yet Chun-li's fighting for her life, while Guile is unaware (for a short time) while driving through traffic. I think it really sets an interesting mood that also contrasts with what's going on. I also really like the piece that plays in the last part of the fight, which I think capture's Vega/Balrog's essence, as well as Chun-li's struggle at the same time. As I said, I get why you feel the way you do. I feel they both work in different ways (and I feel that way about the two scores as a whole). Just wanted to toss in another viewpoint. >=^D
+MDthornton83 I humbly disagree. It has a Melancholic feel to it ... I've never seen a fight executed this way and I sorta love it because of the severe contrast between the violence of the fight and gentleness of the song. One of the main reasons I love the japanese version is because of the OST.
I see. And I understand. But I think we can both agree that both versions feature solid soundtracks. But the Japanese version OST is definitely something special.
